18 Best Places To Visit In Khajjiar In 2026

The best places to visit in Khajjiar sit inside a single saucer-shaped meadow at about 1,920 metres, ringed by deodar cedar and looking straight out at the snow line of the Dhauladhar. People call it the Mini Switzerland of India for a reason. Khajjiar Lake, Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, the 12th-century Khajji Nag Temple and an 85-foot Shiva statue are all within a short walk or drive of that one grassy plateau, and a clutch of Dalhousie and Chamba day trips sit within an hour of it. This guide ranks all 18, tells you what each is actually worth, and lays out the best time to go, the things to do, and how to reach Khajjiar from Delhi, Chandigarh or Pathankot.

Key Takeaways

  • Khajjiar is a grassy plateau in Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh, at roughly 1,920 m. Go for the meadow, the lake and the Dhauladhar views.
  • Best time: December to February for snow, and April to June for green-meadow weather. Skip the July to mid-September monsoon for the drive.
  • Fly to Delhi or Chandigarh, ride to Pathankot, then drive the last 90-odd km through Dalhousie. The nearest airport is Kangra (Gaggal).
  • Top things to do: horse rides, zorbing and paragliding all run off the meadow itself, and boating on Khajjiar Lake.
  • How long: Give Khajjiar half a day and pair it with Dalhousie and Chamba for a comfortable two to three day trip.

Khajjiar at a Glance

Khajjiar at a Glance

Khajjiar is not a town so much as a meadow with a temple, a lake and a golf course wrapped around it. It belongs to Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh, sits between Dalhousie and the Kalatop forest, and earns the Mini Switzerland tag from the way the flat green saucer meets a wall of cedar and snow. Here is the quick version before the full list.

Start with the core cluster. These eleven sit in or right beside the Khajjiar meadow, so you can cover most of them on foot or with a short taxi hop.

01

Khajjiar Lake

This is the reason the buses pull in. A small natural lake sits at the low point of the meadow at about 1,920 m, fringed by deodar, with a slab of floating grass drifting on its surface that guides love to point out. On a clear morning you can see the snow on Mount Kailash from the bank.

The lake edge is where the action is: horse handlers, zorbing balls on the slope, and a paragliding launch when conditions allow. It is flat, open and easy for kids and older travellers, which is why families end up spending half their Khajjiar time right here.

Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary

Spread over roughly 30.69 sq km between Dalhousie and Khajjiar, Kalatop is the forest half of a Khajjiar trip. The cover is blue pine, green oak and rhododendron, and the resident list runs to Himalayan black marten, goral, langur, jackal, the odd bear and, rarely, a leopard.

You come here to walk. A gentle forest trail runs to the Kalatop rest house, and the light through the pines in the late afternoon is the payoff. Carry your ID for the forest checkpoint and keep to the marked path.

Khajji Nag Temple

The village takes its name from this 12th-century temple to the Nag Devta, the lord of serpents, on the edge of the lake. The woodwork is the draw: detailed carvings in a mixed Hindu and later architectural style, with images of the Pandavas and Kauravas inside and idols of Shiva and Hidimba.

It is a two-minute detour from the lake, so there is no reason to skip it. It stays an active place of worship, so dress modestly and take your shoes off at the entrance.

Golden Devi Temple

A quieter counterpoint to Khajji Nag, the Golden Devi Temple stands out for its golden dome and Himachali wood carving, set against the meadow and the Dhauladhar behind it. It is dedicated to the goddess, and locals come for what they hold to be its healing blessings.

Fewer tour groups make it here, so it is a good stop if you want ten quiet minutes away from the lake crowd.

Best for Quiet worship, golden-dome architecture
Timings Daylight hours

Best season Year-round
05

Lord Shiva Statue

At 85 feet, this is one of the tallest statues in Himachal, set inside the Jagdambe Mata temple complex with a bronze-polished finish that catches the light from a distance. Local belief holds that a wish made here gets fulfilled, so it draws a steady stream of visitors.

It photographs well against the hills, and the complex is an easy add-on to a Khajjiar and Dalhousie loop.

Quick facts Lord Shiva Statue
Best for The 85-ft idol, temple complex
Timings 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Entry Free
Best season May to December
06

Panch Pandav Tree

About a kilometre from the lake on the road toward Dalhousie stands an old deodar with six shoots rising from one trunk. Locals read the five larger shoots as the five Pandavas and the sixth as Draupadi, and there is a larger ‘mother tree’ with many similar shoots close by.

It is a short, flat walk from the rest house, and a nice bit of local legend to break up the drive.

Quick facts Panch Pandav Tree
Best for Local legend, a short forest walk
Timings Open all day
Distance from lake About 1 km toward Dalhousie
Best season Year-round
07

Nine-Hole Golf Course

Khajjiar has something almost no other Himachal hill stop can claim: a nine-hole golf course laid out on the meadow itself, with the cedar wall and snow peaks as your backdrop. You do not need to be a golfer to enjoy the green, and the setting alone is worth the walk over.

This is one of our list’s genuine one-of-a-kind entries, so give it a look even if you only watch a round.

Quick facts Nine-Hole Golf Course
Best for A round of golf, open-meadow views
Timings Daylight hours
Entry Course/green fees apply on the spot
Best season May to December
08

Kailash Villages

Ringing the Khajjiar ground are small villages such as Rota and Ladi, known for apple orchards, snow-capped views and homestays where you eat proper Chamba-style Himachali food. Come apple season, the orchards are the reason to linger.

Staying a night in one of these villages is the closest you get to slow, local Khajjiar rather than the day-tripper version.

Quick facts Kailash Villages
Best for Apple orchards, homestays, mountain views
Timings Daylight hours
Stay Village homestays available
Best season Mid-May to mid-October
09

Dhauladhar Range viewpoint

The snow wall you keep seeing behind every Khajjiar photo is the Dhauladhar. From the meadow’s edge you get a clean line of sight to the range, and several treks into Kalatop and beyond start from here.

Late afternoon light on the snow is the shot everyone wants. If you trek, go with a local guide and check the weather first.

Quick facts Dhauladhar Range viewpoint
Best for Snow-line views, trek starting point
Timings All day
Entry Free
Best season April to November
10

Tibetan Handicrafts Centre

For souvenirs with some substance, the Tibetan Handicrafts Centre sells wall hangings, carpets, shawls and small antiques, and the food stalls around it do a decent plate of spicy noodles and momos.

It is an easy stop before you head out, and a better bet than the roadside trinket sellers.

Quick facts Tibetan Handicrafts Centre
Best for Carpets, shawls, momos
Timings 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Entry Free
Best season April to July
11

HP State Handicrafts Centre

The state-run handicrafts centre is the other place to buy well, with handmade carpets, jewellery, wall hangings, furniture, rugs and metalware that reflect local Himachal craft rather than mass-market imports.

Prices are fixed and fair, which makes it the low-stress option if you are not up for bargaining.

Best for Metalware, rugs, jewellery, souvenirs
Timings 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM

Things to Do and Adventure Activities in Khajjiar

Things to Do and Adventure Activities in Khajjiar

Khajjiar is not just a place to look at, it is a place to do things on. Almost everything runs off the meadow and the lake, within a few hundred metres of where the buses park, so you can string together a whole afternoon of activity without moving far. Rates are settled on the spot, so agree the price before you start.

On the meadow

  • Horse riding. Handlers run rides across and around the meadow. It is the classic Khajjiar photo and the easiest activity for kids.
  • Zorbing. Strap into a giant clear ball and roll down the gentle meadow slope. Short, silly and popular with families.
  • Paragliding. When the wind and the season cooperate, tandem paragliding launches off the higher ground for a short glide over the green. Availability is weather-dependent, so ask on the day.

On and around the lake

  • Boating. Small-boat rides on Khajjiar Lake are calm and quick, good for a break between walks.
  • The Khajjiar trek. A longer route runs roughly 14 km through the Kalatop forest for walkers who want more than a stroll. Go with a guide and start early.
  • Camping, nature walks and photography. The whole plateau is a slow-walk landscape. Camping, nature walks and photography around the meadow and Dhauladhar viewpoints fill the quieter hours, and the sunrise light off the snow is the reason to be up early.

Travellers consistently report that the best of Khajjiar is the unhurried version: one activity, a long walk, and a lot of sitting on the grass. If you want the adventure day proper, our writers found the meadow at its liveliest between April and June before the monsoon, and again once the winter snow firms up the ground in December.

Day Trips and Places Near Khajjiar

Day Trips and Places Near Khajjiar

Several of Khajjiar’s most-listed sights are actually short hops away in Dalhousie and Chamba. Keeping them separate makes planning easier: do the meadow itself in half a day, then use the rest of your two or three days on these. The table gives the distances. The notes tell you which are worth the drive.

Place Where Distance from Khajjiar Best for
Dainkund Peak Above Dalhousie About 20 km Highest local peak, camping
Panchpula Near Dalhousie About 23 km Waterfalls, pine walks
Panjpulla Near Dalhousie About 23 km Ajit Singh memorial, streams
Subhash Baoli Dalhousie About 23 km Pine-shaded spring, views
Ganji Pahadi Bakrota, Dalhousie About 24 km Short uphill trek
Church of Scotland Chamba About 20 km 1905 stone church, history
Dal Lake Dharamshala About 120 km Boating, day out (long)

Dainkund Peak

The highest point around Dalhousie, Dainkund gives you snow peaks on a clear day, green meadows in summer and a white sheet in winter. The trek starts a few kilometres past Lakkar Mandi and runs about three km on foot to the top. It doubles as a camping spot for those who want a night out.

Panchpula and Panjpulla

These two neighbouring spots near Dalhousie are all pine, deodar and running water. Panchpula is the waterfall-and-stream side, good for a nature walk. Panjpulla carries a memorial to freedom fighter Sardar Ajit Singh among the streams. Both are an easy add-on if you are already heading toward Dalhousie town.

Subhash Baoli and Ganji Pahadi

Subhash Baoli, named for Subhash Chandra Bose, is a spring set among tall pines about a kilometre from Dalhousie with long Himalayan views, open through the day. Ganji Pahadi, the ‘bald mountain’ at Bakrota, is a moderate five-km uphill walk of about an hour with scenery the whole way. Both suit a slow half-day out of Khajjiar.

Church of Scotland and Dal Lake

In Chamba, the Church of Scotland is a dressed-stone church whose foundation was laid in 1899 and finished in 1905, a quiet bit of colonial history about 20 km from Khajjiar. Dal Lake near Dharamshala, not to be confused with Kashmir’s, is a small forest-ringed lake good for boating, but at roughly 120 km it is a full day and only worth it if you are already routing through Dharamshala.

Best Time to Visit Khajjiar

Best Time to Visit Khajjiar

Khajjiar works in two very different ways depending on the month. Winter is for snow, spring and early summer are for the green meadow, and the monsoon is best avoided for the mountain drive. Here is the season-by-season read.

Season Months Weather Good for
Winter Dec-Feb Cold, snowfall, the meadow whitens Snow, photos; carry heavy woollens
Spring Mar-Apr Cool, clear, meadow greening Comfortable sightseeing, fewer crowds
Summer May-Jun Mild days, cool nights The green Mini-Switzerland look, activities
Monsoon Jul-mid Sep Wet, landslide risk on ghat roads Avoid for the drive; lush but risky
Autumn mid Sep-Nov Clear, crisp, thinning crowds Clean Dhauladhar views, trekking

For most travellers the sweet spots are April to June for green-meadow weather and December to February for snow. If you are coming specifically to see Khajjiar under snow, the January window is the safest bet, but check the road status through Dalhousie before you set out.

How to Reach Khajjiar

How to Reach Khajjiar

Khajjiar has no airport or railway of its own, so every route ends with a road leg through Dalhousie or Chamba. The table sums up the three ways in. The steps below are the simplest door-to-door plan from Delhi.

Mode Nearest hub Approx. distance to Khajjiar Notes
By air Kangra (Gaggal) Airport About 90-135 km  [EDIT: source says ~120-135 km (govt 130, Yatra 123); tighten floor from 90 (https://hpchamba.nic.in/tourist-place/khajjiar/)] Then taxi via Dalhousie/Chamba
By train Pathankot (Punjab) About 90-100 km Nurpur Road is a smaller nearby halt
By road Dalhousie / Chamba 22-24 km from Dalhousie Taxi or HRTC bus; scenic ghat road

Step by step from Delhi

  1. Take an overnight train or bus from Delhi to Pathankot, or fly into Kangra (Gaggal) if you want to save time.
  2. From Pathankot, hire a taxi or catch an HRTC bus toward Dalhousie. The road climbs steadily and takes roughly three to four hours.
  3. From Dalhousie, it is a short 22 to 24 km drive to Khajjiar through the Kalatop forest, about 45 minutes to an hour.
  4. Drivers coming under their own steam usually route Delhi to Chandigarh to Pathankot to Dalhousie to Khajjiar, a long day of roughly 10 hours of driving in total. Break it in Dalhousie rather than pushing straight through.

Where to Stay and Plan Your Trip

Where to Stay and Plan Your Trip

Khajjiar itself has a handful of meadow-side hotels and the Kailash-village homestays, but most people base in Dalhousie, 22 to 24 km away, where the choice of stays and food is wider, and day-trip in. That also makes it easy to fold Chamba and the Dalhousie sights into the same trip.

If you would rather have the drives, permits and stays handled end to end, our Dharamshala, McLeodGanj, Khajjiar and Dalhousie tour packages the whole Chamba circuit into one booking, and the wider range of Himachal tour packages covers everything from Shimla to Spiti. For maps, seasons and the rest of the state, the Himachal tourism guide is the place to start.

Plan Your Khajjiar Trip

Khajjiar rewards a slow visit more than a rushed one. Give the meadow and lake a proper half day, save a couple of days for Dalhousie and Chamba, and time it for the April-to-June green or the deep-winter snow. Browse Himachal tour packages when you are ready to turn this list into a trip.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Places to Visit in Khajjiar

Khajjiar is famous for its saucer-shaped green meadow ringed by deodar cedar, with Khajjiar Lake at its centre and the snow-capped Dhauladhar behind it. That mix of flat grassland, forest and snow line is why it is called the Mini Switzerland of India. The meadow, the 12th-century Khajji Nag Temple, an 85-foot Shiva statue and a rare nine-hole golf course are its best-known sights.

The name comes from the landscape: a wide, flat green plateau at about 1,920 m, enclosed by cedar forest and looking out at snow peaks, which reminded visitors of Swiss meadow valleys. Khajjiar has even been marked as one of a set of 'mini Switzerlands' worldwide. Locals also call it the Gulmarg of Himachal for the same open-meadow-and-snow reason.

The most popular things to do in Khajjiar are horse riding and zorbing on the meadow, boating on Khajjiar Lake, and weather-permitting paragliding above it. Beyond that, walk the Kalatop forest trail, do the roughly 14 km Khajjiar trek, visit the Khajji Nag and Golden Devi temples, and simply picnic on the grass. Rates for rides are settled on the spot, so agree the price first.

The best time is April to June for the green meadow and mild weather, and December to February if you want to see Khajjiar under snow. Spring and autumn give you clear Dhauladhar views with fewer crowds. Avoid the July to mid-September monsoon, when the ghat roads through Dalhousie can be slow or blocked by landslides.

Yes. Khajjiar gets regular snowfall in the deep winter months, roughly December to February, when the meadow whitens over and the surrounding forest fills with snow. January is usually the most reliable window for snow. Carry heavy woollens, and always check the road status through Dalhousie before travelling, as fresh snow can close the last stretch.

Khajjiar itself takes only half a day to a full day, since the meadow, lake and temples are close together. To make the trip worthwhile, give it two to three days combined with Dalhousie and Chamba, which puts Dainkund Peak, the Panchpula waterfalls, Subhash Baoli and the Church of Scotland comfortably within reach on the same trip.

Take an overnight train or bus from Delhi to Pathankot, or fly into Kangra (Gaggal) Airport. From Pathankot, drive or bus about 90 to 100 km up to Dalhousie, then continue the short 22 to 24 km to Khajjiar through the Kalatop forest. By car the full Delhi to Khajjiar run via Chandigarh and Pathankot is roughly 10 hours of driving, best broken with a night in Dalhousie.

Khajjiar sits about 22 to 24 km from Dalhousie, a scenic 45-minute to one-hour drive through the Kalatop forest, and roughly 20 km from Chamba town. Both are easy day connections by taxi or local HRTC bus, which is why most travellers base in Dalhousie and visit Khajjiar as a day trip.

For the landscape, yes. Few places in India give you a flat green meadow, a forest lake and a snow-capped range in one small area you can walk across. It is best treated as a relaxed half-day of walking, riding and picnicking rather than a packed sightseeing checklist, and it pairs naturally with Dalhousie and Chamba to fill a longer trip.

Khajjiar has a small number of meadow-side hotels and resorts plus homestays in the nearby Kailash villages, where you get home-cooked Chamba food. The choice is limited, so many travellers stay in Dalhousie, 22 to 24 km away, where hotels and restaurants are more plentiful, and visit Khajjiar for the day. Book ahead for the winter snow and summer peak seasons.
