Trunyan or Terunyan is a Balinese village located on the eastern shore of Lake Batur can be found at the foot of Mt. Abang. A quiet village which is popular worldwide as the ‘Skull Island of Bali’ has earned such a name because of its peculiar treatment of dead bodies, in which they are placed on openly on the ground, simply covered with cloth and bamboo canopies, and left to decompose. The influence of a nearby tree is said to remove the putrid smell of the corpses. The islands in Trunyan Bali is culturally isolated and is inhabited by the Bali Aga people who follow ancient traditions which predate the arrival of Hinduism, Buddhism or Islam. According to copper plate inscriptions found in one of the shrines of the main temple of Trunyan, the temple must be dating back to at least the 10th century AD. The village itself, however, is believed to be much older than the temple.

This unique mepasah funerary custom has attracted a lot of tourists to Trunyan in the last couple of years and tourism is gradually becoming a source of income for the villagers. Not all villager in Trunyan gets a place in the open cemetery. Only those individuals who have completed the life’s journey and has died of natural causes get a place in the open cemetery. People who die due to illness, unnatural deaths, suicides or accidents are not eligible to be left in this cemetery and are buried in Sema Banatas cemetery which is specially reserved for burials. Unmarried individuals are also considered as ineligible for the open cemetery and are buried.
