Your Vietnam Solo Trip at a Glance
Why Vietnam Is an Easy First Solo Trip from India
Vietnam is one of the easiest first solo trips abroad for Indian travellers. Non-stop flights from Delhi and Mumbai reach Hanoi in about 5 hours, the e-visa is applied for online, and the north-to-south route is so well worn that you keep running into the same backpackers from city to city.Every hotel we pick for solo travellers is in a walkable centre: Hanoi's Old Quarter, Hoi An's Ancient Town, District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City. A local Vietnam agent quotes your trip, and you can swap cities, add a Sapa trek or switch to a shared cruise cabin before you pay. Want the full range for couples and families too? See all our Vietnam tour packages. Otherwise jump to the solo cost breakdown or the 5, 7 and 10-day routes.

Vietnam Solo Trip Cost from India (2026)
A 7-day Vietnam solo trip from India costs about Rs 45,000 to Rs 70,000 per person on a backpacker budget and Rs 85,000 to Rs 1,30,000 mid-range, with return flights and the e-visa included. The single biggest variable is the room. A dorm bed in Hanoi's Old Quarter costs US$5 to US$13 a night, while a private single room in a 3-star hotel runs US$30 to US$50.
| Cost per person, 7 days | Backpacker solo (dorms, street food) | Mid-range solo (3-star single room) |
|---|---|---|
| Return flights India to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City | Rs 22,000 to Rs 40,000 | Rs 25,000 to Rs 40,000 |
| Vietnam e-visa, single entry | US$25 (about Rs 2,300) | US$25 (about Rs 2,300) |
| Stay, 6 to 7 nights | Dorm US$5 to US$13 a night: Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,500 | Single room US$30 to US$50 a night: Rs 17,000 to Rs 32,000 |
| Food | US$8 to US$12 a day: Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000 | US$15 to US$25 a day: Rs 10,000 to Rs 16,000 |
| Ha Long Bay | Day trip US$40 to US$60: Rs 3,700 to Rs 5,500 | Overnight cruise US$145 to US$200 sharing, more for a cabin alone |
| Local transport (Grab, sleeper bus, one domestic flight) | Rs 4,000 to Rs 7,000 | Rs 8,000 to Rs 14,000 |
| Travel insurance | Rs 500 to Rs 1,200 | Rs 500 to Rs 1,200 |
| Total | Rs 45,000 to Rs 70,000 | Rs 85,000 to Rs 1,30,000 |
| TravelTriangle solo package, 7N/8D | Land from Rs 38,640 twin share, plus Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 single-room supplement, plus flights |
That last row is where a package earns its keep for one person. Our 7N/8D Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Sapa trip lands at roughly Rs 49,000 to Rs 59,000 on the ground with a single room, the cruise, every transfer and a guide on sightseeing days. Add flights and the visa and you sit near the bottom of the mid-range band, without booking 12 separate pieces yourself.
Travelling solo costs roughly 15 to 25% more per head than travelling as a couple, almost all of it the room. Two ways to cut it: book a shared cabin on the Ha Long cruise, or mix nights. A common mix is a single room in Hanoi and Hoi An and a hostel private room in Ho Chi Minh City. Watching every rupee? Our budget Vietnam tour packages start lower and share rooms by default.
Top Places To Visit For Your Solo Trip To Vietnam
Vietnam runs 1,650 km from the Chinese border to the Mekong Delta, so most solo trips pick a lane: the north, the centre, the south, or the whole thing top to bottom.
• Hanoi and Ninh Binh. The Old Quarter is where most solo trips start: cheap pho at plastic stools, the weekend night market and Train Street, where trains pass a metre from café tables. Two hours south, Ninh Binh is the best day out for one person. You cycle through the rice fields around Tam Coc, then board a sampan at the Trang An pier, where a rower takes you through the limestone caves.
• Ha Long Bay. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage site in 1994 for its scenery and extended the listing in 2000 for its geology: around 1,600 limestone islands and islets, many hollowed out by caves. Solo travellers who want fewer boats pick the Lan Ha Bay side, off Cat Ba Island, where most overnight cruises stop for a kayaking session.
• Sapa. This is where solo trekkers head. You trek between Hmong and Dao villages through rice terraces with a local guide, and the Fansipan cable car climbs to just below the 3,147-metre summit of Indochina's highest peak in about 20 minutes, and a short funicular or about 600 stone steps take you the rest of the way. In the early morning the whole valley sits under mist.
• Ha Giang Loop. A 3 to 4 day motorbike loop of about 350 km along the Chinese border, now the most talked-about solo-backpacker route in the country. Book it with an "Easy Rider" driver and ride pillion. Foreigners need a border-area permit (about 250,000 VND) for Dong Van, Meo Vac and Lung Cu, so confirm your rider arranges it.
• Bac Son Valley. Few foreign tourists make it here, which is the point. It works as a one-night detour from Hanoi when you want rice fields with no tour buses.
• Hoi An and Da Nang. Hoi An's Ancient Town fills with silk lanterns after dark, and it is the easiest place in Vietnam to sign up for a cooking class or a dawn cycling tour with other travellers. Half an hour away, Da Nang has Ba Na Hills with the Golden Bridge held up by giant stone hands, and the Marble Mountains.
• Ho Chi Minh City. The south's big, loud city. Do the War Remnants Museum and Ben Thanh Market by day, a day trip to the Cu Chi Tunnels or a Mekong Delta boat, then Bui Vien Street at night, where hostels run pub crawls you can join alone.
For Sapa-only trips with longer treks, see our Sapa tour packages.
Vietnam Solo Trip Itinerary
Five days covers the north. Seven gets you north and centre. Ten lets you go top to bottom without rushing. Each route below matches a package in the grid above, and every one can be reshaped before you book.
5 days: Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay. Book the Amazing Vietnam Tour Package (4N/5D) and ask for the Ninh Binh day.
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 1 | Land in Hanoi, check in to the Old Quarter. Evening street-food walk and the water puppet show by Hoan Kiem Lake |
| 2 | Temple of Literature, Train Street, coffee at a lake-view café. Join a free walking tour |
| 3 | Day trip to Ninh Binh: Trang An boat ride, cycling in Tam Coc, the 500-step climb at Hang Mua |
| 4 | Ha Long Bay cruise with a cave visit and kayaking |
| 5 | Back to Hanoi and fly home |
7 days: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Sapa. The Phenomenal Vietnam Tour Package (7N/8D) adds the mountains: 4 nights in Hanoi with Ha Long, then 3 in Sapa with a village trek and the Fansipan cable car. If you would rather see the centre, our 7-day Vietnam itinerary package takes the classic Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City line.
10 days: north to south. Vietnam Odyssey: Of Rivers And Mountains (9N/10D) runs Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, flies to Hoi An for lantern nights and a cooking class, then finishes in Ho Chi Minh City with the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong. Want flights booked too? The 12 Days Vietnam Tour with Airfare covers the same ground with Da Nang added.
During your Vietnam solo travel, leave space for things you can't book in advance: a hostel family dinner, a motorbike food tour, a morning at a Hanoi café that turns into a day trip with people you met there.
Is Vietnam Safe for Solo Travellers?
Yes. Vietnam is one of the safer countries in Southeast Asia for solo travellers, including Indian women travelling alone. Violent crime against tourists is rare. The problems you are likely to meet are petty ones, and almost all of them are avoidable.
Common scams and how to dodge them
• Bag and phone snatching from passing motorbikes, mostly in Ho Chi Minh City's District 1. Carry a cross-body bag on the side away from the road, and step back from the kerb when you check your map.
• Taxi and cyclo overcharging. Use Grab or Xanh SM, which show the fare upfront, or the airport transfer in your package.
• Motorbike rental "damage" claims. Photograph the bike before you ride. Better still, ride pillion with a licensed driver: an Indian driving licence is not valid for riding in Vietnam, and most travel insurance will not pay motorbike claims without a valid licence.
• Fake bus and cruise agents. Book through your package or the operator directly, not a street kiosk.
Female solo travel in Vietnam. Women travelling alone report Vietnam as relaxed and low-hassle. Stay in the Old Quarter, Hoi An's Ancient Town or District 1, where streets stay busy until late. Most good hostels have female-only dorms. On sleeper buses, ask for a lower berth near the front. On overnight cruises and trains, book an operator with reviews, which every cruise in our packages has. Your TravelTriangle agent shares a local helpline that answers 24 hours a day for the whole trip.
Save these numbers: police 113, fire 114, ambulance 115. The Embassy of India is in Hanoi and the Consulate General of India is in Ho Chi Minh City.
Where to Stay Solo: Single Room, Hostel or Small Group?
This is the decision that shapes a solo trip's cost and how social it feels. Here is how the three options compare.
| Single room in a 3-star hotel | Hostel (dorm or private) | Small-group tour | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost a night | US$30 to US$50 | Dorm US$5 to US$13 · private room US$16 to US$32 | Shared twin, so no single supplement |
| Privacy | Full | Low in a dorm, decent in a private room | Shared room on most departures |
| Meeting people | You join day tours and cafés | Built in: family dinners, pub crawls | Built in, same group all trip |
| Best for | First trip abroad, women travelling alone, light sleepers | Under-30s on a tight budget | Travellers who want company and a fixed plan |
| How we book it | Default on every solo package | On request in Hanoi, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City | Our Vietnam group tour packages |
Solo Traveller Essentials: E-Visa, Flights, SIM, Money and Food
E-visa. Indian passport holders need a visa for Vietnam, and almost everyone uses the official e-visa at evisa.gov.vn. It costs US$25 for a single entry or US$50 for multiple entries, allows stays of up to 90 days, and usually arrives in 3 to 5 working days. Apply 2 weeks ahead in December and January. The full process is in our guide to the Vietnam visa for Indians.
Flights. Non-stop flights reach Hanoi from Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, and Ho Chi Minh City from Delhi and Mumbai, in about 3 to 5.5 hours. Vietnam Airlines and VietJet also fly direct from Bengaluru and Hyderabad. For airport transfers and overland routes see how to reach Vietnam.
Getting around alone
| Leg | Best option | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Hanoi to Ninh Binh | Bus, train or package transfer | about 2 hours |
| Hanoi to Ha Long Bay or Lan Ha Bay | Cruise shuttle on the expressway | 2.5 to 3 hours |
| Hanoi to Sapa | Sleeper bus or limousine van | 5.5 to 6 hours |
| Hanoi to Ha Giang | Sleeper bus | 6 to 7 hours |
| Hanoi to Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City | Domestic flight | 1 hour 20 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes |
| Da Nang to Hoi An | Grab or shuttle | 40 to 45 minutes |
| Hanoi to Hue | Overnight Reunification Express train | 12 to 14 hours |
SIM and apps. Buy a tourist SIM from Viettel, Vinaphone or Mobifone at the airport arrivals hall (they register it against your passport), or set up an eSIM before you fly. Download Grab for rides and food delivery, Google Translate with offline Vietnamese, and Google Maps offline for Hanoi's lanes.
Money. Vietnam runs on the dong (VND). Carry some US dollars to exchange, use ATMs inside banks, and keep small notes for street food and tips. Cards work in hotels and malls, rarely at stalls.
Vegetarian and Indian food. Easier than most Indian travellers expect. Look for "chay" (vegetarian) restaurants, which run Buddhist vegetarian menus in every city. Hanoi, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City all have Indian restaurants, and your agent can mark you vegetarian for the cruise and hotel breakfasts. Carry the phrase "tôi ăn chay" (I eat vegetarian) for street stalls.
Keep it together. Keep your identity details, passport and printed visa together, with a photo of each in your email. Carry essential medicines and the helpline numbers above.
Best Time to Visit Vietnam for a Solo Trip
All the places that suit a Vietnam solo tour don't share one climate. The north is best from October to April, though Hanoi and Sapa get cold in December and January (Sapa can drop near freezing, so pack a jacket). The centre around Hoi An and Da Nang is driest from February to August (avoid September to December, when typhoons can flood Hoi An's Ancient Town), and the south around Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc from December to April. March and April are the one window when the whole country is pleasant at once, which makes them the best months for a north-to-south solo trip. For month-by-month weather by city, see the best time to visit Vietnam.
Vietnam Group Tours For Solo Travellers
If you are unsure about travelling alone, you can choose a group option. Many travellers start with a Vietnam solo trip in mind but prefer to travel with others for the first few days.
You can explore Vietnam group tour packages, where you travel with like-minded people on fixed departures. Because you share a twin room, a group tour also removes the single supplement, which is the main reason a solo Vietnam trip costs more. A middle path works well too: book a solo package and add small-group day tours, like the Ninh Binh cycling day, a Hoi An cooking class or a Ho Chi Minh City street-food night on a scooter, so you have company by day and your own room at night.
