Hyderabad to Kerala is about 1,090 km by road to Kochi, a drive of roughly 18 to 20 hours that most people split across two days. Fly it and you are there in about 90 minutes; the straight-line distance is only around 840 km, which is why the road number looks so much bigger. Kerala is a long state, so the real answer depends on where you are headed: Wayanad, the closest entry, sits near 830 km, while Thiruvananthapuram in the deep south is closer to 1,275 km. This guide gives you a clean figure for every major Kerala destination, the best route and where to break the journey, how the car drive compares with train and flight, and the stops worth building the trip around.

There is no single “Hyderabad to Kerala” distance because Kerala is a state, not a point on the map. The figure changes by around 400 km depending on which corner you drive to. Here is the clean number for each major destination, all via the standard route through Bangalore and the Western Ghats.
Why do the numbers vary so much? Three reasons. The aerial distance is only about 760 km, but roads bend around the Deccan plateau and the Ghats, adding 300 km or more. Your endpoint matters, as the spread from Wayanad to Trivandrum shows. And your route matters: the Wayanad line cuts through the hills, while Kochi and the south run down the Coimbatore-Palakkad corridor.
Use this to pick your entry point before you fix the itinerary. Distances are by road via Bangalore unless noted.
| Kerala destination | Road distance | Drive time | Typical route from Hyderabad |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wayanad (Kalpetta) | ~830-850 km | ~15-16 hrs | Bangalore to Mysore to Gundlupet to Sultan Bathery |
| Kozhikode (Calicut) | ~924-940 km | ~16-17 hrs | Bangalore to Mysore to Wayanad to Thamarassery ghat |
| Munnar | ~1,050-1,091 km | ~18-19 hrs | Bangalore to Salem to Coimbatore to Marayoor |
| Kochi (Cochin) | ~1,090-1,110 km | ~18-20 hrs | Bangalore to Salem to Coimbatore to Palakkad |
| Thiruvananthapuram | ~1,250-1,275 km | ~22-24 hrs | via Kochi to Alappuzha to Kollam |
Straight-line (aerial) distance Hyderabad to Kochi is about 760 km. The road figure is longer because the highway routes around the plateau and the Ghats.

The road trip is the point of this guide, but it helps to see how the drive stacks up against the other ways down. If your priority is time, fly. If it is the journey itself, drive.
| Mode | Route / distance | Typical time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car (self-drive or taxi) | ~1,090 km to Kochi via Bangalore | ~18-20 hrs, 2-3 days with halts | Road-trippers who want the stops |
| Flight | Hyderabad (HYD) to Kochi (COK), nonstop | ~1 hr 30 min | Speed; skipping the drive entirely |
| Train | Hyderabad to Ernakulam / Kochi | ~24-27 hrs | Overnight comfort on a budget |
| Bus | Hyderabad to Kochi / Kozhikode, sleeper | ~20-24 hrs | Direct budget travel, no driving |
Trains and buses run daily on this corridor, but numbers, timings and fares change through the year, so check current schedules on IRCTC or the operator site before you book. For a drive-first plan, the flight is the useful comparison: it turns a two-day road trip into a same-morning arrival, which is handy if you only have the drive one way and want to fly back.

The spine of the drive is NH44 south out of Hyderabad through Kurnool and Anantapur to Bangalore, roughly 570 km and a comfortable first day. From Bangalore you have a choice. For Wayanad and the north, cut through Mysore and Gundlupet. For Kochi, Munnar and the south, carry on via Salem, Coimbatore and the Palakkad gap into Kerala.
Good halt towns are Bangalore, Salem and Coimbatore, all with plenty of hotels and 24-hour fuel. If you route via Wayanad instead, note that the NH766 forest stretch through Bandipur between Gundlupet and Sultan Bathery is closed to traffic from 9 pm to 6 am. Plan to clear it in daylight. For a longer, planned version of the drive, our Kerala itinerary guide maps out how many days each region really needs.

The drive back is the same ~1,090 km from Kochi to Hyderabad, about 18 to 20 hours, and the same halts work in reverse: Coimbatore, then Bangalore, then home. From Wayanad the return is shorter at roughly 830 km. Many travellers drive down over two or three days and fly back from Kochi in 90 minutes, leaving the car with a one-way rental or a driver. If you are starting from the far south, Thiruvananthapuram to Hyderabad runs about 1,250 to 1,275 km, so give it three days rather than two.

Aim for September to March. By September the southwest monsoon has pulled back, so the Ghats are still green but the roads have dried out and the landslide risk on the hill sections has dropped. October to February is the sweet spot, with cool mornings and clear driving weather right through Karnataka and Kerala.

Half the reason to drive rather than fly is what sits along the way. These seven stops turn a long haul into a genuine road trip; pick two or three depending on how many days you have.
A UNESCO World Heritage site of boulder-strewn ruins about four hours off the NH44 corridor near Hospet. The Virupaksha Temple and the old Hampi Bazaar are the highlights, best seen at sunrise before the heat builds. Worth a night if you can spare it.
The natural first-night halt, roughly 570 km from Hyderabad. Break the drive with an evening at Cubbon Park or a walk around Bangalore Palace, refuel and rest, then push south in the morning.
About 150 km past Bangalore on the Wayanad line. The Mysore Palace lit up in the evening is the draw, with Brindavan Gardens and the Devaraja Market close by. A good lunch-and-photos stop rather than an overnight.
Your first taste of Kerala on the northern route, and the closest hill district to Hyderabad at around 830 km. Wildlife safaris at the sanctuary, Edakkal caves and misty tea slopes reward a two-night stay. Clear the Bandipur forest stretch before 9 pm.
Kerala’s best-known hill station, wrapped in tea plantations at roughly 1,050 km from Hyderabad. Echo Point, the Kundala lake and the Eravikulam park make it worth two nights. The final climb from Marayoor is slow, so arrive in daylight.
The usual endpoint at about 1,090 km. Fort Kochi’s Chinese fishing nets, an evening Kathakali show and the spice warehouses of Mattancherry give the drive a satisfying finish. It is also the easiest place to fly home from.
If you have time to push past Kochi, Kumarakom on Vembanad Lake is the backwater postcard, with a bird sanctuary and houseboat stays. A relaxed final leg before you turn around or fly out.

Distances, routes, timing and costs for the Hyderabad to Kerala drive.
By road it is about 1,090 km to Kochi, roughly 18 to 20 hours of driving. Because Kerala is a long state the figure changes by destination: Wayanad is around 830 km, Munnar about 1,050 km, and Thiruvananthapuram in the far south near 1,275 km. The straight-line distance to Kochi is only about 840 km.
Flying. A nonstop Hyderabad (HYD) to Kochi (COK) flight takes about 1 hour 30 minutes against 18 to 20 hours by road. If you want the road trip but not both directions, drive down over two or three days and fly back in 90 minutes.
Plan four to seven days. The drive alone is two to three days each way to Kochi, so a comfortable trip is roughly two days down with halts, three to four days in Kerala, and the return. Add a day if you are going as far south as Trivandrum.
Wayanad, at around 830 to 850 km and about 15 to 16 hours by road via Mysore and Sultan Bathery. It is the natural first stop if you want to reach Kerala in the shortest drive.
Take NH44 south through Kurnool and Anantapur to Bangalore (~570 km). For Kochi and the south, continue via Salem, Coimbatore and the Palakkad gap. For Wayanad and the north, cut through Mysore and Gundlupet instead.
It is not advisable. At about 1,090 km to Kochi you would need 18 to 20 hours of non-stop driving, which is unsafe. Split it with a night halt in Bangalore and another in Coimbatore or Salem.
For a self-drive round trip, budget roughly 30,000 to 50,000 rupees for fuel, tolls and mid-range stays, depending on your vehicle and how many nights you spend in Kerala. Hiring a driver or a full package changes the figure, so check current rates before you plan.
Kochi (Cochin International, COK) is the most connected and central, ideal for Munnar, the backwaters and Fort Kochi. Fly into Kozhikode (CCJ) for Wayanad and the north, or Trivandrum (TRV) for the deep south.
Around 24 to 27 hours to Ernakulam or Kochi, depending on the train. Services run daily, but numbers and timings change through the year, so check the current schedule on IRCTC before booking.
Yes. Sleeper and semi-sleeper coaches run daily from Hyderabad to Kochi and Kozhikode, taking roughly 20 to 24 hours. Operators and fares vary, so confirm current timings and prices when you book.
The same as the outbound drive: about 1,090 km from Kochi to Hyderabad, roughly 18 to 20 hours. From Wayanad it is shorter at around 830 km, and from Thiruvananthapuram about 1,250 to 1,275 km.
September to March, when the monsoon has eased, the Ghats are green and the roads are safe. Avoid June to September, when heavy rain brings landslide risk on the hill sections. Summer is cheaper but hot on the plains.
