Scuba Diving In Krabi

Scuba Diving in Krabi, Thailand

Be A Part of A Marvelous Underwater Journey

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6534 reviews )

Scuba diving in Krabi puts you over some of the warmest, clearest water in the Andaman Sea, and you do not need a licence to start. A Discover Scuba session lets a total first-timer breathe underwater with an instructor from around Rs 8,550, while certified divers boat out to blue-water sites like Hin Daeng and the King Cruiser Wreck. Water sits at 27 to 30 C most of the year, visibility runs 15 to 30 metres in season, and leopard sharks, turtles and the odd manta ray are all on the menu.

This guide covers the best dive sites by depth and level, what a dive costs in baht and rupees, the difference between Discover Scuba, fun diving and a PADI course, the best months to go, and how a Krabi dive day actually unfolds. Every price is shown in THB and INR so Indian travellers can budget without doing the conversion.

How Much Does Scuba Diving in Krabi Cost?

What you pay depends on one thing first: are you certified or not. Non-certified travellers do a Discover Scuba dive with an instructor. Certified divers book fun dives, usually two tanks on a day boat. If you want your own licence, a PADI course runs three to four days. The figures below are indicative operator ranges for 2026. Confirm the exact rate with your dive shop when you book.

Dive option What it is Price (THB) Approx (INR)
Discover Scuba, Ao Nang local 2 intro dives, no licence, with an instructor 3,000 to 3,500 Rs 8,550 to 9,975
Discover Scuba, Phi Phi day trip Intro dives on a full Phi Phi boat day 4,500 to 5,500 Rs 12,825 to 15,675
Fun dive, 2 tanks (certified), local Local day boat, two dives, gear included 3,000 to 3,500 Rs 8,550 to 9,975
Fun dive day trip, Phi Phi or Bida Day boat, 2 to 3 dives further out 3,800 to 4,900 Rs 10,830 to 13,965
PADI Open Water course 3 to 4 day full certification, dive to 18 m 11,000 to 15,000 Rs 31,350 to 42,750
PADI Advanced course 2 days, 5 dives, opens the deep sites 9,000 to 11,000 Rs 25,650 to 31,350
National park fee (where it applies) Hat Noppharat Thara / Mu Ko Phi Phi, per entry about 400 Rs 1,140
Full gear rental (certified divers) Own rig for the day, no guide 500 to 1,000 Rs 1,425 to 2,850

Read what is bundled before you compare prices. A fair day-trip rate covers tanks, weights, a wetsuit, the boat, a certified guide and usually lunch. The national park fee at Phi Phi-area sites is often charged on top, so keep some cash for it. For a fuller breakdown and any seasonal deals, see the scuba diving entry fees page.

Best Dive Sites in Krabi

Krabi diving is really day-trip diving. Boats run to local Ao Nang reefs for beginners and out to the marquee pinnacles and wrecks for certified divers. Here are the sites worth planning a trip around, with depth, level and what makes each one special.

Dive site Depth Level Why go
King Cruiser Wreck 12 to 30 m Advanced An 85 m car ferry that sank in 1997, now a fish magnet with barracuda, snapper and lionfish swarming the hull
Shark Point (Hin Musang) 5 to 24 m All levels Three coral pinnacles with reliable leopard sharks resting on the sand, seahorses and soft coral
Anemone Reef 5 to 26 m All levels A pinnacle carpeted in red, green and yellow anemones a kilometre from King Cruiser. Lionfish and leopard sharks
Bida Nok and Bida Nai 5 to 30 m All levels Twin limestone islets off Phi Phi with walls, blacktip reef sharks and turtles in the shallows
Koh Ha 5 to 34 m All levels A five-island cluster with the clearest water in the area, a cathedral cavern and rich macro life
Hin Daeng and Hin Muang 10 to 40 m+ Advanced Thailand's premier deep sites. Purple soft-coral walls, and manta rays and whale sharks in season
Koh Rok 5 to 25 m Beginner to intermediate Twin islands with easy reef diving, octopus, moray eels, stingrays and nudibranchs
Loh Samah Bay (Phi Phi) 5 to 20 m Beginner A sheltered bay with a swim-through canyon, turtles and calm, easy conditions

Beginners and Discover Scuba divers usually stay on the shallow, sheltered sites near Ao Nang and the Phi Phi bays. Hin Daeng, Hin Muang and the King Cruiser Wreck are deeper, current-prone sites best kept for certified and advanced divers. If you would rather stay on the surface, the same reefs are superb for snorkelling in Krabi, and the Phi Phi-area sites are covered in our guide to diving around Phi Phi Island.

Discover Scuba vs Fun Diving vs a PADI Course

Three words decide what you book. Get them straight and the price and the plan fall into place.

Discover Scuba Diving is the try-dive for people with no licence and often no experience at all. An instructor runs a short briefing in the shallows, then takes you down to about 12 metres holding the plan for you. This is the answer for non-swimmers and nervous first-timers. You do not need to be a strong swimmer, only comfortable and healthy enough to be in the water, so a little guidance is usually all it takes. Ao Nang is the easiest base for it.

Fun diving is for anyone already certified. You show your card, kit up and dive two or three tanks on a day boat with a guide. Certified divers are the ones who get out to the deeper pinnacles and the wreck, because they can handle the depth and any current. Hin Daeng and Hin Muang are the sites experienced divers fly in for.

A PADI course turns a try-dive into a licence you keep for life. The Open Water course takes three to four days and lets you dive to 18 metres anywhere in the world. To certify you do need to show basic swimming ability, usually a 200 metre swim and a float, which is the one place swimming really counts. The Advanced course adds five more dives and opens the deep sites. Krabi and nearby Ao Nang are full of PADI schools, so it is an easy place to learn.

What You Will See Underwater

Krabi's reefs are not the Great Barrier Reef, but for warm-water diving close to shore they punch well above their size. Depths run from 5 to 25 metres on most reefs, the water holds 27 to 30 C, and currents are usually gentle, which is exactly why the area suits learners. On a typical few dives you can expect leopard sharks resting on the sand at Shark Point, green and hawksbill turtles grazing the coral, blacktip reef sharks in the Phi Phi shallows, and a supporting cast of moray eels, lionfish, seahorses, octopus, stingrays and clouds of snapper and barracuda. Photographers go for the small stuff too, from nudibranchs to ghost pipefish.

The headline act is at the deep sites. Between roughly February and May, plankton blooms draw manta rays and the occasional whale shark to Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, the biggest fish in the sea and a genuine bucket-list encounter for advanced divers.

Best Time to Dive in Krabi

The dry season, November to April, is the diving season. Seas are calm, visibility is at its best and the boats run every day. December to March is the sweet spot and also the busiest, so book courses and day trips ahead over the New Year holidays.

Period Conditions Diving verdict
Nov to Feb Calm seas, 15 to 30 m visibility, water 28 to 29 C Best months. Peak season, book ahead
Mar to Apr Warm water up to 30 C, plankton blooms at the deep sites Excellent, and the top window for mantas and whale sharks at Hin Daeng
May to Oct Southwest monsoon, swell and reduced visibility. Many outer sites pause Off-peak. Ao Nang local reefs still dive on calm days, and it is cheaper

For a month-by-month view of weather across the region, see the Krabi travel guide. For India-based travellers the November-to-March window lines up with the winter and New Year holidays, which is also the cheapest time to fly into nearby Krabi Airport.

Your Krabi Dive Day, Hour by Hour

A day trip is the standard way to dive in Krabi, whether you are a first-timer or a certified diver. Here is how a typical two-dive day runs so you know what to expect.

• 7:30 to 8:30 am. Hotel pickup in Ao Nang or Krabi Town, then a short transfer to the pier and onto the dive boat.

• 9:00 am. Boat ride out to the first site, 30 to 90 minutes depending on how far you go. Gear check and a safety briefing on the way.

• 10:00 am. Dive one. Discover Scuba divers get their in-water briefing and shallow start here with the instructor.

• 11:30 am. Surface interval on the boat with lunch, fruit and water while your body offgasses.

• 1:00 pm. Dive two at the same or a second site, usually a little shallower than the first.

• 3:00 to 4:30 pm. Cruise back to the pier and transfer to your hotel. Fly no sooner than 18 to 24 hours after your last dive.

The shop provides everything technical: tank, regulator, buoyancy jacket, wetsuit, mask, fins and weights, plus the guide. Bring swimwear, a towel, reef-safe sunscreen, and cash for the park fee and tips. Leave the heavy packing lists behind, a dive day needs very little from you.

Krabi vs Phi Phi vs Phuket: Where to Dive

The same stretch of the Andaman Sea can be dived from three bases, and they share many of the same sites. The difference is access, price and scene.

Base Best for Signature sites The trade-off
Krabi (Ao Nang / Railay) Easy access, mixed levels, India-friendly day trips Local reefs plus boats to Phi Phi, Bida and the deep sites Fewer liveaboards. The best deep sites are a longer boat ride
Phi Phi Staying close to the reefs, blacktip sharks Bida Nok and Nai, Loh Samah, Anemone Reef Boats and rooms fill fast, and it leans party
Phuket Widest choice of dive shops, wrecks and liveaboards King Cruiser Wreck, Racha Islands, Similan trips Busier and pricier, with longer transfers to the best sites

For most Indian travellers, Krabi is the sweet spot: warm shallow reefs to learn on, day boats to the famous sites, and an airport with direct and one-stop options from the big metros. When you are ready to build the diving into a full trip, browse Krabi tour packages or the wider things to do in Krabi.

Plan Your Krabi Diving Trip

Krabi is a rare place where a nervous non-swimmer and a seasoned diver can share the same boat and both come up grinning. Go in the dry season, start with a Discover Scuba dive if you are new, and keep a spare day for the deep sites when the sea is calm. When you are ready to wrap the diving into the rest of the trip, browse Krabi tour packages and our wider Thailand tour packages to combine the reefs with the islands, beaches and food.

The check-in process was seamless. The accommodation itself was beyond my expectations.I really love the swimming pool and the buffet breakfast. His commitment was commendable. We took 4 night 5 days package. The hotels we stayed were fortunately good. Cab serv

Like we had a bangkok city tour in our package but reclining budha/watarun temple was not part of it. Better to have it included in basic packages which would improve customer satisfaction. But overall it was a good and hustle free experience.

    Krabi Travel FAQs

How much does scuba diving in Krabi cost in INR?

A Discover Scuba intro for non-certified divers starts around 3,000 THB, about Rs 8,550, for two local dives. A certified fun-dive day trip with two tanks runs a similar 3,000 to 3,500 THB, and a full PADI Open Water course is roughly 11,000 to 15,000 THB, about Rs 31,350 to 42,750. Rates usually include gear and lunch. A national park fee of about 400 THB may apply at Phi Phi-area sites.

Can non-certified beginners or non-swimmers dive in Krabi?

Yes. A Discover Scuba Diving session lets you dive to about 12 metres with an instructor and no licence, and it is designed for complete first-timers. You do not need to be a strong swimmer, only comfortable and healthy enough to be in the water. Full certification is different: to earn a PADI card you do have to pass a basic swim and float test. Diving without any instructor or certification is not recommended and most reputable shops will not allow it.

What is the best time of year for scuba diving in Krabi?

November to April is the dry season and the best time to dive, with calm seas, 15 to 30 metres of visibility and daily boats. December to March is the peak. If you want manta rays and whale sharks at Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, aim for roughly February to May when plankton blooms draw them in. May to October is the monsoon, when outer sites can pause, though Ao Nang's local reefs still dive on calm days.

What will I see scuba diving in Krabi?

Expect leopard sharks resting on the sand at Shark Point, green and hawksbill turtles, blacktip reef sharks in the Phi Phi shallows, plus moray eels, lionfish, seahorses, octopus and clouds of snapper and barracuda. The reefs sit in warm 27 to 30 C water at 5 to 25 metres. At the deep sites, Hin Daeng and Hin Muang bring the big draws: manta rays and the occasional whale shark in season.

How deep are the dive sites in Krabi?

Most Krabi reefs run from 5 to 25 metres, with the majority of dives around 18 to 20 metres, well within recreational limits. Beginner and Discover Scuba dives stay shallow, near 12 metres. The deep sites are the exception: Hin Daeng and Hin Muang drop past 40 metres and are kept for advanced divers, while the King Cruiser Wreck sits between about 12 and 30 metres.

Krabi vs Phi Phi vs Phuket, where should I dive?

Krabi, based in Ao Nang or Railay, is the easiest all-round choice, with shallow reefs to learn on and day boats to the famous sites. Phi Phi puts you closest to Bida and the blacktip sharks but fills up fast. Phuket has the widest choice of shops, wrecks and liveaboards to the Similans, but it is busier and pricier. Many of the same sites are shared, so pick your base for access and scene rather than the marine life.

Are there national park fees on Krabi dive trips?

Yes, on trips that enter a marine national park. Sites around Phi Phi fall inside the Hat Noppharat Thara and Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, which charges a foreigner entry fee of about 400 THB, roughly Rs 1,140, per visit. It is usually collected on the day and charged on top of your dive price, so carry some cash. Local Ao Nang reefs outside the park boundary do not attract the fee.

Do I need to know swimming to scuba dive in Krabi?

Not to try it. Discover Scuba is open to non-swimmers because an instructor stays with you and controls the dive in shallow water. To get certified with a PADI course you do need to show basic swimming, usually a 200 metre swim and a 10 minute float, but that is only for the licence. If you are nervous in water, tell your instructor and start with a Discover Scuba session at a calm Ao Nang site.

How many dives does a Krabi day trip include?

A standard day trip includes two dives, with a lunch and surface interval on the boat between them. Trips to further sites like Phi Phi, Bida or Hin Daeng often add a third dive. Discover Scuba first-timers usually do one or two shallow dives with the instructor. Remember to leave 18 to 24 hours between your last dive and any flight home.

Is scuba diving in Krabi safe?

Yes, when you dive with a licensed, reputable operator. Krabi's warm water, gentle currents and shallow reefs make it one of the friendlier places to learn, and shops follow standard safety drills, provide serviced gear and match sites to your level. Choose a PADI or SSI centre, be honest about your health and experience, follow the briefing, and never dive without a certified guide or instructor.
