Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lokanath Temple’s unique characteristic is that the Shiva linga is always immersed in water, justifying that Goddess Ganga flows through its top as a stream. One can only witness the lingam before Shivratri, on Pankhodar Ekadasi, when the water is drawn out from the lingam. As per beliefs Sri Rama, on his way to Lanka, installed a Lauka (pumpkin) as a replica of Shiva linga and prayed to Lord Shiva to fulfill his wish.
