About Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris
The Notre Dame Cathedral is a medieval era Catholic cathedral in Paris. Its name can be translated into “Our Lady of Paris”. It is located in the 4th arrondissement of the city, on the Île de la Cité. It is one of the most popular of all Gothic cathedrals of the middle ages in Paris. It is, in fact, said to be an amazing example of French Gothic architecture across the world. Some of the famous architectural quirks that differentiate it from the Romanesque architecture are its natural looking sculptures and stained glass windows.
The Notre Dame Cathedral is home to the cathedral of the Archbishop of Paris, along with the treasury. The cathedral is home to several artifacts and historical relics, such as a reliquary in the treasury of the cathedral, the Crown of Thorns, one of the Holy Nails and a small fragment of the True Cross. Although it is possible to enter the cathedral free of cost, if one wants to climb the stairs to get to the terrace then a small fees has to be paid. The view of the entire city of Paris from the terrace is something that one cannot miss out on, when in Paris.
History of Notre Dame Cathedral
The construction history of Notre Dame de Paris dates back to 1160, when the then Bishop Maurice de Sully ordered demolition of the Paris cathedral, Saint-Étienne (St Stephen's) calling it unworthy. On its place, the foundation stone of Notre Dame de Paris was laid either by Sully or Pope Alexander III in 1163. The high altar was later consecrated in 1189. While sections like the western façade and the choir were ready by 1250, others like chapels, porches and various individual embellishments were incorporated during the next 100 years. The cathedral was completed in 1345. While Sully dedicated his life and finances for the construction, various architectures contributed to the building, which is evident from the different architectures in the Cathedral.
