From the Indira Gandhi Airport take a flight till Chandigarh which take about an hour and 20 minutes. From here, you can now travel by cab or taxi till Shimla which takes about 1 hour and 43 minutes.
Pune To Himachal Pradesh By Rail
The journey by train from Pune till Himachal is quite a long one and takes about 33 hours. There are no direct trains from Pune till Himachal and you will have to travel by train from the Pune Junction till Chandigarh. From here, take a train to Kalka or Shimla which takes about half an hour to an hour. You can also travel by car or taxi from Chandigarh to Kalka or Shimla.

What is the nearest airport to Himachal Pradesh?
For most travellers the practical answer is Chandigarh Airport (IXC), the nearest large airport with reliable daily flights from across India; Shimla is about 113 km away and Manali about 305 km. Himachal also has three small in-state airports at Bhuntar / Kullu-Manali (KUU), Gaggal / Kangra (DHM) and Jubbarhatti / Shimla (SLV), but they run only a few small flights, mostly from Delhi and Chandigarh, and are prone to weather cancellations.
How do you reach Himachal Pradesh from Delhi?
You have three choices. By road, Shimla is about 343 km (7 to 8 hours), while Manali is 530 to 570 km and takes 12 to 14 hours, so it is not the flat 7-hour trip often quoted. By bus, overnight HRTC and Volvo coaches leave nightly from Kashmere Gate ISBT, Majnu Ka Teela and Anand Vihar. By train, take a service to Kalka and switch to the Kalka-Shimla toy train, or reach Chandigarh and drive on.
What is the fastest way to reach Himachal Pradesh?
Flying is fastest. A flight into Chandigarh or Delhi takes 1.5 to 2 hours from most Indian metros, and from there Shimla is a 3.5-hour drive. If you can get a seat on one of the limited flights into Bhuntar, Gaggal or Shimla, you skip most of the road time, though those small airports cancel often in bad weather, so keep the Chandigarh option as a backup.
Can you reach Himachal Pradesh directly by train?
Not into the main hill towns. No broad-gauge railway climbs into the Himachal interior, so trains take you as far as the railheads at Chandigarh, Kalka, Pathankot or Amb Andaura (Una), and you continue by road. The exceptions are two narrow-gauge heritage lines: the Kalka-Shimla toy train up to Shimla, and the Kangra Valley Railway from Pathankot toward Jogindernagar.
Can I travel to Himachal Pradesh by bus?
Yes, and it is the cheapest way. HRTC (the Himachal state transport service) and private operators run frequent Volvo and ordinary coaches from Delhi, Chandigarh and other north-Indian cities to Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala and beyond. Overnight buses from Delhi's Kashmere Gate ISBT cost roughly Rs 700 to Rs 1,800 depending on the coach, and get you to the hills by morning.
How do I reach Himachal Pradesh from Kerala or South India?
There is no direct route, so fly first. The simplest plan is a flight from Kochi, Bengaluru or Chennai to Delhi or Chandigarh (about 3 to 3.5 hours), then a bus, cab or the Kalka-Shimla toy train into the hills. If you prefer the train for part of the way, reach Delhi and pick up a service to Kalka or Chandigarh, then drive the final leg.
Is the Kalka-Shimla toy train worth it?
For the scenery, yes. The Kalka-Shimla line is a UNESCO World Heritage railway that covers 96 km through 102 tunnels and over 864 bridges, taking about 5 hours to climb to Shimla. It is slower than the road, so treat it as an experience rather than a shortcut. Book the Shivalik Deluxe Express or Himalayan Queen and reserve heritage coaches ahead in peak season, as they fill quickly.
Which is cheaper, the train and bus via Chandigarh or a flight?
The surface route is almost always cheaper. A train to Chandigarh or Kalka plus an onward Volvo or ordinary bus typically comes to a fraction of a hill-airport fare, and the toy train itself is inexpensive at roughly Rs 300 to Rs 800 for standard classes. Flights save time but cost more and, into the small in-state airports, can be both pricey and unreliable in poor weather.
How far is Shimla or Manali from Chandigarh airport?
Shimla is about 113 km from Chandigarh, a drive of roughly 3.5 hours on NH-5. Manali is around 305 km via NH-3 through Bilaspur and Mandi, which takes 8 to 9 hours.
