Culture in Sikkim

Immerse yourself in the diverse and colorful culture of Sikkim where the three major communities Lepchas, the Bhutias and the Nepalese coexist peacefully. Apart from these three major cultural groups, there are the Marwaris, the Tibetans, Muslims, the Biharis, Bengalis and a number of others.

Experience the ingrained magical charm of the Sikkimese culture while viewing the folk dances and songs of this region. This includes the Lu Khangthamo thanksgiving dance, the folk dance Gha To Kito, the Chi Rimu, the Gnungmala Gnunghey, the Rechungma and the Be Yu Mista.

Besides this, there are also popular mask dances that are a fun spectacle like the Enchey Chaam, the Kagyed Dance, the Rumtek Chaam and the Gouthor(Winter) Chaam. During these masked dances, the monks cover themselves with gaily painted masks, sparkling jewels and ceremonial swords and dance to the beats of the drums.

You can also view several different kinds of crafts in the towns and villages here like wood carvings, paintings, woolen crafts and carpet makings. The Sikkimese culture can also be seen in the vibrant fairs and festivals held throughout the year like the Saga Dawa, Phang Lhbsol, Bumchu, Losoong, Dasain and the Drupka Teshi festivals.
