Srinagar Travel FAQs
What are the best Shalimar Bagh tips for a first visit?
Arrive at opening time or after 4 pm, and plan 1 to 1.5 hours. Walk uphill along the central channel so the three terraces unfold in order, and finish at the Black Pavilion on the top terrace. Carry Rs 10 and Rs 20 notes for the Rs 30 ticket, wear shoes with grip for the wet stone edges, and stay out of the flower beds. In winter and during Ramzan, confirm the closing time the evening before.
How much time do I need at Shalimar Bagh?
Plan 1 to 1.5 hours to walk all three terraces up to the Black Pavilion and back, with time to stop at the chini khana niches and sit under the chinars. A quick loop of the central channel takes 30 to 45 minutes. Add another hour if you are pairing it with Nishat Bagh, 2.8 km away, which most Srinagar sightseeing days do.
What is the Shalimar Bagh entry fee?
The J&K Floriculture Department's rates, in force since 1 March 2024, are Rs 30 for an Indian adult, Rs 15 for a child below 12 and Rs 100 for a foreign national. Phone and camera photography carries no extra charge. Nishat, Chashme Shahi and Pari Mahal each sell their own ticket. Counters can run short of change, so keep small notes even if you plan to pay by UPI.
What are Shalimar Bagh's timings?
Shalimar Bagh opens at about 9 am and closes at about 7 pm from April to October, and runs about 10 am to 5 pm from November to March. Hours are shorter during Ramzan. No official timetable is published online, so ask your hotel or houseboat the evening before, especially in winter. Older listings that say the garden closes at 3:30 pm are out of date.
What is the best time to visit Shalimar Bagh?
Late April to June is best for flowers and running fountains, and late October to mid-November for copper-red chinars. Mid-April is busy because Tulip Garden visitors add Shalimar to the same day. The best time of day is opening time, when the central channel is empty, or after 4 pm, when low sun lights the cascades and the tour groups have left.
Is Shalimar Bagh better than Nishat Bagh?
They suit different visitors. Shalimar is larger, calmer and more formal, with the best Mughal architecture, the Black Pavilion and more shade. Nishat Bagh has more terraces and the better view across Dal Lake. They are only 2.8 km apart, about 10 minutes by car, so most visitors do both in one morning. With time for one, pick Shalimar for history and Nishat for the view.
Can you pluck flowers in Shalimar Bagh?
No. Plucking flowers is prohibited, garden staff watch the beds, and travellers have reported a Rs 500 fine for it. Stepping into the beds for photos is also discouraged. Shoot from the paths instead. Litter is the other rule staff enforce, so carry a bag for wrappers and bottles and take it out with you.
Is Shalimar Bagh suitable for elderly visitors?
Yes. It is the easiest Mughal garden in Srinagar for slow walkers. The central paths are broad, the terraces are shallow, and benches under the chinars make good rest stops. There are steps between the terraces and wheelchair access to the top terrace is limited, so elderly visitors can enjoy the lower two terraces and view the Black Pavilion from below if the climb is too much.
Is Shalimar Bagh good for kids and families?
Yes. The lawns are wide, there is plenty of picnic space under the chinars, and children have room to run. Keep small children back from the fountain edges and channel walls, which stay wet and slippery. The first terrace is the easiest with a pram, and toilets are near the entrance. Weekday mornings are calmer than Sunday afternoons, when local families fill the lawns.
Are there food stalls and toilets at Shalimar Bagh?
Tea, kahwa and snack stalls sit outside the gate, and toilets are near the entrance. There are no restaurants inside the garden, so carry a water bottle and a small snack for the walk up the terraces. For a proper meal, head back towards Boulevard Road or eat after Nishat Bagh. Ask at the gate whether outside food is allowed on the day of your visit.
Can I fly a drone or do a pre-wedding shoot at Shalimar Bagh?
Phone and camera photography is free. Srinagar district has restricted the use and possession of private drones since a July 2021 district magistrate order, so don't plan to fly one over the gardens or Dal Lake. Professional and pre-wedding shoots with crews and props also need prior permission, so contact the Floriculture Department before you travel rather than asking at the gate.
What is Shalimar Bagh famous for?
Shalimar Bagh is the largest Mughal garden in Srinagar, at about 31 acres, and is known as the Crown of Srinagar. It is famous for its three terraces split by the Shah Nahar water channel, the fountains and cascades, the black-stone pavilion on the top terrace, the chini khana lamp niches behind its waterfalls and its autumn chinars. It is part of the Mughal Gardens group on UNESCO's tentative list.
Who built Shalimar Bagh?
Mughal emperor Jahangir laid out Shalimar Bagh for his wife Nur Jahan in 1619 and named it Farah Bakhsh. In 1630 Shah Jahan had his governor Zafar Khan extend it as Faiz Bakhsh. The garden follows the Persian chahar-bagh plan, with a public court on the lowest terrace, the emperor's private court in the middle and the zenana garden for the royal women at the top.
What attractions are near Shalimar Bagh?
Shalimar Bagh sits on the north-east shore of Dal Lake, 14 km from Lal Chowk. Nishat Bagh is 2.8 km away. Hazratbal Shrine is about 7 km, and Chashme Shahi and the Tulip Garden are each about 8 km. Pari Mahal is about 9 km. A sunset shikara from the Boulevard Road ghats makes an easy finish to a garden day.
