Chiang Mai Travel FAQs
What should I wear to Elephant Jungle Sanctuary?
Wear quick-dry clothes or a swimsuit you can bathe in, in dark colours rather than white, with strapped sandals or old shoes for the muddy riverbank. You will be soaked and covered in mud by the end, so nothing you care about. Many camps also hand out a Karen-style tunic to wear over your clothes. Bring a full change of clothes and a towel for the trip back.
What should I bring or carry?
A change of clothes, a towel, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, a dry bag or zip-lock for your phone, and cash in baht for tips and extras. Apply sunscreen at your hotel before you arrive rather than at the camp, as lotions in the river are bad for the elephants' skin. A waterproof case or an old camera is handy, since photos are allowed throughout.
Is it ethical? Can you ride the elephants at Elephant Jungle Sanctuary?
There is no elephant riding and there are no shows; the elephants are rescued and roam, and the camp works with the local Karen community. The honest caveat is that it is a hands-on camp, so you feed, bathe and mud-spa with the elephants. That is mid-spectrum welfare, not strict no-touch. If you would rather not get in the water, EJS runs a no-touch 'Watch Me' option at the same price.
How much does Elephant Jungle Sanctuary cost?
Foreigner 'from' rates are about 1,390 THB (roughly Rs 3,975) for a two-hour feed and shower, 1,900 THB (about Rs 5,435) for the popular half-day bathe and mud spa, 2,800 THB for a full day, and 7,900 THB for an overnight. Rupee figures use about Rs 2.86 to the baht and are indicative; confirm the live price when you book, as rates vary by pickup zone.
What is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Citadel is in noon because at this time of the day the traffic is a little bit less and you can reach here without much delay.
How far is Elephant Jungle Sanctuary from Chiang Mai and how do I get there?
It is about 60 km south-west of the city in the hills near Mae Wang, a drive of roughly one and a half hours each way. Nearly every booking includes free hotel pickup and drop-off, so you do not arrange your own transport. You pick a morning or afternoon session and the camp gives you a pickup window that shifts with your hotel's location, so confirm the exact time on the booking page.
What is included in the price?
Most programs include two Thai meals, drinking water, the food you hand-feed the elephants, and return hotel transfer, so the ticket is closer to all-in than it first looks. Photos are welcome throughout at no extra cost. Check the exact inclusions for your chosen program when you book, since the shorter one-hour and two-hour visits bundle a little less than the half and full-day options.
Is Elephant Jungle Sanctuary suitable for kids, elderly or pregnant travellers?
Young children can do the shorter feed-and-shower programs if you keep them within arm's reach and let the mahouts guide every interaction. The day involves a long winding hill drive, uneven riverbank footing and close contact with large animals, so it is not ideal for serious mobility issues, and pregnant travellers or anyone nervous around big animals may prefer the observe-only 'Watch Me' option. Tell the operator your group's ages and fitness when you book.
Do I need to book in advance, and can I book from India?
Yes, book ahead, especially in the November to February peak, when popular sessions fill a couple of weeks out. You can book online from anywhere, including India, and pay in advance; the free hotel pickup is arranged once your Chiang Mai stay is confirmed. Booking early also lets you pick the morning session, which is usually the better one.
What is the difference between the half-day, full-day and overnight programs?
The two-hour feed and shower is a quick meeting with the herd. The six-hour half day adds the river bath and mud spa and is the one most people book. The nine-hour full day is more feeding and caring time, and the overnight (2D1N) lets you stay with the camp and community. There is also a no-touch 'Watch Me' half day at the same price as the bathing half day for those who prefer to observe.
Elephant Jungle Sanctuary or Elephant Nature Park: which should I choose?
Choose on how hands-on you want to be. Elephant Jungle Sanctuary is the hands-on option, where you feed, bathe and mud-spa with the elephants, about 60 km out near Mae Wang. An observation-style camp lets you watch the elephants live their day without getting in the water. Neither is wrong; pick EJS for a hands-on bathing day and the observe-only model if that is more your line.
