About Imperial Palace in Tokyo

The Imperial Palace located in Tokyo, which literally also means Imperial Residence, is the primary residing place of the Emperor of Japan.

At present, the Tokyo Imperial Palace is located on the former site of a massive park arena covered by massive stone walls and moats right in the middle of Tokyo known as Edo Castle. It is located in Chiyoda ward of Tokyo, in close proximity to the Tokyo Station. Japan’s Imperial family has taken up residence here, and it remains a royal attraction for visitors coming from all over the world.

The Imperial Palace in Tokyo is constructed in the form of a large park, and comprises several buildings in the main palace where the Imperial Family of Japan resides. The Palace also features an archive, several museums and administrative offices in its premises. The entire area occupied by the Imperial Palace is 1.15 sq kms which also includes the gorgeous gardens.

History of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo

The Imperial Palace in Tokyo was constructed on the sites of Edo Castle. In 1873, Edo Castle was destroyed in a fire. In 1888, lots of restoration works were carried out and a new Imperial Palace was built. The entire area is surrounded by thick walls and is home to many buildings and gardens.

Significance of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo

The Imperial Palace in Tokyo is also known to be the largest green area in the central part of Tokyo. The Palace along with the famous Kokyogaien National Gardens make up for the most green area in the city. There is a long trail of 5 km inside the Palace where joggers come every morning either for a walk or run. There are three main parts of the Imperial Palace grounds - the Imperial Palace itself, East Garden, and Kokyo Gaien National Park. In the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, you will find the Imperial Residence, Fukiage Omiya Palace, Imperial Palace, the Imperial Household Agency buildings, Momijiyama Imperial Cocoonery, the Imperial Concert Hall and the East Garden of the Imperial Palace.

Entry to the grounds of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo takes place only twice a year - on the 2nd of January during New Year's Greeting and 23rd of December during the Emperor's birthday. It is only during these two days when visitors are permitted entry to the inner palace grounds to have a glimpse of the Imperial Family. You have to book the entry at least a day in advance.
