The Notre Dame Cathedral is home to the cathedral of the Archbishop of Paris, along with the treasury. History of Notre Dame Cathedral

The construction history of Notre Dame de Paris dates back to 1160 when the then Bishop Maurice de Sully ordered demolition of the Paris cathedral, Saint-Étienne (St Stephen's) calling it unworthy. On its place, the foundation stone of Notre Dame de Paris was laid either by Sully or Pope Alexander III in 1163. The high altar was later consecrated in 1189. While sections like the western façade and the choir were ready by 1250, others like chapels, porches and various individual embellishments were incorporated during the next 100 years. The cathedral was completed in 1345. While Sully dedicated his life and finances for the construction, various architectures contributed to the building, which is evident from the different architectures in the Cathedral.

Masses in Notre Dame Cathedral

Appropriate dress is required while attending a mass. Tourists can attend mass at the cathedral between Monday and Saturday. On these days, a mass takes place in the choir at 8 am and 9 am (except in the summer months). Visitors can also attend mass at the high altar at 12 pm and 6:15 pm. All Sunday masses at Notre Dame are held at the high altar at 8:30 am, 9:30 am, 10 am, 11:30 am, 12:45 pm, 5:45 pm, and 6:30 pm.

Popular events shown in the cathedral include the Choir of the Church in 1669, the Cult of Reason during the French Revolution, the coronation of Henry VI during the Hundred Years' War, and coronation of Napoleon I as Emperor of the French.

Today, there are several classical music concerts performed at the Notre Dame during the summer months. Around the Christmas season, nativity scenes and gospels are held regularly.
