Deriving its name from the legend of Io, who was one of the lovers of Zeus, Bosphorus is a Thracian word, and denoted the ‘passage of cow’. While, in Turkish language it means- ‘inner strait’. Also known as the strait of Istanbul, Bosphorus is one of the most significant waterways of the Northern Istanbul which connects the Black Sea, the Sea of Marmara and the Dardanelles, Aegean and Mediterranean Sea by extension.

History of Bosphorus

The Bosphorus has been the significant waterways since its ancient times. It is the only passage between the two major Black Sea and the Mediterranean due to which there had even been war for resulting in severe damage of the shores.  The strait of Istanbul, Bosphorus is a natural strait which made it even more prone to war in the ancient times. Even in the modern history of Bosphorus, there was even a conflict due to this attraction during the First World War. It is also being said that during ancient times, the northern side of the strait was blocked by rock and earth. However, later an earthquake destroyed the blockage, and the strait released a deluge of water which brought floods to its coastal communities.  

Bosphorus also holds a lot of importance in terms of economy and commercial purposes of Istanbul. It connects Istanbul with the rest of the world through the major water lines. Because of Bosphorus, Istanbul can even connect with Russia and Ukraine through the sea.

Bosphorus even acts as a major tourist spot due to its natural beauty. One can go on a cruise to Bosphorus and observe the beauty of the place. It has 620 waterfront houses which was built during the reign of the Ottoman. There are many palaces and monuments which can be viewed while on the cruise. There are even ferries to the rest of the town from the strait itself. The Bosphorus has even three suspension bridges that connect Europe to Asia and vice-versa. And, all the bridges are tolled when vehicles head towards the Aisan direction.

One of the interesting facts about the Bosphorus is that no pedestrian or bicycle are allowed on its bridges.

This natural strait forms a border between Asia and Europe.

A huge flock of  fishermen used to fish off the bridge of Bosphorus.

About 30 km in length, this popular strait is 3700 meter wide at the northern side, while around 700 meter wide at the other side.

The Bosphorus first became international water and got governed by the League of Nations. Later, in July 1936, the Montreux Convention established it as an international lane for shipping. However, Turkey was given rights to prohibit ships coming from Black Sea nations.  

An inundated valley, the Bosphorus Strait sprawls over 20 miles, and follows an irregular course in northeast and southwest direction. The course is around 30 km long, 3700 meter wide, and 120 meter deep.
