Best Time to Visit Himachal Pradesh

April to June: Pleasant Weather, Peak Sightseeing
Summer temperatures sit between about 5°C and 24°C, cooler than most of India. This is the easiest window for sightseeing, high passes open up, and adventure activities run at full swing. It is also the busiest season, so book stays early.
July to September: Monsoon, Travel With Care
The hills see heavy rain and the risk of landslides on mountain roads, so this is the season to be cautious. Early monsoon can still work for lower valleys like Kangra and Dharamshala if you keep the itinerary flexible.
October to March: Snow Season
Temperatures drop between about 0°C and 13°C and the higher reaches get snowfall. From late December through March, Solang Valley, Kufri and Narkanda turn into snow-play and skiing hubs. Pack heavy woollens and check road status before high-altitude drives.

Shimla
The state capital sits above 2,000 metres and is the classic first stop. Walk the Ridge and Mall Road, ride up to Jakhoo Temple, and take the short hop to Kufri for a Himalayan nature park and adventure activities. A mass at Christ Church and a wander through Lower Bazaar round out a family day here.
Kullu and Manali
Roughly a 7-hour drive (235 km) from Shimla, these two are almost always visited together. Manali is the base for Solang Valley, Rohtang Pass, Hadimba Temple and Vashisht hot springs, with pine and deodar forests and high mountains all around. It is the busiest adventure hub in the state.
Dharamshala and McLeodganj
About 6 hours (224 km) from Shimla, set in the Kangra Valley below the Dhauladhar range. This is the Tibetan heart of Himachal: Namgyal Monastery, the Dalai Lama's residence in suburb McLeodganj, Bhagsu waterfall, and the popular Triund trek that starts right above town.
Dalhousie
A colonial-era hill station about 9 hours (316 km) out, known for its wooded ridges, churches and quiet. It is the gateway to Khajjiar, the meadow often called the mini Switzerland of India, and to the Kalatop wildlife reserve.
Kasauli
A small, green hill town about 2 hours (71 km) from the plains, good for a slow weekend. The Timber Trail, Monkey Point and a walk down Mall Road are the usual stops.
Kasol and Parvati Valley
Around 7 hours (217 km) away on the banks of the Parvati, Kasol is the backpacker capital and the launch point for the Kheerganga and Sar Pass treks, the village of Tosh, and the Manikaran Gurudwara with its hot springs.
Kheerganga
Deep in the Parvati Valley, Kheerganga is reached on foot and rewards the trek with natural hot springs and wide Himalayan views. The trail suits both beginners and seasoned trekkers.
Parwanoo
A hill town on the Haryana-Himachal border, about 2 hours (83 km) up, covered in apple orchards. The Timber Trail cable car and easy hikes make it a soft-landing first stop from Chandigarh.
Kangra
About 6 hours (207 km) away, Kangra is temple country: the Kangra Fort, Kareri Lake and the trails toward Indrahar Pass sit in a green, spiritual valley.
Kufri
Just 24 km (under an hour) from Shimla, Kufri is the easy snow and skiing add-on, with the Himalayan Nature Park and Mahasu Peak nearby.
Khajjiar
The mini Switzerland of India, a round meadow ringed by cedar forest near Dalhousie. Paragliding, horse riding and zorbing run here in season, with Khajjiar Lake and a hilltop Shiva statue alongside.
Bir Billing
The paragliding capital of India, about 7 hours (199 km) from Shimla. Beyond the flights, Bir has Tibetan monasteries, the Gunehar waterfall and a well-known cafe scene for a relaxed couple of days.
Tirthan Valley
A quiet valley in the Kullu district at around 1,600 metres, on the edge of the Great Himalayan National Park. Trout fishing, river crossing, and the Jalori Pass and Jibhi day trips make it a favourite for travellers who want the hills without the crowds.
Spiti Valley
The big one, about 11 hours (413 km) of long winding roads into a cold high-altitude desert. Spiti is snow-capped peaks, ancient monasteries at Dhankar and Key, the Pin Valley National Park and Suraj Tal. Give it its own multi-day loop rather than squeezing it into a shorter trip.

How to Reach Himachal Pradesh
By air
Chandigarh is the main gateway with the widest connections, followed by the smaller state airports at Bhuntar (for Kullu-Manali), Gaggal (for Kangra-Dharamshala) and Shimla. From the airport you continue by cab or bus into the hills.
By train
The nearest broad-gauge railheads are Chandigarh and Pathankot. From Kalka, the UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla toy train climbs to Shimla, and the Kangra Valley Railway serves the Dharamshala side. Most travellers pair a train to the plains with a road transfer up.
By road
Himachal is well connected by road from Delhi and Chandigarh via national highways, with HRTC and private Volvo buses running overnight to Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala. Within the state, a private cab is the most flexible way to move between towns, and it is what most packages include.
