About Sydney Tower in Sydney
The Sydney Tower is a prominent tourist location, as it is the tallest structure in the city and also happens to be the Southern hemisphere’s second tallest observation tower. The term Sydney Tower is also known by different names such as Sydney Tower Eye, AMP Tower, Westfield Centrepoint Tower, Centrepoint Tower or just Centrepoint all around the city. It also happens to be a member of the World Federation of Great Towers.
The tower stands above the Sydney central business district located at the Market system and stands at around 309 meters or 1014 feet. The additional advantage of being able to reach it from the Pitt Street Mall, Market Street or Castlereagh Street and that it sits above the Westfield Sydney shopping center makes it easily accessible to the traveler.
The history of the tower began with the unveiling of the first plans for Sydney Tower by Australian architect Donald Crone in March 1968. But the construction of the structure began in 1975. Before the Sydney tower came to existence the maximum permissible height limit in the city was 279 m, that is 915 feet, so as to allow the seamless movement of harbour's flying boats which were quite popular before the modern jet became common.
It was not until August 1981 that the tower was opened for public. The cost of construction amounted to A $36 million by the time the tower was complete. This tower is popular for its majestic structure and impressive architecture. People love to go and celebrate their happiest moments at the Sydney Tower. Another significant fact about the tower is that it was decorated with sculptures from Australian artist Dominique Sutton during the Sydney 2000 Olympics. These sculptures were positioned above the main body of the tower and in some cases on the edges. Sydney Tower is undoubtedly a sight to behold and a place to create memories.
