How To Reach Periyar Lake Thekkady

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Western Ghats. It has a rich biodiversity. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary has 265 species of birds and about 60 species of mammals. Also, many species of reptiles and amphibians are found here. About 1970 flowering plants are found here. Several treks are also organized in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. There are several watchtowers in the Periyar Tiger Reserve which offer a breathtaking view of the entire region. 

Madurai Airport is the nearest airport from Periyar. It is located at a distance of about 145 kilometers from Periyar. Cochin Airport is located at a distance of about 170 kilometers from Periyar. 

The nearest railway station from Periyar is Kottayam, which is at a distance of about 95 kilometers. Kottayam has train connectivity with major cities like Delhi, Mumbai etc. 


There are plenty of KSRTC buses plying from Kottayam to Kumali at regular intervals. It takes about 4 hours time to reach from Kottayam to Kumali. Also, many buses are available from Madurai and Munnar for Kumali. 

Many cabs are also available from Madurai, Munnar and Kottayam.

When is the best time to visit the lake?

The lake shouldn't be visited during the monsoon if one is going to observe wildlife, only in dry seasons animals come to drink water from the banks of the lake.
