Ships That Sail to Andaman

Two very different kinds of vessel carry the word "cruise" in Andaman, and knowing which is which saves confusion at booking.

Private inter-island catamarans (what most packages sail)

These fast, air-conditioned ships run the short hops between islands, Port Blair to Havelock and Neil in roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. They are the backbone of almost every package on this page.

Government mainland ships (the classic long passage)

For travellers who genuinely want a ship "cruise" from the mainland rather than a flight, the Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS) runs passenger ships to Port Blair from Kolkata, Chennai and Visakhapatnam.

•MV Swaraj Dweep, MV Nicobar and MV Akbar: the main DSS mainland passenger ships. The Kolkata to Port Blair route is the longest, about 70 hours across 1,302 km; Chennai and Visakhapatnam sailings are shorter. Fares are class-based (Bunk, Second Class, First Class and Deluxe Cabin) and differ for islanders and non-islanders.

Sample 4N/5D Andaman Cruise Itinerary, Day by Day

Day 1: Arrive Port Blair, Cellular Jail & Light-and-Sound

Land at Veer Savarkar International Airport and transfer to your Port Blair hotel. Spend the afternoon at the historic Cellular Jail, then stay for the evening Light-and-Sound show. Overnight in Port Blair.

Day 2: Cruise Port Blair to Havelock (Swaraj Dweep)

Morning sailing to Havelock aboard Makruzz or Nautika, about 1.5 to 2 hours. Check in, then head to Radhanagar Beach for sunset. Overnight on Havelock.

Day 3: Havelock, Elephant Beach & water sports

Speedboat across to Elephant Beach for snorkelling and sea-walking over the reef and coral. Free evening for the beach or the island cafes. Overnight on Havelock.

Day 4: Cruise Havelock to Neil (Shaheed Dweep) to Port Blair

Sail to Neil Island for Bharatpur and Laxmanpur beaches and the Natural Bridge. Afternoon cruise back to Port Blair. Overnight in Port Blair.

Day 5: Ross Island / North Bay, then departure

Optional morning harbour cruise to Ross Island or North Bay (Coral Island) before your airport transfer and onward flight.

Included: inter-island cruise and ferry tickets, hotel stays, airport and jetty transfers, daywise sightseeing, and permits where applicable.

Not included: flights to and from Port Blair, water-sports and activity fees, personal expenses, meals not listed, and travel insurance.

Things to Do on an Andaman Cruise
