"It was Kerala trip with the team. Over all it was good and reasonable experience but there are some areas or improvements 1. Tour manager and driver both are good but they have coordination problem…"
Veerakeralam in Brief: A Coimbatore Suburb, Not a Kerala Town
Veerakeralam (also written Veera Keralam) is a western suburb of Coimbatore city in Tamil Nadu, with the PIN code 641007. A panchayat town until 2011, it was then merged into the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation. Despite the name, it is not in Kerala. It sits on the western edge of Coimbatore along Thondamuthur Road, about 8 km by road from Gandhipuram and 3 km from Vadavalli, with the Western Ghats filling the skyline behind it. Around 23,841 people lived here at the 2011 Census. Most visitors come for one of three reasons: they are moving to the area, they are visiting family, or they want a quiet base close to the Marudhamalai and Perur temples. This guide covers all three, from the post office quirk and the town buses that stop here to the places worth your day and where to sleep.
This guide was built from the 2011 Census, India Post’s office records, IMD climate normals for Coimbatore and each attraction’s published timings.
Key Takeaways
- Use PIN 641007 for any Veerakeralam address. Mail is delivered through the S.B. Institute sub post office on Maruthamalai Road.
- Reach Gandhipuram in about 25 minutes by car (8 km), or catch a town bus toward Vadavalli and Thondamuthur.
- Visit Perur Pateeswarar Temple (5 km) and Marudhamalai (11 km) on the same morning. Both open early and close for a midday break.
- Stay in Vadavalli or on Maruthamalai Road for budget rooms from about ₹1,600, or RS Puram for mid-range hotels. Veerakeralam itself is residential.
- Plan outdoor trips for November to March. October and November are the wettest months in Coimbatore, not July.

Perur Pateeswarar Temple (5 km)
The Perur Pateeswarar Temple is the closest major sight and the one locals are proudest of. The sanctum is traditionally credited to the Chola king Karikala, and Chola, Hoysala and Vijayanagara rulers added to it over the centuries. The part you should not miss is the Kanaka Sabha, a pillared hall added in the Nayak period, where Shiva is carved in several forms of the Ananda Tandava dance. Look up at the ceiling for the carved stone chains.

Where Is Veerakeralam? Location and Neighbouring Areas
Veerakeralam lies on the western fringe of Coimbatore city, between the Maruthamalai Road corridor to the north and the Noyyal river plain around Perur to the south. The main road through it is Thondamuthur Road, which runs west from Vadavalli toward Thondamuthur and the Siruvani foothills. Look west from almost any rooftop here and the ridge of the Western Ghats is right there.
The town blends into its neighbours without a clear boundary, which is why addresses often carry two locality names. Vadavalli is the busy junction immediately north, with the bus stand, banks and the bigger shops. Seeranaickenpalayam, Mullai Nagar and Nagarajapuram sit on the city side to the east. P.N. Pudur and the Sugarcane Breeding Institute campus line Maruthamalai Road. Smaller residential pockets inside or just around Veerakeralam include TG Nagar, Pongaliyur Road, Linganoor and Thirumurugan Nagar. Head south and you reach Perur and Kovaipudur. Head west and the road runs out through farmland to Thondamuthur.
Two mix-ups come up often enough to settle here. First, Veerakeralam is not in Kerala. The nearest Kerala town of any size is Palakkad, about 52 km away through the Walayar border on NH 544. Second, it is a different place from Veerakeralamputhur, a taluk in Tenkasi district in the far south of Tamil Nadu, more than 350 km away. If an address says “Veerakeralam, Coimbatore” or carries 641007, it is this town.
What the post office detail means for you. Veerakeralam B.O is a branch office. Speed Post and parcels are routed through the S.B. Institute sub post office (named after the Sugarcane Breeding Institute on Maruthamalai Road), which also uses 641007, with Rathinasabapathy Puram (RS Puram) as the head office. India Post’s own records list the office under a “Coimbatore South” postal taluk. That is a postal division label, not the revenue taluk that appears on land records and certificates.
Distance from Veerakeralam to Key Places
These are approximate road distances from the Veerakeralam bus stop on Thondamuthur Road, rounded to the nearest kilometre, with typical off-peak drive times. Add 10 to 15 minutes at the Vadavalli junction during school and office hours (8 to 10 am and 5 to 7 pm).
| From Veerakeralam to | Road distance | Drive time (off-peak) |
|---|---|---|
| Vadavalli junction | 3 km | 8 to 10 min |
| Perur Pateeswarar Temple | 5 km | 12 to 15 min |
| Bharathiar University | 6 km | 15 min |
| RS Puram | 6 km | 15 to 20 min |
| TNAU Botanical Garden, Lawley Road | 6 km | 15 min |
| Kovai Kondattam | 7 km | 15 to 20 min |
| Gandhipuram Town Bus Stand | 8 km | 25 min |
| Coimbatore Junction railway station | 8 km | 25 min |
| Ukkadam bus terminus | 8 km | 25 min |
| Thondamuthur | 10 km | 20 min |
| Marudhamalai Murugan Temple (foothill) | 11 km | 25 min |
| Thadagam village | 13 km | 30 min |

| Coimbatore International Airport | 19 km | 40 to 50 min |

| Siruvani / Kovai Kutralam (Sadivayal checkpost) | 33 km | 1 hr |
| Palakkad, Kerala | 52 km | 1 hr 20 min |
The short hop to RS Puram is the one most residents make daily. It runs along Thadagam Road or Maruthamalai Road depending on traffic, and both reach the city’s shopping streets in under 20 minutes outside the rush.
How to Reach Veerakeralam

By town bus. TNSTC Coimbatore’s town buses are the cheapest way in. Buses heading toward Vadavalli, Marudhamalai and Thondamuthur run along this corridor and stop at the Veerakeralam stop on Thondamuthur Road. Nearby stops worth knowing are Vadavalli, Pongaliyur, P.N. Pudur, Seeranaickenpalayam and Sugarcane Institute. Buses thin out after 9 pm, so plan a cab for late returns.
By train. Coimbatore Junction (station code CBE), about 8 km east, handles long-distance trains from Chennai, Bengaluru, Kochi and Mumbai. Coimbatore North Junction is a similar distance and useful for some Mettupalayam-side services. From either station, an auto or app cab reaches Veerakeralam in 25 to 30 minutes.
By air. Coimbatore International Airport (CJB) at Peelamedu is about 19 km away, on the opposite side of the city. The drive crosses the city through Avinashi Road and Gandhipuram, so allow 45 minutes, or up to an hour at peak time.
By road from Kerala. From Palakkad, take NH 544 through Walayar into Coimbatore, then cut west through Ukkadam or Perur. The whole trip is about 52 km. If you are combining this area with a Kerala holiday, Coimbatore airport is often the quickest gateway to Palakkad and the northern Kerala hills.
How to get from Coimbatore Junction to Veerakeralam by bus
- Walk out of Coimbatore Junction toward Town Hall, about 5 minutes on foot, or take any bus to Gandhipuram Town Bus Stand.

- Board a town bus toward Vadavalli, Maruthamalai or Thondamuthur, and check with the conductor that it stops at Veerakeralam.

- For your return, catch the same routes heading east from the opposite side of the road.

Residents near the foothill edge should know that elephants sometimes stray toward farmland on the western side after dark, especially in the dry months.
Veerakeralam Weather and Best Time to Visit
Veerakeralam shares Coimbatore’s climate: warm days, mild nights and less rain than most of south India, because the city sits in the rain shadow of the Western Ghats. The Palakkad Gap funnels a steady westerly breeze through this side of the city from June to September. That brings wind and drizzle rather than downpours. The real rains come with the northeast monsoon in October and November.
| Month | Avg high (°C) | Avg low (°C) | Rain (mm) | What it feels like |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 30.9 | 19.2 | 4 | Cool mornings, dry, ideal |

The best time to visit is November to March, when the heat is lowest and the temple mornings are cool. Go in August if Siruvani falls is your main reason; the flow is strongest then. Avoid mid-October to mid-November for outdoor day trips, and skip April afternoons.
History and the Name "Veerakeralam"
Veerakeralam sits in the old Kongu Nadu region, the western Tamil country that covers today’s Coimbatore, Tiruppur and Erode, historically known for dry farming, cattle and later cotton. Several dynasties held this land, including the Cheras, whose kingdom lay just across the Palakkad Gap.
Local tradition reads the name as “Veera” (brave) and “Keralam”, and one popular explanation links it to Chera rulers or soldiers once stationed here on the route between the Kongu country and Kerala. No inscription has been published that settles it, so treat that story as local belief rather than history. What is on record is recent: the settlement grew from about 20,000 people in 2001 to almost 24,000 in 2011 as Coimbatore spread west, and in 2011 it was merged into the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation.
Plan Your Trip
Veerakeralam is a quiet residential town with a PIN of 641007, and it makes a convenient base for Coimbatore’s western temples and foothills. Perur, Marudhamalai and Isha are all within an hour. If you want to see more of the state after this side of Coimbatore, our Tamil Nadu tour packages combine Coimbatore with Ooty, Madurai and the temple towns, and each itinerary can be tailored by a local agent.
