About Old Parliament House

Old Parliament House Singapore

The Old Parliament House Building was used as the Parliament House building between the years of 1965 and 1999. This means that this was where the Parliament sessions were conducted and plans for a better tomorrow of Singapore were made. Constructed in the year 1827, this is the oldest government structure and also the oldest standing structure in the Lion City. So, to ensure safety and to accommodate modern amenities, the House was shifted to a new building that stands adjacent to this building. And the Old Parliament House was preserved as it reflects the classic colonial architecture.

The site where the Old Parliament House building stands also plays an important role in the history of Singapore. Back in 1989, when the renovation work of this building was being carried out, some archaeological pieces were dug out from the land. These findings included stoneware dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. Studies tell that these are from the are the remains of the inhabitants who lived in this area during that period. The riverfront of the Old Parliament House is also said to be the site where the founder of modern Singapore Stamford Raffles had set his foot first on 29 January 1819.
