About Tokyo Skytree in Tokyo

The Tokyo Skytree located in Tokyo is a gigantic broadcasting and observation tower in Tokyo.

It is located in Sumida and is considered the second tallest structure in the world, after Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai. With a recorded height of 2,080 feet and 450 floors above ground level, it is also the tallest tower in the world and is the main television and radio broadcasting site for the entire Kanto region. The Tokyo Skytree was built especially to make sure that the signals being transmitted to and from this tower are not impeded by the nearby skyscrapers, which had led to the decommissioning of the earlier television and radio broadcasting tower.

History of Tokyo Skytree

For those interested in the Tokyo Skytree history, the building resembles a pagoda with 5 stories from Japanese architecture, especially buildings from mythology, but with a modern twist. The tower houses observatories as well, at a height of 1,150 feet, from where uninterrupted views of the entire city can be seen on a clear day. The construction of this majestic structure was completed on 29th February 2012 and opened for the public on 22nd May 2012.

Significance of Tokyo Skytree

The observatory of Tokyo Skytree, Japan features a spiral skywalk, covered in glass with a small section of glass flooring as well to make the visitors feel as if they are walking on air. This is the first thing that visitors enquire about Tokyo Skytree. This earthquake-resistant building with a silvery exterior became a major attraction for locals and tourists alike when it had initially opened up.

360-degree Views

The massive tower is a popular tourist spot and offers a 360-degree view of the entire Tokyo city. People come here to observe the beautiful sunset views from the 340th floor of the tower.

Tickets for two months after it opened operations were booked, and people waited hours in line for a chance to enjoy a visit here. In its first week itself, it attracted more than 1.6 million visitors to its doors. The colors in which the tower is illuminated are based on Japanese beliefs, with traditional colors of blue and purple being used for the special illumination design. On a Tokyo Skytree tour, with the tower rising head and shoulders above the city, this tower might be a modern spectacle for tourists, but the traditional beliefs of the Japanese have definitely left its mark on the Tokyo Skytree.
