Places to Visit in Shimla: Add to Your Bucket List
There are more than 50 places to visit in Shimla, and you can see the best of them in two to three days. Shimla pairs colonial-era architecture with deodar forests, ridge-top viewpoints and quick snow-point day trips, which is why it stays the most-visited hill station in North India. This guide ranks 53 Shimla tourist places, tells you roughly how long to spend at each, and adds the practical bits most lists skip: which months bring snow, how to reach the city, and ready-made 1, 2 and 3-day routes. Skim the table first, then read the entries for the places that fit your trip.
Quick takeaways
- Plan 2-3 full days; a single day only covers the Ridge, Mall Road, Jakhoo and one snow point.
- Add short day trips to Kufri, Naldehra, Chail, Tattapani or Narkanda if you have extra time.
- Time it for December to February (snow) or March to June (pleasant weather); skip July-August peak monsoon for outdoor plans.
- Budget light: free draws like the Ridge, Mall Road, Christ Church, temples and viewpoints far outnumber the paid museums and the Jakhu ropeway.
- Reach via Chandigarh (113 km) or the Kalka-Shimla toy train; Shimla’s own airport at Jubbarhatti (23 km) has only limited flights.

- Summer Hills
A wooded suburb about 5 km west of the Ridge, on the old Shimla-Kalka rail line. Mahatma Gandhi once stayed here at Georgian House, and the shaded lanes under deodar and pine still make one of the quietest walks in the city. A good first stop before the Mall crowds build.
- Indian Institute of Advanced Studies
Better known as the old Viceregal Lodge, this is where the 1945 Shimla Conference was held. Today it is a research institute, but guided tours run through the wood-panelled halls and the Jacobean stone facade and clipped lawns are the real draw. Photography is limited inside.
- Annandale
A flat green oval ringed by forest, once the social ground of British Shimla. It now sits inside an army cantonment and holds a small army museum and a golf course. You usually need to check access at the gate, but the walk in through cedar is worth it.
- Jakhoo Hill & Temple
At 2,455 m this is one of Shimla’s highest points, crowned by a 33 m Hanuman statue visible across the city. The climb from the Ridge takes 30-40 minutes on foot, or take the ropeway. Watch your snacks near the top, the resident monkeys are quick.
- The Ridge & Scandal Point
The open, pedestrian heart of Shimla, joined to Scandal Point where the roads meet. Christ Church stands at one end and the Gaiety theatre nearby. It is the best free spot in town for a slow evening walk with mountain views on every side.
- Shimla State Museum
A colonial-era mansion holding Pahari miniature paintings, temple carvings, coins and textiles from across Himachal. It is a calm, uncrowded hour and a good rainy-day option. Closed on Mondays and public holidays, so plan around that.
- Naldehra & Shaily Peak
About 22 km out, Naldehra has one of India’s oldest golf courses laid across a forested ridge, with Shaily Peak rising behind for a short hike. Horse rides and quiet deodar trails make it an easy half-day escape from the city centre.
- Chadwick Falls
A seasonal waterfall roughly 7 km from the Ridge that plunges around 100 m in full flow. It is at its best just after the monsoon, from August to October; in dry months it thins to a trickle, so time this one to the rains.
- Mall Road
Shimla’s famous shopping street, closed to traffic and lined with colonial buildings, bookshops, bakeries and cafes. Give it an unhurried couple of hours in the evening. Try the local bakeries near Scandal Point and browse Himachali shawls and wood crafts.
- Johnnie’s Wax Museum
A small, cheerful wax museum on the Mall with figures of film stars, cricketers and world leaders. It takes under an hour and works well as a light stop with kids between the Ridge and Lakkar Bazaar.
- Christ Church
A neo-Gothic church from 1857, its yellow facade and stained glass among the most photographed sights in Shimla. It sits right on the Ridge, so pair it with an evening walk. Step inside for the Victorian interiors when a service is not on.
- Himalayan Bird Park
A compact aviary near the Viceregal Lodge with Himalayan monal, pheasants and peafowl in landscaped enclosures. It is a short, easy visit and a nice add-on for families already headed to the Lodge.
- Tara Devi Temple
A hilltop temple to the goddess Tara at about 1,900 m, roughly 11 km from the city. The last stretch is a forest walk that opens onto wide valley views. Quieter than Jakhoo and worth the short detour for the panorama.
- Kufri
The best-known day trip, about 16 km out at 2,720 m. In winter it is Shimla’s main snow point, with tubing, skiing and horse rides; in summer the meadows and the Himalayan Nature Park take over. Go early, the road and parking fill fast.
- Chail
A former princely retreat about 45 km from Shimla, built by the Maharaja of Patiala. Its palace (now a heritage hotel), the world’s highest cricket ground and thick deodar forest make it a calmer, greener alternative to Kufri.
- Lakkar Bazaar
A stepped lane off the Ridge famous for Himachali wood craft, from walking sticks to toys and souvenirs. It takes an hour to browse and is the place to pick up handmade gifts. The snack stalls here are a local favourite.
- Green Valley
A roadside viewpoint on the Kufri route where the valley opens up under pine. It is a quick photo stop rather than a destination, best in clear morning light before the mist rolls in.
- Viceregal Lodge
The grand estate of the former British Viceroy, set in terraced gardens with a rose lawn and sweeping views. Even if you skip the interior tour, the grounds and the Elizabethan-style stone facade reward an unhurried visit. Same complex as the Institute above, seen for its architecture.
- Kiala Forest
A little-visited pine and deodar patch near Kufri, good for a short forest walk and a break from the crowds. Come for the quiet and the birdsong rather than any single sight.
- Kuthar Fort
An old fort near Kuthar village, about 40 km out, with parts dating back centuries and a small temple in its grounds. It suits travellers who like offbeat history and don’t mind a rough approach road.
- Hawa Ghar
A simple viewing gazebo on a ridge above the city, literally an air house, built to catch the breeze and the view. A 30-minute stop that rewards you with a clean sweep of the surrounding hills.
- Prospect Hill
A forested hill topped by the Kamna Devi temple, reached by a short climb through cedar. It gives you one of the widest views over Shimla and the ranges beyond, and stays far quieter than Jakhoo.
- Jakhu Ropeway
The cable car that carries you up to the Jakhoo Hanuman temple in a few minutes, saving the steep climb. The ride itself is the draw, with the giant statue growing in front of you and the city falling away below.
- Pabbar Valley
A remote river valley east of Shimla, apple country threaded by the Pabbar with trout streams and villages like Rohru and Chirgaon. This is a full-day, offbeat run for travellers who want Himachal without the crowds.
- Tattapani
About 50 km down towards the Sutlej, Tattapani is known for its riverside sulphur hot springs, now largely channelled into resort baths. Pair the soak with river-crossing and short treks. The drive down the valley is half the pleasure.
- The Glen (Reserve Forest)
A wooded hollow below the town, once called Annandale’s little sister, laid out for picnics under tall deodar. It is an easy walk or short drive and a good spot to sit with a packed lunch away from the Mall.
- Baba Bhalku Railway Museum
A small museum by the railway station honouring Baba Bhalku, the local whose instinct helped engineers align the Kalka-Shimla line. Model engines and old photographs tell the story of the UNESCO-listed toy train in under an hour.
- Narkanda
About 60 km out at 2,700 m, Narkanda is apple orchards, cedar slopes and winter skiing, with the short climb to Hatu Peak and its wooden temple for the best views. A full day, or an overnight if you want the dawn from the peak.
- Rani Jhansi Park
A tidy little garden on the Mall named for Rani Lakshmibai, with benches, flowerbeds and a children’s play area. A quick, pleasant pause rather than a stop in its own right.
- Army Heritage Museum
A well-kept museum of the Indian Army’s Himalayan campaigns, with uniforms, weapons and battle displays near Annandale. Allow an hour; it is more engaging than most visitors expect.
- Kali Bari Temple
A red-and-white temple to Kali built in the Bengali style, tucked just below the Ridge. It draws a steady stream of local worshippers and takes only a few minutes, easily slotted into a Mall Road walk.
- Water Catchment Sanctuary
A protected deodar reserve that supplies the city’s water, home to leopard, goral and rich birdlife. Entry is regulated and best arranged in advance, but the untouched forest is a rare sight this close to a hill town.
- Gaiety Heritage Complex
The restored Victorian theatre complex on the Mall, still staging plays and now open for heritage tours of its gilded auditorium. A good look at the cultural life of colonial Shimla, and a warm indoor hour when the weather turns.
- Gorton Castle
A heavy grey stone building of the colonial administration, its turrets and arches a fine example of Shimla’s public architecture. It houses government offices, so most visitors admire it from outside on the way past.
- Bantony Castle
A once-grand mansion on the Mall, long associated with the region’s colonial history and now under restoration. Worth a pause for the facade and the story, though interior access is limited.
- Mashobra
About 13 km from the city, Mashobra is orchards, forest walks and quiet resorts, with the presidential retreat nearby. It trades sights for slow mornings, a good base if you want green and calm over a checklist.
- Theog
A small town on the Hindustan-Tibet road, about 30 km out, ringed by apple orchards and pine. Most travellers pass through en route to Narkanda, but the market and the valley views make a pleasant short stop.
- Fagu
At around 2,500 m on the Kufri road, Fagu is a green shoulder of valley that turns white in winter. It is a fine viewpoint and a quieter snow spot than Kufri when the season is on.
- Majathal Sanctuary
A little-known sanctuary of open grassland and forest towards the Sutlej, home to goral, ghoral and a good list of birds. It is a half-day for wildlife-minded travellers willing to go off the tourist track.
- Sankat Mochan Temple
A hilltop Hanuman temple reached by a forest path, giving fine views over the ridges around Shimla. It is calmer than Jakhoo and a favourite short walk for those who want a temple with a view.
- Vaishno Devi Temple, Shimla
A replica of the famous Katra shrine, set on a wooded slope on the city’s edge. It draws local devotees and offers a quiet, uncrowded darshan without the long climb of the original.
- Barog
A small hill town about 60 km down the line, best known for its toy-train station and the long Barog tunnel. Its cool, orchard-fringed quiet makes it a restful overnight or a lunch halt on the way up.
- Kamna Devi Temple
A forested peak crowned by the Kamna Devi temple, above Prospect Hill, reached by a short climb through cedar. The reward is a wide, open view of the valley and, on a clear day, the snow line beyond.
- Rothney Castle
A historic private estate on Jakhoo’s slopes, once home to the naturalist A.O. Hume, founder of the Indian National Congress. It is privately held, so visitors take in the Gothic facade and the story from the gate.
- Hip Hip Hurray Amusement Park
A small amusement park with rides and games aimed at families, a change of pace from Shimla’s heritage and hills. Give it a couple of hours if you are travelling with young children.
- Shoghi
A gateway town about 13 km before Shimla, wrapped in pine and dotted with old temples like Kali and Hanuman. Many travellers stay here for quieter nights and cheaper rooms, then drive in for the day.
- Jonang Monastery
A Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Jonang tradition, its prayer hall bright with murals and thangkas. A peaceful, unhurried stop and a reminder of Himachal’s living Buddhist community.
- Shimla Heritage Museum
A modest local museum tracing Shimla’s growth from a scatter of hamlets to the summer capital of British India, through photographs and everyday objects. A quick, worthwhile stop for context on the city.
- Solan
About 45 km from Shimla, Solan is called the mushroom city for its farms and is home to one of Asia’s oldest breweries. Add the hilltop Shoolini temple and Mohan Shakti heritage park to fill a relaxed half-day.
- St. Michael’s Cathedral
A stone Catholic cathedral near the Ridge, second oldest church in Shimla, with tall arched windows and a calm interior. A brief but atmospheric stop, especially around evening service.
- Koti
A green river valley about 15 km out on the Chail road, popular for riverside resorts, short treks and a splash in the Ashwini stream. An easy nature break when you want water and forest close to the city.
- Giri Ganga
A forest trek to the Giri Ganga stream and a small shrine near Kufri-Fagu, through thick deodar and meadow. Set aside a full day and go with a guide; the walk, not a single sight, is the point.
- Nawar Valley
A remote apple-growing valley in Shimla’s far reaches, all terraced orchards, wooden villages and near-empty roads. This is deep-Himachal territory for travellers who have seen the classics and want the quiet beyond.

Best Time To Visit Shimla (And When It Snows)

Shimla is a year-round hill station, but what you get changes sharply by season. Here is the short version, month by month.
| Season | Months | Weather | Good for |
| Summer | Apr-Jun | 15-25 C, pleasant | Sightseeing, escaping the plains’ heat (peak season) |
| Monsoon | Jul-mid Sep | Wet, 15-20 C, landslide risk | Green views, low crowds; skip if you want outdoor plans |
| Autumn | mid Sep-Nov | Clear, 10-20 C | Best clarity, apple harvest, easy travel |
| Winter | Dec-Feb | -2 to 10 C, snow likely | Snowfall at Kufri, Narkanda, Fagu; New Year crowds |
For snow, aim for late December through February, when Kufri, Narkanda, Fagu and sometimes the Ridge itself turn white. Snowfall is never guaranteed on a fixed date, so keep a day of buffer if snow is the whole point of your trip. December is the busiest and priciest window; if you specifically want the festive-season version of the city, read our companion guide to the best places to visit in Shimla in December.
What to pack
- Winter (Dec-Feb): heavy jacket, thermals, gloves, cap, and shoes with grip for icy paths.
- Summer (Apr-Jun): light layers plus one warm fleece for cool evenings, sunscreen and a hat.
- Monsoon (Jul-Sep): waterproof jacket, quick-dry clothes and sturdy footwear for slippery trails.
How To Reach Shimla

Shimla sits about 350 km from Delhi and 113 km from Chandigarh, and you can reach it by air, rail or road. Most travellers fly or train to Chandigarh, then drive up.
| Mode | Details | Time from Chandigarh |
| By air | Shimla (Jubbarhatti) airport, 23 km, limited flights. Chandigarh (113 km) is the main, well-connected airport. | 3-4 hrs by road from Chandigarh |
| By train | The UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla toy train (96 km, ~5-6 hrs) from Kalka, which connects to Delhi/Chandigarh by broad gauge. | 5-6 hrs on the toy train from Kalka |
| By road | NH5 via Chandigarh-Solan; HRTC and Volvo buses run from Delhi (~10 hrs) and Chandigarh (~3.5 hrs); taxis and self-drive both easy. | ~3.5 hrs by car |
The toy train is a sight in itself, winding through 100-plus tunnels and pine forest, but it is slow; book the seat well ahead in peak season. For the fastest arrival, fly to Chandigarh and drive up the same day.
Suggested Shimla Itineraries: 1 Day, 2 Days & 3 Days

1 Day in Shimla
Start on the Ridge and Scandal Point, step into Christ Church, then walk down Mall Road for breakfast and shopping. Climb or take the ropeway to Jakhoo Temple for the midday view, and if time allows drive out to Kufri for the afternoon. One day only skims the surface, but it hits the icons.
2 Days in Shimla
Day 1: the city core, Ridge, Christ Church, Mall Road, Lakkar Bazaar, the State Museum and Jakhoo Hill. Day 2: a day trip to Kufri and Naldehra, or to Chail if you prefer palaces and forest over snow points. This is the most popular length and covers Shimla comfortably.
3 Days in Shimla
Add a third day for the wider circuit: drive out to Narkanda for the apple belt and Hatu Peak, or down to Tattapani for the hot springs and river. Three days lets you slow down, add an offbeat valley, and still keep an evening free on the Mall. For a fully planned version, our Shimla holiday packages cover 2 to 5-day routes with stays and transfers sorted.
Planning Your Shimla Trip
Shimla rewards a relaxed pace more than a rushed checklist. Pick a handful of places from the list above that match your season and your days, keep the Ridge and Mall Road for the evenings, and leave room for one snow point or offbeat valley. When you are ready to turn this into a real trip, browse our Shimla tour packages or read the wider Shimla travel guide for stays, food and more things to do.
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About Places To Visit In Shimla
Two to three days is the sweet spot. One day only covers the Ridge, Mall Road, Jakhoo and a single snow point like Kufri. Two days lets you add Naldehra or Chail, and three days opens up Narkanda, Tattapani or an offbeat valley. If you want to combine Shimla with Manali or Kasol, plan five to six days.
In one day, walk the Ridge and Scandal Point, visit Christ Church, browse Mall Road and Lakkar Bazaar, and go up to Jakhoo Temple for the view. If you start early, add a half-day run to Kufri for snow in winter or the Himalayan Nature Park in summer. It is a full but doable day.
Day 1: the city core (Ridge, Christ Church, Mall Road, State Museum, Jakhoo). Day 2: a day trip to Kufri and Naldehra, or to Chail. Day 3: head further out to Narkanda for the apple belt and Hatu Peak, or to Tattapani for the hot springs. This spread covers the icons and one offbeat corner.
Snowfall usually arrives between late December and February, with January the most reliable month. Kufri, Narkanda and Fagu see it first and hold it longest; the Ridge itself gets occasional falls. Snow is never guaranteed on a set date, so keep a spare day if catching it matters.
Within a day's drive you have Kufri (16 km), Naldehra (22 km), Chail (45 km), Tattapani (50 km) and Narkanda (60 km). A little farther, Kasauli (70 km) and Solan (45 km) make easy stops, while Manali (250 km) and Kasol (220 km) are best as overnight extensions rather than day trips.
The nearest is Shimla airport at Jubbarhatti, about 23 km away, but it handles only limited flights. Most travellers fly into Chandigarh (113 km) instead, which is far better connected, and then drive or take a bus up to Shimla in around three and a half hours.
Yes, if you have the time. The UNESCO-listed narrow-gauge line climbs 96 km from Kalka through more than a hundred tunnels and pine forest, and the ride takes about five to six hours. It is slow but scenic; book ahead in peak season as seats sell out.
Shimla is famous as the former summer capital of British India and North India's most popular hill station. It is known for the Ridge and Mall Road, colonial architecture like Christ Church and the Viceregal Lodge, the Jakhoo Hanuman temple, the Kalka-Shimla toy train, and nearby snow points such as Kufri and Narkanda.
Yes. Few hill stations pack this much into a small area: heritage streets and churches, ridge-top viewpoints, deodar forest walks, a heritage railway and quick access to snow in winter. It works for families, couples and first-time visitors to Himachal alike, especially over a relaxed two to three days.
March to June is the classic season for pleasant weather and full sightseeing, and it is also the busiest. December to February is best for snow. Autumn (mid-September to November) offers the clearest views and the apple harvest. July and August bring heavy monsoon rain and landslide risk, so plan outdoor days carefully.
Families do well with Mall Road and the Ridge, the Himalayan Nature Park and activities at Kufri, the toy train, Johnnie's Wax Museum, the Himalayan Bird Park and Chail's open cricket ground. Naldehra and Mashobra add easy forest time, and Hip Hip Hurray amusement park is a hit with younger children.
Shimla's evenings centre on the Ridge and Mall Road, which come alive with cafes, bakeries, street food and shopping, all lit up and pleasantly cool. Scandal Point and Lakkar Bazaar stay busy after dark. It is a relaxed, walkable night scene rather than a party town, so plan a leisurely stroll and a warm dinner.
It depends on your dates, length and hotels. As a rough guide, a pocket-friendly two-day Shimla trip starts from around INR 12,000 per couple for stay and local travel, rising with the season and comfort level. December and peak summer cost more. Compare current, all-inclusive rates on our Shimla packages before you book.
Indian travellers need no permit for Shimla or its usual day trips. Foreign nationals do not need a special permit for the city either, though some restricted areas deeper in Himachal near the borders do require one. Carry a valid photo ID for hotel check-ins and any protected forest or sanctuary entries.
For winter, bring heavy woollens, thermals, gloves, a cap and shoes with good grip for icy paths. For summer, pack light layers with one warm fleece for the evenings, plus sunscreen and a hat. In the monsoon add a waterproof jacket and quick-dry clothing, and choose sturdy footwear for slippery trails.
