About Matheran

Located at a height of 2516 feet above sea level , Matheran is a fantastic tourist spot with lush green pastures, serene and tranquill environment and unadulterated ambience. It was located or founded in 1850 by the British officer Hugh Mallet who wasthe Collector of Thane. This cool environment friendly hill station is perched at the Matheran ranges of the Sahyadri Mountains. The vehicles are banned from entering the hill station limits. Matheran is endowed with 38 peak points fornature lovers and adventure seekers. These points include Echo Point, King George Point and Louisa Point.  Two prime attractions are the Paymaster park and Panthers Cave. Matheran with the undulated hilly regions is one of theperfect getaways during scorching season. The stunning views of the landscapes from the cliffs of Matheran offermemorable experiences. The Hart Point is one of the scenic spots with breathtaking natural beauty.
Neral is the nearest railhead which is 20 km away from Matheran. Mumbai is the nearest airport which is 100km away. Regular bus services are freely available from Matheran to major cities in the State.
Prabal Fort now in ruins is located at the flat top of the hill named Prabhal hills in the western side of Matheran. The fort was captured by Shivaji Maharaj from Mughals. On top of the Prabal hills there is a pond. There were two gatewaysand eleven towers in the fortifications.
Alexandar Point is one of the picturesque locations in Matheran and offers grand views of Palasdari Lake, Rambaug Point,  Garbut Point, Chowk Point. The beautiful and astounding view of the Bhivpuri Power house is amazing from this cliff.
Charlotte Lake is a serene scenic spot in Matheran and is the source of drinking water in the region. An ancient templePisarnath temple is located at the right of the lake and two beautiful picnic spots Louisa Point and Echo Point are placed atthe left of the lake. The lake location is rich in lush green pastures. It is splendid during monsoon and gets dried up insummers.
Hart Point offers panoramic views of the stunning Western Ghats and the night views of clear lights of the Mumbai city. The point surrounded by dense green woods offers a cool climate for relaxation.
Louisa Point offers views of Vishalgad fort and Prabhal Fort. A great spot for watching sunset. Right of this location bearsan attractive point called 'Lion's head' as it resembles a lion's head. The better views of a waterfall, Lake Gardens, Chowk Point and Echo Point are assured from the place.
One tree hill point is a unique spot with a single Jambhul tree located at the top. The walk through the road known asShivaji's Ladder going down from the hill to the plain is a thrilling experience.
Panorama Point offers majestic view of the sunrise. One can see the aesthetic view of the Prabal Fort in the backdrop oflush green forests and also cliffs of Hart Point, Porcupine Point and Monkey Point.
Porcupine Point is an attractive view point in Matheran. The place has a shape resembling porcupine bird. It offerspanoramic view of sunset and majestic view of distant Prabalgad Fort. A major attraction is Cathedral rocks located on the western side from Porcupine point to Louisa Point.
Rambaug Point is one of the most attractive points  which offer grand views of the vicinity and the wayside hilly ranges.  The place is infested with a pleasing environment and exquisite natural beauty. One can get clear view of Karjat town, Garbut point and Khandala from this cliff.
