History of Times Square

Times Square history begins in the late 1800s; then the area used to be a commercial and residential one. The area was earlier known as Long Acre Square. Known for being a hub for illicit activities, the area was renamed in 1904 when the New York Times set up its offices here. Soon, the area became a place where all New Yorkers gathered and Times Square became famous for the celebration of the New Year’s Day. As the 20th century was beginning, this area saw a rise in many theatres. However, the great depression led to the closure of many theatres which were later converted to a motion picture theatre.

Once again, right before the resurgence of Times Square in the early 1990s, the area was laid down with criminal activities. However, with the beginning of the 90s era, the area was once more recognized as the heart of the city.

There is no specific reason why Times Square, New York is particularly special or beautiful. Many factors aid the attractiveness of the city. However, the biggest attraction of Times Square NYC comes with the dazzling lights atop and the magical street performances. Furthermore, the area is speckled with stores, shops,  and theatre as well as eating joints. Times Square is the perfect place for tourists and residents alike.

1. Earlier Time Square was named Longacre Square while it was named Times Square in the year 1904.
