Hot Spring In Krabi

Hot Springs in Krabi, Thailand

Feel at One with Nature Here in Krabi

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6533 reviews )

Hot Springs in Krabi (the Hot Stream Waterfall, or Namtok Ron)

The Krabi hot springs are a run of warm, mineral-rich pools locally called the Hot Stream Waterfall, or Namtok Ron, inside the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve near Klong Thom. They sit about 55 km south of Krabi Town, roughly a 50-minute drive, so most people fold them into a half day rather than a whole one. Warm water slides down a set of low limestone steps and gathers in smooth, waist-deep rock hollows that generations of locals have used as natural bathtubs. Slip in and the water sits at a steady 35 to 42 degrees Celsius, warm enough to unknot your shoulders after a day of island-hopping, cool enough that you are not rushing to climb out.

There is a real geologic story behind the warmth. The springs are fed by thermal sources that begin deep underground in volcanic chambers, so the water rises already loaded with natural elements and mineral salts. Along with the obvious relaxation, a soak in the Klong Thom hot springs has long been said to ease body aches, rheumatism and skin complaints. None of that is medically proven, and we would not tell you otherwise, but few people leave the water tense. Over centuries the flow has hollowed out cavities in the streambed, and those smooth stone basins are exactly where you sit and let the current do its work.

The springs also make sense as one half of a pair. A short walk deeper into the forest brings you to the Emerald Pool, known locally as Sra Morakot and sometimes called the Crystal Pool for its clear blue water. The trail runs 800 metres to about 1.2 km and crosses smaller streams and mini pools along the way, including the little Sra Geaw pool tucked under the tropical canopy. The Emerald Pool itself is not warm. It is fed by cool freshwater running down from the limestone hills above, which makes it the natural cold plunge after your hot soak. Further on, a second pool called the Blue Pool shows off the same startling azure colour. Warm springs first, cool pool second, is the sequence almost everyone follows.

Krabi hot springs at a glance

The quick view before you plan the rest of the details below.

Detail What to know
Where Klong Thom, Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve, south Krabi
Also known as Hot Stream Waterfall / Namtok Ron / Klong Thom hot springs
Water temperature 35 to 42 degrees Celsius (naturally warm, not scalding)
Entry fee (foreigner) About 200 THB adult, 100 THB child (approx Rs 570 / Rs 285)

From Krabi Town About 55 km, roughly 50 minutes by road
From Ao Nang About 65 km, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours
Ideal duration 2 to 3 hours (half a day with the Emerald Pool)
Best time November to April; arrive before 9 am to beat the tour coaches

Figures are current at the last update and are re-checked each cycle. Prices in Thai baht are set at the park; the rupee equivalents are a guide at about Rs 2.85 to the baht.

Entry fees and costs, in THB and INR

The hot springs and the Emerald Pool are two separate ticketed sites inside the same reserve, so budget for both if you plan to do the pair. Foreign visitors pay more than Thai nationals, which is standard for national park sites across Thailand. Carry cash. There is no ATM at the gate and cards are not accepted at the counters. The rupee figures below use a rate of about Rs 2.85 to the baht.

Item Thai baht Approx INR
Hot springs entry, foreigner adult 200 THB Rs 570
Hot springs entry, foreigner child 100 THB Rs 285
Emerald Pool entry, foreigner adult 200 THB Rs 570
Emerald Pool entry, foreigner child 100 THB Rs 285
Parking About 50 THB About Rs 145
Shuttle to the pools (where run) About 20 THB About Rs 60
Return taxi from Ao Nang / Krabi Town 1,500 to 2,500 THB Rs 4,300 to Rs 7,100

A couple visiting both sites and sharing a taxi from Ao Nang lands at roughly 2,300 to 3,300 THB for the day, or about Rs 6,500 to Rs 9,400 all in, before food. Joining a group tour usually works out cheaper per head than a private taxi and takes the driving off your plate.

Full ticket details sit on our Krabi hot springs entry fees page.

How to reach the Krabi hot springs

The reserve is in Klong Thom district, well south of the beaches, so there is no walking or public bus that gets you there cleanly. You have three realistic ways in.

By taxi or private car. From Krabi Town it is about 55 km and a 50-minute drive; from Ao Nang, closer to 65 km and 1 to 1.5 hours. Take Highway 4 south, then turn onto Route 4038 toward Klong Thom and follow the reserve signs. A return taxi with a couple of hours of waiting typically runs 1,500 to 2,500 THB, so it is worth splitting with another pair.

By join-in tour. The easiest option for most visitors. A half-day tour pairs the hot springs with the Emerald Pool and often the Tiger Cave Temple, sorts the driving and the tickets, and drops you back at your hotel. It usually costs less per person than a private taxi.

By rented scooter or car. Doable if you are confident on Thai roads. The route is straightforward on Highway 4, but the last stretch is quiet countryside, so download an offline map before you set off because the phone signal thins out near the reserve.

Step-by-step directions and current drive times are on our how to reach the Krabi hot springs page.

Best time to visit and opening hours

The reserve is open daily from about 8:30 am to 6 pm, with last entry around 5 pm. Timing your arrival matters more than the calendar here. Come on a weekday and get there before 9 am, and you can have the warm pools almost to yourself. The tour coaches from Ao Nang and Krabi Town tend to roll in from mid-morning, and by midday the bathtubs get busy and the walkways slick with foot traffic.

For the wider season, November to April is the dry stretch and the most comfortable time to visit, with clearer forest trails and calmer water at the Emerald Pool. The springs run warm all year, but heavy rain in the May to October wet season can raise stream levels and cloud the Emerald Pool, and the forest path gets muddy. If you are visiting in the monsoon, go on a dry morning and check that the pools are open before you commit to the drive.

Live opening hours are kept on our Krabi hot springs timings page.

What to pack for the Krabi hot springs

This is a forest-and-water outing, not a beach day, so a few specifics make it far more comfortable. Pack light, but do not skip these.

What to bring Why it matters
Swimwear (worn under clothes) Changing rooms are basic; arrive ready to get in
Water shoes or grippy sandals The stone bathtubs and steps are smooth and slippery
Quick-dry towel You go from warm springs straight into the cool Emerald Pool
Cash in Thai baht No ATM or card machines at the counters
Refillable water bottle Warm soaking dehydrates faster than you expect
Dry-bag or zip pouch Keeps phone and cash safe near the water
Insect repellent You are inside a tropical nature reserve
Reef-safe sunscreen Open sections between the trees still catch strong sun
Light change of clothes For the drive back after the pools

Safety tips for bathing in the hot springs

The springs are gentle, but a few habits keep the visit easy.

Limit your soak. Keep each soak to about 10 to 20 minutes, then cool off. The warm mineral water can leave you light-headed if you stay in too long, especially in the heat.

Watch your footing. Step carefully. The stone basins and the steps between them are worn smooth and stay wet, so water shoes and a slow pace prevent the most common slip.

Soak, do not swim. Do not dunk your head or drink the water. It is mineral spring water, not treated, and it is meant for soaking, not swimming laps.

Mind the kids. Keep a close eye on young children in the warm pools and never leave them unattended near the Emerald Pool, which is deeper and cooler.

Respect the weather. After heavy rain, stream flow rises and the water clouds. If staff have roped off a section, respect it, and skip the visit on a day of serious downpour.

Practical tips for the whole visit are collected on our Krabi hot springs tips page.

Combine the hot springs with the Emerald Pool and Blue Pool

The hot springs are best done as a pair with the cool pools next door, and the order makes the difference. Warm up in the springs first, then walk the 800 metre to 1.2 km forest trail to the Emerald Pool (Sra Morakot) and take the cold plunge in its clear blue water. If it is open and you have the energy, carry on a little further to the Blue Pool, which shows the same vivid colour and is a quiet spot to sit for a while. The Blue Pool sometimes closes seasonally, so ask at the gate before you set out for it.

Because the whole loop takes only two to three hours, most travellers pair it with one more Klong Thom-area stop. The Tiger Cave Temple and its long stairway climb sits within reach, and many half-day tours string the springs, the pools and the temple into a single morning.

For more ideas on filling out the day, see our guide to things to do in Krabi, or browse our Krabi things-to-do blog.

Planning a Krabi hot springs trip from India

For Indian travellers, the hot springs are an easy, low-cost half day inside a Krabi itinerary rather than a trip of their own. Reckon on about Rs 570 per adult for the springs and the same again for the Emerald Pool, plus the shared cost of a taxi or a tour. The whole outing, tickets and transport included, sits comfortably under Rs 5,000 per person when you join a group. It slots neatly beside beach days at Ao Nang and Railay and an island-hopping trip to Phi Phi.

If you would rather have the hot springs, the Emerald Pool and the rest of Krabi arranged for you, our customisable Krabi travel packages bundle the transfers, hotels and day trips, so you turn up and soak. Every itinerary can be shaped around the pace and budget you want.

His commitment was commendable. We took 4 night 5 days package. The hotels we stayed were fortunately good. Cab serv

Like we had a bangkok city tour in our package but reclining budha/watarun temple was not part of it. Better to have it included in basic packages which would improve customer satisfaction. But overall it was a good and hustle free experience.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Get your answers — before you plan your trip.

    Krabi Travel FAQs

How much is the entrance fee to the Krabi hot springs?

Foreign visitors pay about 200 THB per adult and 100 THB per child, which is roughly Rs 570 and Rs 285. The Emerald Pool next door is a separate ticket at a similar rate, so budget for both if you plan to do the pair. Add about 50 THB for parking and around 20 THB for the shuttle where it runs. Bring cash, as there is no ATM at the gate.

How do I get to the Krabi hot springs from Ao Nang or Krabi Town?

The reserve is in Klong Thom, about 55 km and a 50-minute drive from Krabi Town, or roughly 65 km and 1 to 1.5 hours from Ao Nang. Take Highway 4 south then Route 4038. A return taxi runs about 1,500 to 2,500 THB, or you can join a half-day tour that also covers the Emerald Pool and often the Tiger Cave Temple, which usually costs less per person.

What are the opening hours and the best time to visit?

The site is open daily from about 8:30 am to 6 pm, with last entry near 5 pm. The best time is a weekday morning before 9 am, before the tour coaches arrive and the pools fill up. Across the year, November to April is the dry season and the most comfortable time to visit, while heavy monsoon rain from May to October can cloud the water and muddy the forest trail.

Can you swim in the Krabi hot springs, and are they safe for kids?

You soak rather than swim. The warm pools are shallow stone basins meant for sitting in, so keep each soak to about 10 to 20 minutes and cool off between dips. They are fine for families, but watch young children closely, as the stones are slippery and the nearby Emerald Pool is deeper and much cooler. Water shoes help everyone keep their footing.

How hot is the water in the Krabi hot springs?

The bathing pools sit at a steady 35 to 42 degrees Celsius, warm and comfortable rather than scalding, a little like a natural bathtub. The water is fed by thermal sources deep underground, so the temperature holds year-round. The nearby Emerald Pool, by contrast, is cool freshwater from the limestone hills, which is why the two make such a good hot-then-cold pairing.

What should I wear and carry for the hot springs?

Wear your swimwear under your clothes, since changing rooms are basic, and bring water shoes or grippy sandals for the smooth wet stone. Pack a quick-dry towel, cash in Thai baht, a refillable water bottle, a dry-bag for your phone, insect repellent for the reserve and reef-safe sunscreen for the open sections. A light change of clothes for the drive back is worth it too.

Can I visit the hot springs and the Emerald Pool on the same trip?

Yes, and you should. They sit in the same reserve, linked by an 800 metre to 1.2 km forest trail. Soak in the warm springs first, then walk over for a cool plunge in the Emerald Pool (Sra Morakot). If the Blue Pool further along is open, it is a quiet extra stop. The whole loop takes two to three hours, which is why most tours combine the two.

What is the Hot Stream Waterfall (Namtok Ron)?

Namtok Ron, meaning Hot Stream Waterfall, is the proper local name for the Krabi hot springs. Warm mineral water cascades down low limestone steps in the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve near Klong Thom and collects in smooth rock pools shaped like natural bathtubs. It is the same place people search for as the Krabi hot springs or the Klong Thom hot springs.

How long should I soak in the hot springs?

Keep each soak to about 10 to 20 minutes, then step out and cool down before going back in. The warm mineral water is relaxing but can leave you light-headed if you stay in too long in the tropical heat. Alternating a warm soak with a cool dip in the Emerald Pool is the comfortable way to spend a couple of hours here.

Is the Krabi hot springs worth visiting?

For most travellers, yes, especially paired with the Emerald Pool. It is an unusual, low-cost half day, warm natural pools in a forest reserve with a genuine geological backstory, and it balances out a Krabi trip otherwise built around beaches and islands. Go early on a weekday to avoid the crowds, and it is one of the more relaxing things to do in the area.
