Scuba Diving in Pattaya, Thailand
Explore the exotic marine life with Scuba Diving in Pattaya
Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6533 reviews )
Scuba diving in Pattaya is the easiest way to dive in Thailand if you are starting out or short on time. The city sits about two hours from Bangkok and has 25-plus dive sites within a 40-minute boat ride, including three sunken navy ships you can swim through. This is not a world-class reef destination, and we will be honest about that. What it is, is the country’s most accessible wreck-diving hub, warm, calm from November to April, and beginner-friendly, with a try dive from around 3,500 Baht (Rs 9,975) and no experience or swimming skill needed to get in the water.
Scuba Diving in Pattaya: Quick Takeaways
• Dive 25-plus sites within a 40-minute boat ride, roughly 90 minutes from Bangkok, so it works as a day trip.
• Pattaya’s signature dives are three HTMS navy wrecks (Khram, Kood and Mataphon) at about 14 to 30 m, plus the Hardeep wreck.
• First-timers pay from about 3,500 Baht (Rs 9,975) for a Discover Scuba try dive; certified divers pay from about 2,500 Baht (Rs 7,125) for a two-tank fun dive.
• Go November to April for calm seas and the best visibility, around 20 to 30 m in the Nov to Feb peak.
• Beginner-friendly and safe with a good PADI shop, but be honest: for world-class reefs, Koh Tao and the Similans beat Pattaya.
Is Scuba Diving in Pattaya Worth It?
Yes, for the right diver. Pattaya is where most people in Thailand do their first-ever dive, because it is close to Bangkok, the water is warm and forgiving, and the shops are used to nervous beginners. The draw is not coral. It is metal: three retired Thai navy ships were scuttled off the coast and are now some of the most accessible wreck dives in the country, wrapped in soft coral and full of fish.
Set your expectations honestly. The Gulf water here is greener and busier than the postcard blue of the islands, and visibility on an average day sits nearer 8 to 15 m than the 30 m you get down south. If world-class reef diving is the whole point of your trip, Koh Tao or the Similan Islands off Phuket are the better call. But if you are in Pattaya anyway, want to try diving without committing to a course, or want to swim through a shipwreck a short boat ride from your hotel, it absolutely earns the half-day. Pair it with a Coral Island (Koh Larn) trip or a snorkeling session and you have a full day on the water.
Best Dive Sites and Wrecks in Pattaya
Pattaya’s sites split into two groups: the near islands south of the bay, good for reefs and beginners, and the wrecks further out for anyone with a certification. Most day boats run to the near islands; the deeper wrecks are a full-day or advanced trip.
The near islands (reefs, 6 to 20 m)
Koh Larn, Koh Sak and Koh Krok sit a short hop off Pattaya and hold the shallow coral gardens where try dives and courses happen. Koh Rin, further out, has the healthiest hard and soft coral of the group and the best chance of turtles and reef sharks. Shark Fin Rock, a rocky pinnacle nearby, is a favourite for schooling fish. Depths run from about 6 m in the shallows to 20 m, so they suit everyone from a first-timer to a diver logging easy fun dives.
The wrecks (14 to 30 m)
This is what Pattaya is really known for. Off Samae San to the south lie three scuttled Thai navy ships, the HTMS Khram, HTMS Kood (Kut) and HTMS Mataphon, sitting between roughly 14 and 30 m and now grown over with coral and patrolled by groupers, barracuda and the odd turtle. The Khram is the most popular, upright and open enough for guided penetration by trained divers. The Hardeep (the SS Suddhadib), a WWII-era wreck near Samae San at about 26 m, is the other classic. Because the wrecks are deeper, most shops want you to be at least Open Water certified, and Advanced Open Water for the full penetration dives.
| Dive site | Type | Depth | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Koh Larn / Koh Sak / Koh Krok | Reef | 6 to 18 m | Try dives, courses, beginners |
| Koh Rin | Reef | 10 to 20 m | Best coral, turtles, reef sharks |
| Shark Fin Rock | Pinnacle | 10 to 18 m | Schooling fish, fun dives |
| HTMS Khram / Kood / Mataphon | Wreck | 14 to 30 m | Certified divers, wreck penetration |
| Hardeep (SS Suddhadib) | Wreck | ~26 m | Advanced divers, marine life |
Scuba Diving Options and Who They Are For
There are three ways to get in the water in Pattaya, and which one you pick depends entirely on whether you are certified.
Discover Scuba Diving, sometimes called a try dive, is for people with no certification and no experience. An instructor gives you a briefing in shallow water, then takes you down to about 6 to 12 m holding your gear the whole way. You do not need to swim well and there is no exam. It is the single most-booked option in Pattaya and the reason so many divers have their first breath underwater here.
A Fun Dive is for certified divers. You book a two-tank boat trip, show your card, and dive the reefs or wrecks with a guide but without an instructor holding your hand. This is the cheapest way to dive per tank once you are qualified.
The PADI Open Water course is the full three-to-four-day certification that lets you dive anywhere in the world afterwards. Pattaya is a popular and affordable place to earn it because the shallow island reefs are ideal training water. If you already hold Open Water, you can also do your Advanced Open Water here, which you will want for the deeper wreck penetration dives.
Scuba Diving in Pattaya Prices
Prices depend on which of the three options you choose and whether gear and hotel transfer are included. Below are typical 2026 rates in both Baht and Rupees, because no rival page prices these dives in Rupees and that is the number an Indian traveller actually wants.
| Option | Who it is for | Cost (Baht) | Cost (Rupees, approx) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discover Scuba (try dive, no cert) | First-timers | 3,500 to 4,500 B | Rs 9,975 to 12,825 |
| Fun Dive (2 tanks, boat) | Certified divers | 2,500 to 3,200 B | Rs 7,125 to 9,120 |
| PADI Open Water course (3 to 4 days) | New certification | 9,000 to 14,000 B | Rs 25,650 to 39,900 |
Rupee figures use 1 Baht to about 2.85 Rupees (August 2026) and are a guide only. Most rates include tanks, weights and a guide; confirm whether full gear rental and hotel pickup are bundled or added on, and expect wreck and full-day trips to sit at the top of each range. For the operator-by-operator price breakdown, the entry-fees tab goes deeper.
See the scuba diving entry fees tab for the full fare list.
Best Time to Dive in Pattaya
Dive Pattaya between November and April, the dry season, when the Gulf of Thailand stays calm, boats run every day and visibility is at its best, roughly 20 to 30 m in the November to February peak. Water sits warm all year at about 27 to 30 C, so a shorty wetsuit is plenty and many divers skip it. The green season from June to October still dives fine on calm days, but short afternoon storms stir up the water and drop visibility toward 8 to 15 m, so book a morning boat and keep a spare day in case the sea is up. Whatever the month, the first boat of the day usually gets the flattest water and the clearest view.
Safety, Marine Life and What to Expect Underwater
Scuba diving in Pattaya is beginner-safe when you book a proper PADI shop, and that qualifier matters more than the activity itself. Standards vary between operators, so choose one that is PADI or SSI affiliated, checks your gear in front of you, keeps small groups per guide and does not rush the briefing. On a try dive an instructor stays within arm’s reach the whole time, you breathe through a regulator the shops maintain, and you never go deeper than your training allows. You do not need to swim well for a shallow reef dive, though basic water comfort helps.
Underwater you can expect soft and hard coral on the reefs, clouds of tropical fish, nudibranchs, moray eels, stingrays and, on the better sites like Koh Rin, sea turtles and small blacktip reef sharks that are harmless to divers. The wrecks pull in bigger schools, groupers and barracuda sheltering in the hull. It is not the technicolour reef of the Andaman coast, but there is plenty of life, and swimming through a coral-covered navy ship is a genuine thrill you will not forget. If you have a heart or lung condition, a recent surgery, or you are pregnant, sit this one out and ask a doctor first.

Pattaya Travel FAQs
Is scuba diving in Pattaya worth it?
Yes, if you are a beginner, short on time, or want to dive a shipwreck close to Bangkok. Pattaya is Thailand's most accessible wreck-diving hub, with three navy wrecks and 25-plus sites about two hours from the capital. It is not the place for world-class reefs, those are Koh Tao and the Similans, but for a first dive or an easy wreck dive on a Pattaya trip, it is well worth the half-day.
How much does scuba diving in Pattaya cost?
A Discover Scuba try dive for first-timers runs about 3,500 to 4,500 Baht (Rs 9,975 to 12,825). A two-tank fun dive for certified divers is about 2,500 to 3,200 Baht (Rs 7,125 to 9,120), and a full PADI Open Water course is about 9,000 to 14,000 Baht (Rs 25,650 to 39,900). Most rates include tanks, weights and a guide; check whether full gear rental and hotel transfer are bundled.
What is the best time to dive in Pattaya?
November to April, the dry season, is best. The sea is calm, boats run daily, and visibility is at its peak at around 20 to 30 m from November to February. Water stays warm at about 27 to 30 C all year. The June to October green season still dives on calm days, but afternoon storms cut visibility, so book a morning boat and keep a spare day.
Is scuba diving in Pattaya safe, and can beginners do it?
It is beginner-safe when you book a reputable PADI or SSI shop. On a Discover Scuba dive an instructor stays with you the whole time, the shallow reef sites are only 8 to 15 m deep, and the shops train and brief you before you get in. Wreck dives are deeper (14 to 30 m) and need a certification. Standards vary between operators, so pick one with good gear and small groups.
Do I need to know swimming for scuba diving in Pattaya?
You do not need to be a strong swimmer for a shallow reef try dive. Instructors take complete beginners who cannot swim well, staying within arm's reach and controlling your depth. Basic comfort in water helps you relax and enjoy it more. For the full Open Water certification you do need to pass a short swim and float test, which the course covers.
Can you dive the shipwrecks in Pattaya, and where are they?
Yes. The three HTMS navy wrecks (Khram, Kood and Mataphon) and the Hardeep wreck lie off Samae San, south of Pattaya, at about 14 to 30 m. The Khram is the most popular and sits upright, so certified divers can explore the outside of the hull; full penetration needs Advanced Open Water. Most shops run wreck trips as a full or advanced day out rather than a beginner dive.
How deep are the dive sites in Pattaya, and what will I see?
The coral reef sites off Koh Larn, Koh Sak and Koh Rin are shallow, about 6 to 20 m, while the shipwrecks are deeper at roughly 14 to 30 m. Expect soft and hard coral, tropical fish, nudibranchs, moray eels and stingrays, plus sea turtles and harmless blacktip reef sharks on the better reefs. The wrecks draw bigger schools of fish, groupers and barracuda.
Is there an age limit for scuba diving in Pattaya?
There is no upper age limit as long as you are in good health, and many people dive well into their seventies. Discover Scuba dives usually start from age 10, and the junior Open Water course from 10 to 15 with depth limits. Anyone with a heart or lung condition, a recent surgery, or a pregnancy should get a doctor's clearance first and tell the dive shop.
