Places to Visit in Bhubaneswar

Lingaraja Temple - One of the few ancient temples in the city of Bhubaneswar, Lingaraja Temple is highly revered and continues to be an important place of worship even during the present time. It was built in the 11th century CE by the ruler Yayati Keshari of Somvanshi dynasty. Lingaraja Temple is located at a distance of 5 km from Bhubaneswar Railway Station, and can be easily reached by an auto-rickshaw or an app-based cab. One of the most religious places to visit in Bhubaneswar, Lingaraja Temple is dedicated to Harihara who is considered as a combined avatar of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. The temple is built in the Kalinga style of architecture and comprises of vimana, bhoga-manadap, nata mandira and the jagamohana. The sanctum sanctorum, shiva linga is worshipped.

Dhauligiri Hills - A famous tourist place in Bhubaneswar, Dhauligiri Hills are located at a distance of 12 km from Bhubaneswar Railway station and 13.5 km from Biju Patnaik International Airport. It is not only a popular tourist spot in Bhubaneswar but also a revered historical site located on the banks of Daya river, the one which turned red with blood during the destructive Kalinga war. According to legends, King Ashoka transformed into a noble and kind-hearted ruler after seeing this. Dhauligiri Hills feature stupas, chaitya and pillars around it. Some of the noticeable spots to visit at Dhauligiri are Shanti Stupa and numerous Edicts.

Brahmeswara Temple - Another famous temple to visit in bhubaneswar is the Brahmeswara Temple which was built during the 9th century. The temple was built in honour of Lord Shiva, and continues to be an important place of worship among the local people. It is purely constructed in the typical Indian architectural style which features adorned door frames and symbolic inscriptions. Check out the intriguing carvings on the outer walls of the temple which shows geometrical shapes of hieratic deities and human beings.

Nandankanan Zoological Park - Located at a distance of 17 km from Bhubaneswar Railway station, Nandankanan Zoo is situated inside the Chandaka forest. One of the most interesting places to visit in Bhubaneswar, the Nandankanan Zoo is home to more than 67 species of animals and several varieties of plants. Some of the fun things which you can do here is take a joy ride in the toy train to observe the wildlife up close, a White tiger safari, and boating. Also, take a quick tour of the botanical garden located inside the premises of the zoo.

Odisha State Museum - Located just at a distance of 1.5 km from Bhubaneswar Railway Station, the Odisha State Museum is a famous place for sightseeing in Bhubaneswar. Established in the year 1938, the Odisha State Museum comprises of more than 10 galleries containing artifacts, manuscripts, weapons and armory, scientific tools, and much more. Other important objects that represent the rich heritage of Odisha also include bronze tools, paintings, and an extraordinary collection of palm-leaf manuscripts.
