September sits on the seam between summer and autumn. Early in the month the valley still feels like late summer, warm afternoons, long daylight, gardens in full leaf. By the last week the air sharpens after sunset and the edges of the Chinar trees begin to turn. Rainfall is light, usually a short afternoon shower rather than a washout, so most days are clear enough for the mountains to show.

Temperature swings with altitude, so the number that matters depends on where you are standing. Srinagar on the valley floor is mild, while the high meadows of Gulmarg and Sonamarg are noticeably cooler after dark.

The practical takeaway: dress in layers. A t-shirt works at midday in Srinagar, but you will want a light jacket the same evening, and a proper woollen once you climb to Gulmarg or Sonamarg.

No, not on the valley floor. This is the single most common misunderstanding about a September trip, so it is worth being clear. September still carries summer warmth. The meadows are green, the orchards are fruiting, and Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam see no fresh snowfall this month.

The only snow you will find is old, high-altitude snow that never fully melts. At Sonamarg you can ride a pony up to the Thajiwas glacier and touch snow that has survived the summer. On a clear day you may also spot white on the far peaks around Apharwat above Gulmarg or on the Zoji La ranges, but that is distant, not underfoot.

For most travellers, yes. September gives you the good weather of summer without the summer crowds or the summer prices, plus a head start on the famous Kashmiri autumn. Families, couples and photographers all do well this month. The one group it does not suit is snow-seekers, who should wait for winter.

Here is how September stacks up against the months on either side of it.

Beyond ticking off destinations, September has its own set of experiences.

• Glide across a shikara at dawn or dusk on Dal Lake, when the water is glass-still; an early-morning ride also takes you to the floating vegetable market, which trades only around dawn.
• Stay on a Dal Lake houseboat for at least one night; it is a Kashmir experience in itself.
• Ride the Gulmarg Gondola for meadow and glacier views without a trek.
• Walk through an apple orchard in Sopore, Shopian or Pulwama; September to October is peak harvest and many farmers welcome visitors.
• Shop for pashmina, walnut wood carving, saffron and papier-mache in Srinagar’s old-city markets.

September is the doorway to the Kashmiri autumn rather than autumn itself. The apple harvest peaks now, so the orchards are at their liveliest and roadside stalls overflow with fruit. The Chinar trees, though, are only starting. Their leaves begin to turn at the very edges in the last ten days of the month, with the full fiery display arriving in mid-October and November. Saffron, Kashmir’s other autumn signature, blooms later still around Pampore, from late October. So come in September for the harvest and the first golden hints, and return in October or November if peak Chinar colour is what you are after.

If your trip is short, Srinagar alone rewards two easy days in September. The weather is at its friendliest here, mild by day and cool at night, and the city is the natural hub for day trips to Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Doodhpathri. Base yourself on a houseboat or in a Boulevard Road hotel, spend a morning on the lake and among the Mughal Gardens, and use the afternoons for the surrounding valleys. The old city, with the Jamia Masjid and the handicraft bazaars, is best explored on foot in the softer evening light.

The rule for September is layers, because a single day can swing from a warm Srinagar afternoon to a cold Gulmarg evening. Here is a tight checklist.

• T-shirts and light cottons for daytime in Srinagar.
• A light woollen or fleece and a warm jacket for evenings and for the high meadows.
• A compact rain jacket or small umbrella for the odd afternoon shower.
• Comfortable walking shoes with grip for meadows and glacier ponies.
• Sunscreen, sunglasses and a cap; the high-altitude sun is strong even when the air is cool.
• Any personal medicines, a power bank, and cash for smaller towns where card machines can be patchy.
• A postpaid mobile connection, since prepaid SIMs issued outside Jammu and Kashmir do not work in the region (buy a local prepaid SIM on arrival if needed).

A relaxed route that fits the four headline destinations into six days without rushing.

1. Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar. Settle into a houseboat, take an evening shikara on Dal Lake, and walk the Boulevard.
2. Day 2: Srinagar sightseeing. Mughal Gardens in the morning, old-city markets and Jamia Masjid in the afternoon.
3. Day 3: Sonamarg day trip. Drive about 80 km (2.5 to 3 hours) to Sonamarg, take a pony up to the Thajiwas glacier, and return to Srinagar for the night. Prefer meadows to glaciers? Swap in quiet Doodhpathri.
4. Day 4: Gulmarg day trip. Drive about 50 km (1.5 to 2 hours), ride the gondola in two phases, walk the meadows, and return to Srinagar for the night.
5. Day 5: Srinagar to Pahalgam. Drive about 95 km via Awantipora (2.5 to 3 hours), check in, then spend the afternoon at Betaab Valley (7 to 8 km) and Aru Valley (12 km), finishing along the Lidder riverbank. Local sightseeing to Betaab and Aru runs on Pahalgam taxi-union cabs from the local stand, not the cab you hired in Srinagar.
6. Day 6: Departure. Drive straight from Pahalgam to Srinagar airport (about 95 km, 3 to 3.5 hours) and reach 2 to 3 hours before departure, as the airport has several layers of security checks.

By Air

The fastest way in is to fly to Srinagar International Airport (SXR), which has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and other major cities. From the airport it is a short drive to the city and the Dal Lake hotels.

By Train

Rail access to the valley has changed. With the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link now complete, trains reach the Kashmir Valley directly rather than stopping short at Katra. The Vande Bharat Express to Srinagar, launched on the Katra-Srinagar route in June 2025 and since extended to start from Jammu Tawi, connects the plains to Srinagar through the new line, including the landmark Chenab bridge. By Road

Srinagar is connected to Jammu by NH-44, a scenic but long drive through the Banihal-Qazigund tunnel. Regular buses and shared cabs run the route, though most travellers prefer to fly and save the road time for the valley itself.
