Founded by King Bhanu Narasingh Dev of the Ganga Dynasty, Narendra Pokhari was named after his mentor Nakhaposi Narendra Mahapatra. A small temple called Chandana Mandapa is situated in the middle of the tank and connected to the southern bank via a bridge. The famous Chandana Yatra takes place every year at Narendra Pokhari, where all deities are brought out of their temples, applied Chandana, and washed with the holy water of this tank. As the tank is considered sacred, people take a holy bath in one of the sixteen ghats this tank covers.

It is from here the temple got its name Laukanatha, later renamed Lokanath Temple.
