Why Kashmir Works So Well for a Honeymoon

Few trips in India fit as much into one week as a honeymoon in Kashmir. You can wake up on a houseboat in Srinagar, ride a cable car into the snow at Gulmarg the next day and eat lunch beside the Lidder River in Pahalgam the day after. None of those places is more than about 100 km from Srinagar airport.

What sets it apart from other Indian hill honeymoons is the houseboat, and it's usually the most romantic night of the trip. Nowhere else in the country can you sleep on a carved cedar boat, wake to a shikara selling flowers at your window and drink Kahwa on the deck before breakfast. The flight from Delhi takes about an hour and a half, so you lose half a day to travel rather than a full one. The seasons also change the trip completely. The same Gulmarg meadow is green and full of ponies in June and a ski slope in January.

Choose Kashmir if you want variety (lakes, gardens, snow and meadows in one week) and can fly. Choose Manali if you want a shorter road trip and a lower bill.

Best Time for a Honeymoon in Kashmir: Month by Month

The best time for a honeymoon in Kashmir is April to May for flowers and pleasant days, and late September to November for autumn colour and smaller crowds. Pick late December to February only if snow is the point of the trip, because days are short and the cold is serious. Here is how each month feels for a couple.

Couples who want both tulips and snow, the most romantic combination Kashmir offers, should go in the first two weeks of April. The garden is still in bloom in Srinagar and the Gondola's second phase usually still has snow at the top. How Many Days Do You Need for a Kashmir Honeymoon?

Plan 5 nights for a first honeymoon in Kashmir. Four nights covers Srinagar and Gulmarg properly, but Pahalgam then becomes a rushed day trip of five or six hours on the road. Five nights adds Pahalgam with an overnight by the Lidder River. Six or seven nights gives you a slow day in Srinagar, a Sonamarg day trip or a meadow like Yusmarg or Doodhpathri. With ten days you can add 2 nights in the Gurez Valley.

Kashmir Honeymoon Itineraries: 4, 5 and 6 Nights

All three plans start and end in Srinagar because that's where the flights land. Gulmarg is about 50 km from Srinagar (1.5 to 2 hours) and Pahalgam about 95 km (2.5 to 3 hours). Moving between Gulmarg and Pahalgam means passing back through Srinagar, so order the nights to avoid back-tracking.

5 Nights: The Classic Kashmir Honeymoon Route

This is the trip most couples take. Zain, who booked his honeymoon through TravelTriangle, followed almost exactly this route over 5N/6D. He stayed on Nigeen Lake, then in a heritage hotel in Gulmarg and a hotel "right opposite to the Lidder River" in Pahalgam. Two Variations Couples Ask Us For

The snow honeymoon (late December to February). Do 2 nights in Srinagar and 2 or 3 in Gulmarg, and drop Pahalgam. Gulmarg becomes the whole trip in winter, with Gondola rides, ski lessons for beginners and sledging. The offbeat honeymoon (May to October). Keep 2 Srinagar nights, take a day to Yusmarg (47 km) or Doodhpathri (42 km), and add 2 nights in the Gurez Valley if your dates fall between early summer and October. Gurez is about 125 km from Srinagar over Razdan Pass, a five to six hour drive. The pass closes in winter, and you'll show photo ID at army checkposts on the way.

Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam are the three bases almost every Kashmir honeymoon uses. The other five on this list are for couples with an extra day or two who want somewhere quieter.

12 Romantic Things to Do in Kashmir

• Take a shikara out at sunset. The official rate is about Rs 700 to Rs 800 for the whole boat for an hour, for up to four people, so you can have it to yourselves. Ask for the route past Char Chinar. More on the shikara ride in Srinagar.

• See the floating vegetable market at dawn. Farmers trade from boats on Dal Lake before 7 am. Your houseboat owner can arrange a shikara for 5:30 am.

• Sleep in a houseboat suite. A deluxe room starts around Rs 4,000 a night. Taking a whole deluxe boat to yourselves costs about Rs 7,000, and premium boats start at Rs 12,000.

• Have dinner on the houseboat deck. Most honeymoon packages include a candlelight dinner. Ask for it on the deck, not the dining room, and confirm the night with your agent.

• Ride the Gulmarg Gondola to the top. Phase 1 runs to Kongdoori and Phase 2 climbs to near Apharwat peak. Tickets cost about Rs 810 and Rs 1,010 per person and are sold online only, with Phase 2 often booked out weeks ahead in peak season. The Gondola also shuts for a few days each year for safety maintenance (14 to 17 September in 2026), so check the official portal before you fix your Gulmarg day. See our Gulmarg Gondola guide.

• Go sledging in Gulmarg. Wooden sledges are pulled up by locals from December to March. Agree on the price before you sit down.

• Walk to Khilanmarg. The 6 km trail from Gulmarg climbs to a meadow with views of Nanga Parbat on a clear day. Ponies are available if one of you would rather ride.

• Watch the sun go down from Pari Mahal. This seven-terrace garden sits above Chashme Shahi, and the view down over Dal Lake is best in the last hour before it closes.

• Picnic in Betaab Valley. The valley is 7 to 8 km from Pahalgam and costs Rs 100 per adult to enter. Pack lunch, as there's little food inside, and plan to leave by 4 pm.

• See the Tulip Garden in bloom. The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, one of Asia's largest, is open for about a month from mid-March. Go at opening time on a weekday.

• Dress up in pheran for a couple photoshoot. Photographers at Nishat Bagh and on the Boulevard rent Kashmiri outfits and jewellery by the session.

Where to Stay: Houseboat, Hotel or Resort?

Book at least one houseboat night, because that's the romantic experience you came for. Then use hotels and resorts in Gulmarg and Pahalgam, where there are no houseboats.

Kashmir Honeymoon Cost per Couple

A 5N/6D Kashmir honeymoon costs from about Rs 40,000 per couple on a budget, Rs 60,000 to Rs 90,000 mid-range and Rs 1.5 lakh or more for luxury, without flights. The budget figure matches what couples actually pay. Add-ons most couples pay on top

Three things push the bill up. The first is season (late May, June and the Christmas week cost the most). The second is how you get around, since a private cab for every day costs far more than a shared one. The third is how late you book flights. The cheapest months are November and early March.

How to Reach Kashmir for Your Honeymoon

Fly into Srinagar International Airport (SXR). Non-stop flights from Delhi take about 1.5 hours and from Mumbai about 2 hours 40 minutes. Couples from Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune and most other cities usually connect via Delhi or Mumbai.

Is Kashmir Safe for a Honeymoon in 2026?

Yes, for the main honeymoon circuit. Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and the reopened parts of Pahalgam are busy with tourists again in 2026, as long as you check the official advisory before you go and know which spots are closed. After the April 2025 attack on tourists at Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, security was tightened and several sites closed. Most reopened in stages. Betaab Valley reopened in June 2025, Aru Valley in September 2025, and Doodhpathri and Yusmarg in February 2026. Check the gate board at Betaab for the day's closing time. As of October 2026, Baisaran and Chandanwari remain closed to tourists. Check the latest updates on the J&K Tourism website before you travel.

The practical rules that catch couples out:

• Phones. Prepaid SIMs issued outside Jammu and Kashmir don't work here. Postpaid connections from Jio, Airtel and BSNL do. If you're both on prepaid, buy a local prepaid SIM in Srinagar with your ID.

• Taxis. Inside Pahalgam, sightseeing to Betaab and Aru is by local union taxi only, at fixed rates from the stand. Sonamarg has a similar union-taxi rule for local sightseeing.

• Cash. ATMs in Gulmarg and Pahalgam can run out of cash on busy weekends. Carry enough cash for ponies, sledges and tips.

• Roads. Leave a buffer day before your flight between November and March, when snow can close roads for a day.

• Shrines and the old city. Cover shoulders and knees at Hazratbal and the Shankaracharya Temple. Phones and cameras are not allowed at the top of Shankaracharya, so leave them in the car.

• Ramadan. Restaurants in the old city may open only after sunset during Ramadan. Hotels and houseboats serve meals as usual.

Real Kashmir Honeymoon Stories

Zain and his wife picked Kashmir after both had "been hearing about its glory".
