It was constructed in the year 1853 by the great Mughal Emperor, Akbar. Initially, the fort was named as Illahabas – meaning blessed by God. The fort was constructed in a way that it could enclose the famous Akshayavat tree. People committed suicide here as they believed that they would attain salvation here – such was their faith. The famous Patalpuri temple is also here which is basically said to be the home of all gates of hell.

It is basically a large-walled burial complex situated near the Allahabad Junction Station. It also houses various tombs in the premises and has three mausoleums made of sandstone.
