About Merdeka Square In Kuala Lumpur
Merdeka Square, formerly known as “Selangor Club Padang” or just “Padang,” is a very popular tourist attraction. Merdeka Square literally means “Independence Square,” where the Malaysian Flag was hoisted for the first time on 31st August 1957 at midnight. The square is surrounded by multiple flags and in the center is the world’s largest flagpole (95 meters tall). The surrounding flags represent various Federal Territories and Malaysian provinces. Merdeka Square holds a huge historical significance in Malaysian history and is surrounded by various other historical buildings. A tourist can spend quite a while here just being mesmerized by the colonial architecture of all the buildings. Right next to the square is Sultan Abdul Samad Building, formerly known as “Government Offices.” To the south of Merdeka Square, is Kuala Lumpur City Gallery, which houses miniature models explaining the story of Kuala Lumpur. It also hosts a Spectacular City Model show in the gallery itself. It has opened to the public recently and has gained a lot of attention from tourists.
Merdeka Square at night is a sight not to be missed. All the surrounding buildings, as well as Merdeka Square, are lit up for the light show. This show showcases the colonial architecture of the buildings. The square looks like a vision lit up with beautifully colored lights. As the former mayor of Kuala Lumpur announced that the roads would be closed from 9 PM to 4 AM, many of the local families, as well as the tourists, started walking around at night to enjoy their nights.
There is also a fountain, where families and tourists sit and enjoy a peaceful and quiet evening. On 31st August every year, there is a parade the Independence Day parade which is not to be missed. The culture of Malaysia is depicted beautifully in the parade every year and is a joyous occasion for everyone present.
Merdeka Square at night is filled with families and tourists, making it a vibrant surrounding. On the first week of every month, food trucks will be operating to cater to the crowd that visits this historical treasure. There are multiple races which are also arranged around the square to keep the public entertained. Merdeka Square at night gathers every person present and transforms them into one single community.
