Culture of Amritsar

The city has a major population of Sikhs and Hindus. It is known as the main spiritual and cultural hub of Punjab. The dance form of Bhangra, popular all over the country and the world, is an emblematic feature of Amritsar. Giddha is another popular dance form among the Punjabi women here. Gatka is generally performed on religious events. Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrations at the Golden Temple are worth celebrating. Diwali, Holi, and Dusshera are also celebrated in Amritsar with great fervour.

Punjabi is the most widely spoken language in the city. However, Hindi and other North Indian languages are also understood by the locals. English is another common tongue in the city.

Climate of Amritsar

Amritsar has a semi-arid climate which means the city braves cold winters and hot summers. Amritsar witnesses extreme temperatures in the summer, between April and June. Daytime temperatures reach as high as 45°C in May. Monsoons bring a little relief as the rainfall helps the mercury fall. The monsoons start in mid-July and end in early October. The winter season in Amritsar, from November to March, is the best time to visit the city.

Food of Amritsar

Punjabis are well-known for their gastronomy delights and unique cuisine. Between Amritsari kulchas and a glass of lassi, the city has a delectable spread of Punjabi cuisine. Street-side vendors near tourist attractions serve “makke di roti with sarson da saag or maah ki dal.” For non-vegetarians with large appetite, the choices are many: chicken tikka, butter chicken masala, and mutton chaap. For dessert, Gajar ka halwa and lassi with Kesar on top can put any crème brûlée to shame.

Amritsari Dhaba have carved a special place for themselves. Kesar Da Dhaba serves soul-greasing vegetarian food and its velvety Dal Fry is a must-have. Bharawan Da Dhaba, Brother’s Dhaba, Pal Da Dhaba, and Beera Chicken House are packed to the grills and make up the city’s robust food culture.

Facts about Amritsar

It is the second-largest city in Punjab. The city was founded by Guru Ram Das, the fourth guru in Sikhism, in 1574. Up to 1 lakh people dine at the free community kitchen or gurudwara langar at Harmandir Sahib or the Golden Temple.
