Founded in 926 AD and dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Tirta Empul is one of the biggest and largest water temples in Indonesia. Located close to the town, Tampaksiring, in the village of Manukaya, Tirta Empul is clearly signposted from the Tampaksiring. Manukaya is a 30-minutes drive from Ubud. Tirta Empul is open seven days a week. The visiting hours are from 9 am to 5 pm.

As soon as you walk through the entrance, you will find yourself in the central courtyard of the temple, called, ‘Jaba Pura’. It is a large open space, with many local vendors offering bananas to tourists. At the end of the central courtyard are two large doorways built into the walls. Once you pass through these doorways, you step into the inner courtyard.

The Jaba Tengah is the most famous part of the temple. This part has two famous purification pools. The water in these pools is said to have magical powers, and the Hindus and the Balinese come here to purify themselves by taking a dip under the 30 spouts each.

Jeoran – It is behind the purification pools that the final section of the holy temple is. This part of the temple is overlooked by the tourists. Jeoran is a nice place to sit and relax. It is the inner courtyard of the temple. It also has brightly decorated Hindu shrines and water springs to fill the purification pools. It is where people come to pray. The Koi Pool – One the way out of the temple, one would pass through the Koi pool. Fat koi swim in the pond, awaiting their meals from the tourists. On the right side of the pond is a row of local sellers, selling trinkets to the tourists
