Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves are located at a distance of 6 kms from the main city of Bhubaneshwar.

These caves are an ancient example of the Jain era which takes you back to the culture and lifestyle of the Jain ascetics. Udayagiri caves comprise of 18 caves while the Khandagiri caves comprise of 15 caves. All these 33 caves are an impressive example of the humble lifestyle of the Jain monks who once lived here. This simplicity is also reflected in the structure and architectural style of the caves. Caves of Khandagiri and Udayagiri feature several motifs, paintings and engravings of royal processions, hunting expeditions and court scenes from the Jain era.

Udaygiri and Khandagiri are seated on the hills located along the premises of the city of Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha. The caves are undoubtedly a treasure trove of the historic remnants of the rich past of India. Out of all the 33 caves found here, most of the caves have been carved out by the Jain monks, artisans and craftsmen who belonged to the era of King Kharavela of the Mahameghavahana dynasty. Apart from being a historical marvel, these caves also send the message of love, compassion and religious equality and tolerance which have been prevalent since the era of King Kharavela. Considered as one of the wonders of India, Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves clearly date back to the 1st century B.C.

Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves hold the reputation for being one of the oldest surviving monuments of the county. Built somewhere during the first and second century BC, these caves are a testament of the rich history and heritage of the then ruling Mahameghavahana dynasty. The caves are built in such a way that the face each other and offer an incredible view from the hill top. The Tatowa Gumpha of Khandagiri caves have the inscriptions of time engraved on them. One can also spot the use of natural colour pigments in these inscriptions used by the artisans during those times. These caves are here ever since the time of King Kharavela when they were exclusively carved to act as the residential quarters for the Jain monks. And the caves still hold religious importance for the followers of Jainism.
