About Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow

Luzhniki Stadium is not only the largest stadium in Russia but also one of the largest in all of Europe. The country’s national stadium which is located in Moscow is one giant arena for sports and entertainment, with a seating capacity of 81,000. The name ‘Luzhniki’ comes from the Russian word, roughly meaning ‘The Meadows.’ This is because of the location where the stadium was built back in 1956 – on the flood meadows of the Moskva River.

History

Although there is no club based at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, over the years it has catered to many big sporting events. It was the venue for the 1980 Olympic Games hosted by Russia and also multiple football league matches and finals. The latest of the Luzhniki Stadium events is the FIFA World Cup, 2018. It was the main venue and was packed to the maximum Luzhniki Stadium capacity.
