Kargil district was previously known as Purig region. The town of Kargil is situated on the banks of the Suru River, a major tributary of Indus River. Compared with the barren landscape of Leh, Kargil is much greener and has a variety of landscapes. Suru Valley is the most beautiful and scenic valleys in Ladakh. The lofty Nun (7135m) and Kun (7035m) peaks give rise to the Suru River. The green hillsides of the Suru valley and beautiful villages are a striking contrast to the Himalayan glaciers in Ladakh. Sankoo, a small township 40 km south of Kargil, is the base for a four-day trekking route to Mulbekh and a three-day trek to Dras. Another charming settlement of Panikhar, about two hours from Kargil, is the base for Nun and Kun summits. Treks from Panikhar also lead to Pahalgam and Kishtwar in the Kashmir Valley. Rangdum is located near the famous Drang-drung glacier. The town is about halfway between Kargil and Padum.
Ideal Time to Visit Kargil
The best time to visit Kargil is in the summer months of May through September. This is the time when daytime temperatures are warm and the nights remain pleasantly cool. Rainfall is rare in Kargil with occasional showers. These months are perfect for sightseeing in Kargil. Trekking and rafting are other major adventure activities in Kargil to enjoy. The winter season kicks in from November and lasts till February. Snowfall in Kargil in winter months shut access to Kashmir Valley and Zanskar region.
