Srinagar Honeymoon Guide: Romantic Places, Houseboats and Itinerary

A Srinagar honeymoon works best over 3 nights: one on a houseboat on Dal or Nigeen Lake, two in a lakeside hotel, and a day trip to Gulmarg or Sonamarg in the middle. Go from mid-March to April for tulips and almond blossom, May and June for warm evenings on the water, October and November for golden chinars, or late December to February if you want snow. Budget about Rs 30,000 to Rs 70,000 per couple for 3 nights before flights, and fly straight into Srinagar (SXR).

15 Romantic Things to Do on a Srinagar Honeymoon

Every experience below is within about 12 km of Dal Gate except the Gulmarg day trip. Costs are for two people unless the row says per person.

On the Water: Shikara, Floating Market and a Houseboat Night

Dal is the second largest lake in Jammu and Kashmir after Wular, and on a honeymoon it is less a sight than a setting. You'll cross it, sleep on it and eat breakfast beside it. Our Dal Lake guide covers its history and ghats in full.

Sunset Shikara Ride

A shikara is a long, flat wooden boat with cushions, a canopy and a boatman paddling from the back. The Tourism Department has notified the rate at Rs 700 per boat for the first hour and Rs 400 for each extra hour (rate notice report). That is per boat, not per person, so you get it to yourselves. Start at about 5 pm in summer (4 pm in winter) from a Boulevard ghat and ask the boatman for the loop past Char Chinari and Nehru Park. The sun drops behind the city and the Zabarwan ridge goes orange. Floating vendors will paddle up with saffron, papier-mâché and kahwa. A polite "no, thank you" works, and a cup of kahwa on the water is worth saying yes to.

Floating Vegetable Market at Dawn

Before 7 am, farmers from the floating gardens of inner Dal trade lotus stems, turnips and greens from their boats. It is over by the time most visitors wake up. Ask your houseboat owner to book a shikara for 5:30 am, take a blanket because the lake is cold at that hour even in May, and you'll be back for breakfast on deck by 8. It is one of the few moments in Srinagar with no crowds at all.

A Houseboat Night: Dal or Nigeen?

Srinagar has several hundred licensed houseboats moored on Dal, Nigeen and the Jhelum. For a memorable honeymoon in Srinagar, spend at least one night on one. The choice that matters most is which lake. Dal is lively, with shikaras passing all evening and the Boulevard a short boat ride away. Nigeen, about 6.5 km north of Dal Gate, is smaller and much quieter, with willows on the banks and very little traffic after dark. Most couples who want privacy pick Nigeen.

Houseboats are graded by the Tourism Department, from deluxe down. A deluxe room starts at about Rs 4,000 a night, a whole deluxe boat at about Rs 7,000, and premium boats from about Rs 12,000. Char Chinari Island

Rup Lank, better known as Char Chinari, is a tiny island in Dal with a chinar tree at each corner. Most shikara loops stop there for ten minutes. In late October and early November the four trees turn copper and red, and the light around 4 pm makes it the best couple photo spot on the lake.

Mughal Gardens and Sunset Points for Couples

Srinagar's Mughal gardens follow the Persian plan of terraces and running water, with the Zabarwan mountains rising straight behind them. Counting Pari Mahal, four of them sit along a 12 km stretch of Dal's eastern shore, so you can see all of them in one unhurried day. Our Mughal Gardens guide has the history of each.

Nishat Bagh

Nishat, the "Garden of Bliss", was laid out in 1633 by Asif Khan, Nur Jahan's brother. It has 12 terraces climbing from the lake edge to the hills and a water channel running down the middle. Arrive at 9 am, walk to the top terrace and look back across Dal. By 11 the tour buses arrive and the photos get harder.

Shalimar Bagh

Jahangir built Shalimar Bagh for Nur Jahan, and the name is usually translated as "Abode of Love", which makes it the garden couples ask about most. It sits at the north end of Dal, about 12 km from Dal Gate, so pair it with Nishat on the same morning. See the full Shalimar Bagh guide.

Chashme Shahi

The smallest of the Mughal gardens was built in 1632 around a natural spring. Locals still fill bottles from it, and the water is cold even in July. It takes about 30 minutes to see, which makes it the natural stop before Pari Mahal on the road above.

Pari Mahal at Sunset

Pari Mahal, the "Palace of Fairies", was built by Dara Shikoh in the 1650s as a school of astrology for his teacher. Its arched terraces look straight down the length of Dal, and this is the best sunset view in Srinagar. The catch is that the gates usually close before the sun actually sets, so get there by 4 pm, take the terraces slowly and be in position for the golden hour. More in our Pari Mahal guide.

Tulip Garden

The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden covers about 30 hectares of the Zabarwan foothills above Dal and is the largest tulip garden in Asia. It opened in 2007 to stretch the tourist season into spring, and the tulips are planted by colour on terraces that look down to the lake. It is open only for about a month each spring. In 2026 it opened on 16 March (opening notice report) and the bloom was largely over by mid-April. The 2027 date is usually announced in February. Go on a weekday at opening time, before the crowds. Badamwari Almond Blossom

Before the tulips, there are almonds. Badamwari, the almond orchard at the foot of Hari Parbat fort, flowers pink and white in early to mid-March, when the rest of the city is still bare. Few tour itineraries include it, so it is often just you, a few local families and the fort walls above. If your honeymoon falls in March, go here first.

Shankaracharya Temple and Hazratbal

The Shankaracharya Temple sits on a hill about 300 m above the Boulevard and gives the widest view over Dal and the city. Go in the morning, when the air is clearest. Phones and cameras are usually left in the car or deposited at security before the climb up the steps. Across the lake, the white marble Hazratbal shrine on the west bank is calm and beautiful at evening prayer. Dress modestly at both, and women should cover their heads at Hazratbal.

Slow Couple Moments in Srinagar

The best part of a Srinagar honeymoon is often the time between the sights. Most of these need no booking at all.

• Walk the Boulevard at dusk. The road along Dal's east shore fills with families after 6 pm. Buy roasted corn from a cart, sit on the stone wall and watch the houseboat lights come on.

• Have a Wazwan dinner. Wazwan is Kashmir's ceremonial feast. Order rista (meatballs in red gravy), gushtaba (meatballs in yoghurt) and rogan josh to share, and finish with kahwa, green tea with saffron, cardamom and almonds. Ahdoos and Mughal Darbar on Residency Road are the classic places, and dinner for two costs about Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000. • Ask for a candlelight dinner on the houseboat deck. Most houseboats will set one up if you ask in the afternoon.

• Dress up in pheran. Photographers at the Dal ghats and the Mughal gardens rent traditional Kashmiri pheran and jewellery for a couple photoshoot. It costs a few hundred rupees per outfit. Agree the price before you dress up.

• Shop for each other. Visit Polo View and Lal Chowk and pick something for each other, such as a pashmina shawl, a papier-mâché box or a walnut-wood jewellery case. Ask for a Geographical Indication label on pashmina. Our Srinagar shopping guide lists the markets.

• Look for the hangul in Dachigam. Dachigam National Park, about 18 km from Dal Gate, is home to the hangul, Kashmir's red deer. Entry needs prior online permission from the Wildlife Department. The park shuts on Tuesdays and usually closes to visitors for a few weeks during the autumn rut, so check before you go.

Day Trips from Srinagar for Couples

Srinagar makes the best base for a short Kashmir honeymoon because every famous valley is a single drive away. You come back to the same houseboat or hotel every night.

Sonamarg, the "Meadow of Gold", is a separate valley in Ganderbal district, a high meadow on the Sindh with glaciers and waterfalls close to the road. The Z-Morh tunnel (open since January 2025) keeps it reachable in winter too. In Pahalgam, Baisaran and Chandanwari are still closed to tourists, so plan the day around Betaab Valley and Aru, and check the status before you go. Book Gulmarg Gondola tickets on the official JKCCC portal as soon as your dates are fixed, because counters at the base do not sell them. Best Time for a Srinagar Honeymoon

The best time for a Srinagar honeymoon is April for flowers. For value, go in September or November, when the gardens are quiet and houseboat rates are at their lowest. Each season gives a different trip, so choose by what you want to see.

Snow in Srinagar city is never guaranteed. It is most likely from late December to January, while Gulmarg has snow almost every year from December to March. Couples who want tulips and snow on the same trip should aim for the first two weeks of April, when the garden is in bloom and Gondola Phase 2 usually still has snow at the top. How Many Days? 2, 3 and 4 Night Srinagar Honeymoon Itineraries

2 nights: do Days 1 and 2, then fly out on Day 3. Split your stay. One night on a houseboat gives you the experience, and two nights in a hotel give you a hot shower, a bigger bed and an easy exit for the day trip. Couples who book three houseboat nights in winter often wish they hadn't.

How to Reach Srinagar

Fly into Srinagar International Airport (SXR), which has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and other major cities. The Delhi flight takes about an hour and a half. By rail, the Vande Bharat Express has run from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar since April 2026, covering 269 km in about 4 hours 50 minutes through the Pir Panjal, a scenic option if you have time. Couple Safety, Etiquette and What to Pack

• Safety. The tourist areas couples use (Dal, the Boulevard, the Mughal gardens, Gulmarg) are busy and heavily policed, and security was tightened across the valley after the April 2025 attack at Baisaran near Pahalgam, which is still closed to tourists. Check the latest J&K travel advisory before you go, and book registered houseboats and taxis, through your hotel or JKTDC if in doubt.

• ID at check-in. Carry a government photo ID for both of you. Every hotel and houseboat registers guests. A marriage certificate is not required by law, but a few properties ask for one from couples, so check the policy when you book.

• Etiquette. Kashmir is conservative. Keep public affection modest, dress modestly at shrines and in the Old City, and women should cover their heads at Hazratbal and Jamia Masjid.

• Agree prices first. Settle shikara, pony and photo rates before you start. The shikara rate of Rs 700 per boat for the first hour is the notified rate.

• Phones. Prepaid SIMs from other states do not work in J&K, but postpaid connections do. Keep some cash, because UPI can fail at ghats and pony stands.

• Pack by season. A light woollen layer even on summer evenings, a down jacket, thermals and waterproof boots from December to February, and comfortable shoes for the Pari Mahal steps and the garden terraces.

Add a Little Adventure

If one of you wants an adrenaline day, Srinagar can do that too. Ride the Gulmarg Gondola to Apharwat, take a tandem paragliding flight above Harwan from May to November, or raft the Sindh at Sonamarg from April to September.
