Chiang Mai Travel FAQs
What is the dress code for Wat Phra That Doi Suthep?
Your shoulders and knees must be covered, and the rule applies to men and women alike. Avoid vests, tank tops, spaghetti straps, short shorts, above-the-knee skirts and see-through fabric. It is actively enforced, so anyone underdressed is asked to cover up before the upper terrace. If in doubt, wear long trousers or a below-the-knee skirt with a sleeved top, or carry a scarf or sarong to cover up on the spot.
Can I wear shorts or leggings to Doi Suthep?
Knee-length shorts are fine for men and women; short shorts and anything above the knee are not. Leggings on their own are borderline at the temple and better worn under a long top or skirt. Note that Bhubing Palace, 4 km up the same road, does not accept leggings at all, so if you plan to visit both, wear long trousers or a long skirt from the start of the day.
Do I have to cover my shoulders?
Yes. Covered shoulders are required to go up to the temple terrace, for men and women. Skip sleeveless tops, vests and spaghetti straps. The easiest fix is to carry a light scarf, sarong or dupatta and drape it over your shoulders when you arrive, which also doubles as sun protection on the exposed, high mountain terrace.
Do I have to take my shoes off?
Yes, remove your footwear before stepping into the inner terrace shrines and prayer halls where the golden chedi stands. There are racks by the entrance, and socks are fine if you prefer not to go barefoot. You keep your shoes on for the 309-step staircase, the lower courtyard and the viewpoints. Slip-on shoes or sandals make this far easier than laced boots.
Can I rent a sarong at the temple, and how much is it?
Cover-ups are usually available to borrow or hire near the entrance for a small fee or a refundable deposit. The catch is that they can run short when tour groups arrive and the fabric is coarse, so packing your own light sarong or large scarf is cheaper and more comfortable, and it works at every other temple on your trip. An Indian cotton dupatta is ideal.
Is there a specific etiquette for women, and can I touch a monk?
Women follow the same cover-shoulders-and-knees dress code, and there is one extra rule: a woman should not touch a monk or hand anything to him directly. Place the item down or pass it through a man, and the monk will use a cloth to receive it. Beyond that, everyone should keep their head lower than the monks and Buddha images, sit with feet tucked away, speak quietly and avoid public displays of affection.
What is the entrance fee for Doi Suthep?
Foreign visitors pay a small fee, around 30 THB (roughly Rs 85), to enter the upper terrace with the golden chedi, while the mountain approach and lower grounds are free and Thai nationals enter free. Bring small baht notes for the counter. Fees change over time, so check the current rate on our Doi Suthep entry fees page before you travel rather than relying on a figure that may be out of date.
What time does Wat Phra That Doi Suthep open?
The temple is open every day from about 06:00 to 18:00, and arriving at opening is the coolest, quietest and clearest time, with a chance of a sunrise view over Chiang Mai. Some sources list a later closing time, so confirm the exact hours, including any changes on Buddhist holidays, on our Doi Suthep timings page before you build your morning around them.
How many steps are there, and is there a cable car?
The classic Naga staircase has 309 steps, flanked by long serpent balustrades, and takes only a few minutes despite being steep. If knees, heat or young children make the climb hard, a funicular runs beside the steps for about 20 THB one-way, roughly Rs 57, and delivers you close to the terrace step-free. Both arrive at the same place, so choose whichever suits your group.
How long do you need at Doi Suthep?
About one to one and a half hours at the temple itself is comfortable: the climb or funicular, a clockwise loop of the golden chedi, the shrines and the city viewpoints. Most travellers make a half-day of the mountain by adding Bhubing Palace and a Hmong village further up the road, so allow three to four hours in total including the drive up and down.
What should I wear if I also visit Bhubing Palace?
Dress for the palace and you are covered for the temple too. Bhubing Palace has a stricter code than Doi Suthep: no shorts, no bare shoulders, and leggings are not accepted, though sarongs and trousers can be hired at its gate. Wear long trousers or a long skirt with a sleeved top from the start of the day, and check the palace is open on your dates, as it closes to visitors when the royal family is in residence.
