How to Reach Lion’s Paws in Sigiriya

If you’re wondering how to reach Lion’s Paws while you’re planning a visit to this magnificent site, then you need not worry, as reaching this place is quite smooth.

If you want to reach the site directly from the airport, then the domestic airport located at the closest distance from the site is Sigiriya Airport (6.2 kilometers). To reach the destination, you can catch a cab that won’t take more than 10 to 15 minutes. Check out for the other different modes given below.

By Train: A train to reach Sigiriya is also a great option! Situated at a distance of 15.5 kilometers from the site, Habarana Railway station is the right place to take a taxi from. The taxi will take around 22 minutes from there.

By Road: If you want to travel via car all the way from Bandaranaike International Airport, then you can do that too. The cab will take around 3 hours 40 minutes till the town of Sigiriya. If you’re coming from Kandy, you can board a bus that stops at the town of Dambulla from where you’ll have to catch another one to finally reach Sigiriya.

The well-known British archaeologist, Harry Charles Purvis Bell discovered this half structure in the year 1898.

The whole lion was believed to symbolize the Lord Buddha and was referred to as Sakya Simha that translates to Lion that belonged to the clan of Sakya. This very fact till date brings many people to this site who are dedicated devotees of Buddha.

The whole structure, including the lion's head is said to have been built in the 5th century. The remains of the head are still there.
