About Shopping Guide In Chiang Mai

Night Bazaar In Chiang Mai

The Chiang Mai Night Bazaar runs every single night on Chang Klan Road, roughly from 6 pm until 11 pm, and it costs nothing to walk in. Locals still send first-time visitors here for a night of shopping, and after one lap you understand why. Hundreds of stalls spill along a kilometre of pavement selling Thai silk, hill-trib...

Chiang Mai is the best place in Thailand for handmade shopping, and most of it happens after dark. The nightly Chiang Mai Night Bazaar on Chang Klan Road is the easy starting point, but the real finds are at the weekend walking streets: the huge Sunday street through the Old City and the Saturday street on Wualai Road, the old silver quarter. By day, Warorot Market sells local textiles and food, the malls around Nimman cover air-conditioned comfort, and the craft villages just outside town make umbrellas, silver and woodcarving you can watch being made. This 2026 guide covers where to go, what to buy, how hard to bargain and what it all costs an Indian traveller.

Chiang Mai shopping at a glance

No other guide lays the markets side by side, so start here. Days and hours shift, so confirm locally; spend is indicative per person and depends entirely on what you buy.

Market / area What it is Best for When Spend (Rs, pp)
Night Bazaar (Chang Klan Rd) Nightly stalls, food courts, souvenirs First night, easy souvenirs Nightly, ~6pm to midnight 500 to 1,500
Sunday Walking Street (Ratchadamnoen) Huge handmade-craft street fair Handicrafts, atmosphere Sun, ~4pm to midnight 500 to 2,000
Saturday Walking Street (Wualai) Silver quarter, crafts and food Silver, calmer crafts Sat, ~4pm to 11pm 500 to 2,000
Warorot Market (Kad Luang) Local day market, fabric, dried food Textiles, snacks, no-frills Daily, ~6am to 5pm 300 to 1,200
Nimman (MAYA, One Nimman) Malls, boutiques, design shops AC comfort, brands, cafes Daily, ~11am to 10pm 500 to 3,000
Craft villages (Bo Sang, Ban Tawai) Umbrellas, woodcarving, workshops Authentic crafts, a day trip Daily, ~9am to 5pm 500 to 3,000

Night markets and walking streets

For most visitors the market is the main event, and it happens in the evening. The Chiang Mai Night Bazaar on Chang Klan Road runs every night, a long ribbon of stalls, food courts and beer bars where you can eat, shop and people-watch in one place. It is touristy and prices start high, so it is the spot to practise your bargaining. Two weekly walking streets are where locals and repeat visitors actually shop.

Sunday Walking Street (Thanon Ratchadamnoen) is the big one. The road closes from Tha Phae Gate deep into the Old City and fills with hundreds of stalls of handmade crafts, art, clothing and street food, plus buskers and foot-massage chairs. It gets shoulder-to-shoulder busy after 6pm, so come early for the good handmade stuff and to move at all.

Saturday Walking Street runs down Wualai Road, the historic silver-making quarter near Wat Sri Suphan (the silver temple). It is a little smaller and calmer than Sunday's and the obvious place to buy silverwork, with the same mix of crafts and food. If you only do one walking street for silver, make it this one.

Anusarn Market, tucked beside the Night Bazaar, adds a compact food-and-souvenir corner, while the smaller Kalare and North Gate (Chang Phuak) night markets are more about street food than shopping. For a full stall-by-stall rundown across every night market, see our shopping in Chiang Mai blog.

What to buy in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai was the capital of the Lanna kingdom, and its craft traditions are the reason to shop here rather than just collect fridge magnets. A few things are genuinely worth the suitcase space:

Silver is the signature buy, made for generations in the Wualai quarter. Look for the heavier, hallmarked pieces at the Saturday street and the workshops near Wat Sri Suphan rather than thin tourist plate.

Bo Sang umbrellas are the hand-painted paper-and-bamboo parasols made in the umbrella village east of the city, sold everywhere from palm-sized decorations to full sun umbrellas.

Celadon is the crackle-glazed jade-green stoneware from the Sankampaeng road, sturdy enough to check into a bag with care. Lacquerware, teak woodcarving and hand-woven silk and cotton (including hill-tribe embroidery) round out the craft list.

Everyday buys that actually get used at home: the ubiquitous cotton elephant-print trousers, northern Thai coffee from Doi Chang and Doi Tung, spices and curry pastes, and natural soaps and spa goods. One honest word on authenticity: much of the 'antique' and 'handmade' stock in the tourist markets is factory-made replica. For the real thing, buy silver in Wualai, celadon and woodcarving from the craft villages, and treat anything sold as a genuine antique with caution.

Craft villages and the handicraft trail

The best shopping in Chiang Mai is often outside Chiang Mai. A cluster of craft villages east and south of the city is where the umbrellas, silver, celadon and woodcarving are actually made, and where you can watch the work and buy at closer to source price. This is the part almost no other guide covers.

Bo Sang (about 9 km east, on the San Kamphaeng road) is the umbrella village, its main street lined with workshops hand-painting the famous paper parasols; the umbrella festival each January is worth timing a trip around.

Sankampaeng continues east along the same handicraft road, a strip of celadon kilns, silk and lacquerware showrooms. Ban Tawai (about 15 km south, near Hang Dong) is the woodcarving and home-decor village, rows of workshops turning teak into furniture, bowls and carvings. A Grab or a half-day hired car with a driver strings these together easily, and it makes a good pairing with a temple or countryside stop.

Shopping malls and Nimman

When the heat or the rain wins, Chiang Mai's malls are cheap, cool and genuinely useful for last-minute buys. Central Festival, out on the east side, is the biggest, a full international mall with a cinema and a large food hall. In the trendy Nimman area, MAYA Lifestyle anchors the corner with fashion, a supermarket and a rooftop bar, while One Nimman is the open-air lifestyle plaza next door, a walkable square of boutiques, a craft market and cafes that few guides mention. Kad Suan Kaew is the older, more local mall near the Old City, and Central Airport Plaza is the handy last-day stop for a VAT-refund run before your flight. Malls are fixed-price, so save the haggling for the markets.

Fresh and local markets by day

For a taste of how the city actually shops, skip the tourist stalls and head to Warorot Market, known locally as Kad Luang, the sprawling covered day market on the edge of Chinatown. Its ground floor is dried food, snacks and northern Thai sausage; the upper floors are cheap fabric, hill-tribe textiles and clothes at prices the night markets cannot touch. Right beside it, the Ton Lamyai flower market runs almost round the clock in a wash of marigolds and roses, and the wholesale Muang Mai market handles the city's fruit and vegetables. These are day markets, busiest in the morning, and mostly semi-fixed price, so bargaining is gentler than at the night stalls.

Bargaining, prices and getting around

Bargaining is expected at the night markets and stalls, and skipping it means overpaying. Vendors open high for tourists, so a friendly counter at roughly 60 to 70 percent of the first price, then settling somewhere around three-quarters, is normal. Smile, stay polite, and be ready to walk away, which often gets you the price anyway. Malls, boutiques and Warorot's fabric floors are fixed or semi-fixed, so do not haggle there. Here is what the everyday stuff costs, converted at roughly Rs 2.85 to the baht.

Item Typical price (Rs)
Market or walking-street entry Free
Street-food snack or plate 115 to 260
Local beer at a market bar 170 to 340
Cotton elephant-print trousers 285 to 500
Handwoven scarf or sarong 285 to 850
Bo Sang paper umbrella (small to mid) 340 to 1,425
Celadon bowl or small ceramic 430 to 1,425
Silver pendant or small piece (Wualai) 850 to 3,400
Songthaew (red truck) hop across town 85 to 170
Grab / Bolt short ride 170 to 430

Getting between the markets is simple. The red songthaews (shared trucks) are the cheapest way across town; agree the fare before you climb in. Grab and Bolt work well and take the haggling out of the ride, which is handy when you are loaded with bags. Within the Old City almost everything is walkable, but the craft villages and Central Festival need a ride. Carry cash: most stalls do not take cards, and ATMs charge a flat foreign-card fee per withdrawal, so take out larger amounts less often.

VAT refund and taking your buys home

Thailand charges 7 percent VAT, and foreign tourists can claim a lot of it back on bigger purchases, which is worth knowing before you shop the malls. Buy from shops showing a 'VAT Refund for Tourists' sign, spend over the per-shop, per-day minimum, and ask the shop to fill in the refund form (P.P.10) against your passport at the till. You then claim the total back at the airport on departure once your combined spend clears the overall minimum, so keep the forms and receipts together and leave time before your flight. Central Airport Plaza and Central Festival are the easiest places to hit the threshold in one shop. For fragile buys like celadon, ask the shop to bubble-wrap and box them, and carry the delicate pieces as hand baggage.

Is it safe to shop alone and at night?

Chiang Mai is one of the safest cities in Asia to wander after dark, and the night markets are family-friendly and relaxed rather than pushy, so solo travellers and women shop them comfortably. The main risk is ordinary pickpocketing in the shoulder-to-shoulder crush of the Sunday street, so wear your bag across your body and keep your phone and cash in a front pocket. Agree songthaew fares upfront, use Grab or Bolt for longer trips after the markets close, and stick to the busy, well-lit main streets late at night. Petty scams aside, hassle is rare and the vibe is easygoing.

Best time to shop in Chiang Mai

The walking streets only run on their set evenings, so plan a Saturday and a Sunday night into your trip if you can, and keep any craft-village day trip for the daytime midweek when the villages are open and quiet. The cool, dry season from November to February is the most comfortable for the open-air markets; the rainy months from June to October rarely wash a market out but a light poncho helps. For the full month-by-month picture, see the best time to visit Chiang Mai. Time it right and the Bo Sang umbrella festival in January turns the whole craft trail into a celebration.

Our Chiang Mai team re-checks these markets, days and price bands each season against local listings. "Do the Saturday street on Wualai for silver and the Sunday street for everything else, and get there by 5pm before the crowds and the best handmade stalls sell out," says our Chiang Mai team. The check-in process was seamless. The accommodation itself was beyond my expectations.I really love the swimming pool and the buffet breakfast. Beyond the hotel, the itinerary you crafted for us was diverse and captivating. Yugal was our travel agent. He was always available from the day we booked the trip till we completed our trip. He was always a call away and was helpful to resolve all the queries. His commitment was commendable. We took 4 night 5 days package. The hotels we stayed were fortunately good. Cab serv
ices were not as much cooperative as expected. I would suggest to include most imp tourist spots of bangkok/pattaya in basic package itself. Like we had a bangkok city tour in our package but reclining budha/watarun temple was not part of it. Better to have it included in basic packages which would improve customer satisfaction. But overall it was a good and hustle free experience.

    Chiang Mai Travel FAQs

What is Chiang Mai famous for shopping, and what should I buy?

Chiang Mai is Thailand's handicraft capital, so buy the crafts it actually makes: hallmarked silver from the Wualai quarter, hand-painted Bo Sang paper umbrellas, jade-green celadon ceramics, teak woodcarving, lacquerware and hand-woven silk and cotton. For everyday buys, the cotton elephant-print trousers, northern Thai coffee and curry pastes travel well. Skip mass-made 'antiques' and buy crafts near their source.

Which is the best night market in Chiang Mai?

The Sunday Walking Street through the Old City is the best overall for handmade crafts and atmosphere, though it gets very crowded. The nightly Night Bazaar on Chang Klan Road is the easiest if your dates do not line up with a weekend, and the Saturday Walking Street on Wualai Road is the one to pick for silver. Come early evening for the best stalls and room to move.

Sunday or Saturday walking street, what is the difference?

Both close a road for crafts, food and buskers, but they are in different places and run on different nights. The Sunday street fills Ratchadamnoen Road through the Old City and is much bigger, busier and broader in what it sells. The Saturday street runs down Wualai Road, the historic silver quarter, and is a little smaller, calmer and the better bet for silverwork. If you can, do both.

What time do the markets and walking streets open?

The walking streets run roughly from late afternoon, about 4pm, until around midnight on their set day (Saturday on Wualai, Sunday on Ratchadamnoen). The Night Bazaar runs nightly from about 6pm to midnight. Day markets like Warorot open early, around 6am, and wind down by late afternoon. Hours shift with the season and holidays, so it is worth confirming locally on the day.

Central Festival or MAYA, which mall is better?

Central Festival, on the east side, is the biggest and most complete mall, with a cinema, international brands and a large food hall, but it is a ride out of the centre. MAYA Lifestyle in Nimman is smaller and more central, handy for fashion, a supermarket and its rooftop bar, with the open-air One Nimman plaza next door. Pick Central for range, MAYA for location.

Is bargaining expected in Chiang Mai, and how much should I haggle?

Yes, at the night markets and stalls bargaining is normal and expected. Vendors open high for tourists, so counter at roughly 60 to 70 percent of the first price and settle around three-quarters, staying friendly and ready to walk away. Do not haggle in the malls, boutiques or on Warorot's fabric floors, which are fixed or semi-fixed price. A smile gets you further than hard bargaining.

How much does shopping in Chiang Mai cost for an Indian traveller?

It is cheap by Indian standards. Budget roughly Rs 500 to Rs 2,000 for a good night at a walking street, depending on what you buy. Elephant trousers run about Rs 285 to Rs 500, a scarf Rs 285 to Rs 850, a Bo Sang umbrella Rs 340 to Rs 1,425, and small silver from around Rs 850. Add Rs 85 to Rs 430 for songthaew or Grab rides. Prices use roughly Rs 2.85 to the baht.

Where do I buy real silver, lacquerware and handicrafts?

Buy silver in the Wualai quarter, at the Saturday Walking Street and the workshops near Wat Sri Suphan, and look for heavier, hallmarked pieces. For celadon, lacquerware and woodcarving, the craft villages east and south of the city (Bo Sang, Sankampaeng and Ban Tawai) sell closer to source and let you see the work being made. Much of the market 'handmade' stock is factory replica, so it pays to go to the source.

Can I claim a VAT refund on shopping in Chiang Mai?

Yes. Thailand charges 7 percent VAT and foreign tourists can reclaim much of it on larger purchases. Buy from shops showing a 'VAT Refund for Tourists' sign, spend over the per-shop, per-day minimum, and have the shop complete the refund form against your passport. You claim the total at the airport on departure once your overall spend clears the threshold, so keep the forms and receipts and leave extra time before your flight.

Is it safe to shop alone and at night in Chiang Mai?

Very. Chiang Mai is one of the safest cities in Asia after dark, and the night markets are relaxed and family-friendly, so solo travellers and women shop them comfortably. The real risk is pickpocketing in the crush of the Sunday street, so wear a bag across your body and keep cash in a front pocket. Agree fares before rides, use Grab or Bolt late, and stay on busy, well-lit streets.
