    Gwalior is steeped in history and is packed with beautiful monuments and temples. There are plenty of cultural as well as historical places to visit in Gwalior for tourists interested in its rich heritage. While the incredible Gwalior Fort offers a stunning view of the city, Madhav National Park lets you get lost in the wilderness.

    Interesting places you can’t skip in Gwalior

    1. Gwalior Fort

    This is the star attraction of the city and is great for Gwalior sightseeing. The fort is visible from every nook and corner of this historic city. Perched on a high cliff, this was known to be one of the most impenetrable fortresses in India. Among the best tourist places to visit in Gwalior, it is also referred to as the ‘the pearl amongst fortresses in India’, by the Mughal emperor Babur. This fort is gorgeous, so do take out the entire day if you want to have a look at the entire fort.

    2. Jai Vilas Palace

    This grand palace is a symbol of opulence and culture of Madhya Pradesh. It was built by the Maharaja of Gwalior, Jayaji Rao Scindia, in order to have a grand welcome for King Edward VII, the then Prince of Wales. Today, also the royal descendants of Scindia family live here and there’s a museum inside the palace. There’s a strong reflection of the colonial period on the layout of the palace.

    3. Gujari Mahal Archaeological Museum

    This one is for the history buffs! This massive archeological museum is located inside the fort, but it deserves a separate mention. This 15th Century Mahal offers a great insight into the rulers of Gwalior. You will also see a large collection of images of Bagh Cave paintings here.

    4. Man Mandir Palace

    Also located inside the fort, the lovely Man Mandir Palace was built between 1486 and 1516 by Man Singh Tomar. Though some part of the palace has disintegrated with time, there are still some sights to see which provide an insight into the royal lives of the Tomars.

    5. Gwalior Zoo

    This zoo was also established by the Scindia family back in 1922. This is also known as the Gandhi zoo. This lovely zoo houses a variety of rare animals like sambhars, bison, hyena, spotted deer and a white tiger as well. You can also spot crocodiles, monkeys and some birds as well. There’s also a Phool Bagh here which was inaugurated by the Prince of Wales many ions ago.

    6. Teli Ka Mandir

    The detailed and intricate artwork of this lovely temple will leave you astounded. tourist places to visit in Gwalior. This Hindu temple is the tallest structure in the fort and has both the architectural amalgamation of North and South styles. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishu. This temple was used to process oil before the Britishers occupied this fort, that’s why the name Teli Ka Mandir.

    7. Sun Temple

    This is one of the most specular temples in the city of Gwalior. Dedicated to the holy Sun God, this temple was contracted in 1988 by the famous industrialist G.D. Birla. The interior of the temple is in marble, which gives it a very serene environment. The most captivating part of the temple is the red sandstone exterior which is a stark contrast to the lovely lush green gardens that surround the temple.

    Entry timings: 6:30 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm

    8. Madhav National Park

    If visiting the zoo doesn’t appeal you, then you must visit the Madhav National Park in Gwalior. There are many wild animals that can be spotted here like blackbuck, nilgai, leopard and chinkara. You can also spot some migratory and domestic birds like heron, kingfisher and more.

    Entry timings: 6:30 am to 10:00 am and 2:30 pm to 6:00 pm
    Ticket charges: 15 INR Indians and 150 INR for foreigners

    9. Tomb of Mohammad Ghaus

    The tomb of the 16th Century Sufi saint is one of the best places to visit in Gwalior. He was a great advisor to King Babur and a teach to Tansen, who was a music legend. The tomb is built in a classic Mughal style of architecture and is a great tourist places to visit in Gwalior.

    10. Tighra Dam

    Amongst the best tourist places to visit in Gwalior, Tighra Dam is a river site and is a great place to come with kids. There are boating activities that take place here as well. For the adventurous types, you can try speed boating as well. This is truly one of the best places to visit in Gwalior.

    Ticket charges: 50 INR/ person for a speedboat; 50 INR/person for Jalpari Boat; 100 INR/person for a for paddle boat; 350 INR/ person for a water scooter
    Time required: 2 hours
