Best Tourist Places To Explore In Jaffna

1. Jaffna Fort

What’s Special: Ancient architecture

Timings: 7:30 am to 5:30 pm

Transportation Option: Bus, taxi

Constructed by the Portuguese between 1618 and 1625, Jaffna Fort is the second-largest fort in Sri Lanka. Under the Portuguese invasion, the fort was known as the ‘Fortress of Our Lady of Miracles of Jafanapatão.’ With star-shaped architecture, the fort used to have numerous sections like the Queen’s house, the Hangman’s Tower, the Kruys Church, a prison, a hospital, the rampart, and the moat, some of which are still there. Although many alterations have been made to the fort, it hasn’t lost its charm. Being one of the top tourist spots to visit, it should be a part of your Jaffna Tour Packages.

2. Casuarina Beach

What’s Special: Scenic views, watersports

Timings: 7 am to 6 pm

Transportation Option: Taxi

The stunning crystal clear beach in Northern Peninsula, Casuarina Beach, gets its name from the numerous Casuarina trees surrounding its shores. One of Jaffna district’s most popular beaches, it is also called Cashoorina and Casoorina. The water activities practiced on the beach include swimming, surfing, jet skiing, and parasailing. One can witness the Karainagar Lighthouse towards the east. It is the best place to chill in Jaffna Holiday Packages.

3. Nallur Kandaswamy Temple

What’s Special: Religious significance

Timings: 5 am to 7 pm

Transportation Option: Taxi, bus

Dedicated to Lord Murugan, the God of war, love, and beauty, Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is a Hindu temple in Jaffna. Flaunting Dravidian architecture, the shrines of other deities also reside inside the temple. The temple has been broken down and reconstructed four times, and the present location of the temple is not the same as the original. Nallur festival, a 25-day celebration, is conducted in the temple during August.

4. Jaffna Library

What’s Special: Historical significance

Timings: 9 am to 7 pm

Transportation Option: Bus, taxi

Built in 1933, Jaffna Library has a turbulent history attached to it. During the Sri Lankan Civil War of 1981, the library was burnt, leading to the destruction of almost 97,000 books and manuscripts. The ruination was to such an extent that many ancient Tamil and Sinhala books were never recovered. However, the library got restored in 2001 with the entrance statue of Goddess Saraswati, the Hindu deity of knowledge. Curious heads can customize their Jaffna Trip Packages to visit the library and research Sri Lankan culture, history, and folklore.

Timings: 6:30 am to 5:30 pm (ferry timings)
