About West Bengal Tourism

The Land of Unabashed Natural Beauty

When talking about the West Bengal tourism, we know that the state is famed all over for its natural beauty. Located in the Bay of Bengal, the state is bordered by Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal, and is highly acclaimed for its affinity for the arts and culture. If you are looking for a tryst with nature, or some time away simply contemplating the depth of life while watching an extraordinary sunset, or a decadent meal full of sinful sweets or spicy fries, then tourism in West Bengal is meant for you. What’s famous in West Bengal is not just the food or the art but the spirit of the people, the ubiquitous laid-back attitude of the people, the vibrant markets, the muggy humidity and the twisting turning alleyways. The best places in West Bengal make one feel welcome and completely at home.

This West Bengal travel guide intends to make you familiar with everything that the state proffers to the traveler, be it food, art, culture, festivals or the wonders of nature.

History of West Bengal

Being a prominent territory of India under the colonial rule, West Bengal got to witness division basi religion after the independence of the nation in 1947. As the western part of Bengal, which is dominated by the Hindus, became the West Bengal; the other Muslim dominated portion of the region became a part  of Pakistan. Later in 1971, post the fallout between the East Bengal and Pakistan, the latter portion became Bangladesh.

Culture of West Bengal

With strong inclination towards literature, music, art, and craft, the locals of West Bengal can be found quite welcoming and well-spoken. Inhabiting people of every religion, including Islam, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhism, Hindu is the most dominated one. Hence, here one can get to observe festivals of different religions. Home to many great scholars, poets, and film-makers, locals can be found speaking Bengali, Urdu, Nepali, and some other languages.

Attractions in West Bengal

Although there are many tourist destinations in the state, the gem of West Bengal tourism is Darjeeling, a serene, charming little hill station that invokes the poet in everybody. Beautiful sunrises to wake up to, foggy afternoons spent soaking up the sunrays, and chilly evenings to bundle up inside in. Just the name of Darjeeling conjures up images of the sun reflecting off of snow covered peaks, vibrant green hills and fragrant tea gardens, while the clouds roll in. Tiger Hill, perched atop a height of 2,590 m, is especially popular for offering mesmerizing sunrises, when the weather is clear.

Tourism in West Bengal is not limited to the hill station of Darjeeling, there are a hundred other destinations that are worth a visit such as Kolkata, The Sundarbans, Digha, Siliguri, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Kurseong among several others. There are several wildlife sanctuaries and national parks in the state, such as Sundarbans National Park, Jaldapara National Park, Chintamani Kar Bird Sanctuary, Gorumara National Park, Neora Valley National Park, Raiganj Wildlife Sanctuary and Singalila National Park, which are worth a visit for the unique flora and fauna found there. The coastal areas are ideal for a relaxing beach vacation, without the hustle bustle of the city.

As architecture is a major draw here, so are the shopping opportunities. If you are looking for silk or handloom saris then there can be no better place in this part of the country than West Bengal. Choose from a myriad of colors and make such as jamdani, kantha, tant, korial, gorad, baluchari, muslin and tussar.

Adventure in West Bengal

Encompassing some magnificent pinnacles that are perfect for trekking, here one can grab a chance to navigate through the deep and tapered valleys, while cherishing the alluring views of pristine waters and alpine forests. Hop on to Jayanti and Ayodhya hills to feel some adrenaline rush through rock climbing, or indulge in parasailing, water skiing, and activities like snorkelling. Tourists may also visit to Delta River, and choose to sail through the creeks, jungles and an ocean on a wooden cruise boat while savouring the enticing view of the backdrops of West Bengal.

Famous Food of West Bengal

Being a treasure trove of rich culture, here locals enjoy the art of cooking. With some flavourful cuisines at its credit, Bengalis are quite foodie. Mainly prepared with fish, rice and lentils, and sauteed with cumin, fenugreek leaves, and mustard seeds; here one can cherish famous food items, like: Sukto, Macher Jhol, Pitha and more. While, the famous sweets of Bengal are: Shondesh, Rasmalai, Roshogolla and more.

Festivals of West Bengal

The list of famous festivals of Bengal includes, the celebration of Durga Pooja, when the entire state is decked up like a bride. While, Vasant Panchami, Basanta Utsav, and Jamai Sasthi are some  of the important festivals observed here. With a wonderful heritage and tradition to take pride in, here many religious festivals are celebrated with passion.

Travel and tourism in West Bengal will take you to many different spots, each one more beautiful and fascinating than the first, so make sure that you have planned accordingly and have enough time to cover all the major destinations of the state.

    • Trip to Bali

quite mix off emotions initially it went superb and we enjoyed a lot, our driver come guide was helpful, but there was always a communication gap as he was not able to communicate properly in English. on the 3rd day we were supposed to go to candle light dinner in the night. we got free from day tour by approx 4 pm and then we suggested driver to drop us at hotel and let us get ready then we will go to Dinner. driver refused to do so stating the itinerary doesn't include back to hotel and then dinner. we reached the dinner place at 5 pm evening and we found dinner will start after 7 pm. this was disappointing as we wanted to have special event of candle light dinner, for which we could not get ready and unnecessarily wait for more than 2 hours. I said, i cannot wait this long and let us go back to hotel, driver thought i want to cancel the dinner and he informed restaurant that cancel the dinner, he took my sign on the note and cancel the dinner. eventually i came to know that my money went west as i wont be getting any compensation for this in term of any other service or monetory. Apart from this over all it was a good experience. felt much more can happen in given time period last but not the list, thank you travel triangle and wings of fly to give me a unforgettable honeymoon experience

    • Trip to Bhutan

Nice one trip. We are veg. Hotels in Bhutan less food variety. Less Spicy food. Only problem we feel. Else its best. AD tours nicely arrange trip. Tips 1) U can go from Alipurdurar railway station west bengal which is 60 km from Phunsheling. 2) Alipurdurar is 300km from Guwahati. 3) The drive and Road side view from Phunsheling to Thimpu are best. 4) All Indian currancy Rs.10 to Rs 2000 accepeted. 5) Shopping at Phunsheling is better in small market near immigration office.

    • Trip to Sikkim - Gangtok - Darjeeling

We had a very memorable trip through Sikkim and little bit of West Bengal. The hotels provided were satisfactory for us and dint have any issues. The drivers in Gangtok, Lachen and Lachung were very good, so were the cabs; but the condition of the cabs were not so great in Pelling, Kalimpong and Darjeeling. The driver in Kalimpong was the worst as he came in late and refused to cover all the sites in the itenary. On top of this, the driver asked us to pay the parking fees everywhere, even when it was already included in the package. I have been promised that it will be refunded, but I am yet to receive the same. The disappointment was that in spite of me reporting this to the tour operator they instead of being considerate and understanding to us, were actually defending the drivers and their deeds. One more thing i got to know very late was the fact that in Gangtok, they have restrictions for certain vehicles to not enter the main city between 8 am to 8 pm. This should have been informed well in advance to us. Also, dint have any support from the Travel Triangle persons in this regard. Overall i still feel we enjoyed the trip in spite of some of the difficulties we faced through out, all because the place itself is so mesmerizing.

    • Trip to Bhutan

I had a wonderful experience with sunshine travels. Although I had done booking a month back, but just before a couple of days it was informed that border gates will be closed owing to general elections happening in West Bengal. Still Lalit ensured to get necessary approvals so that we have a smooth entry in Bhutan. He was very supportive and available at all times. In fact there was some issue in arranging vehicle (wagon R) in bhutan so Lalit informed me from beforehand that he might have to book a bigger vehicle (creta) for which i will have to pay some marginal amount more and only if I confirm he will book it. Driver Namgay who was also a tour guide was phenomenal. He showed us around , guided us and even when we decided to include Punakha town in our trip besides earlier planned Thimphu and Paro, he was very accommodative. His pleasant personality and hospitality added to the charm during the trip. Honestly speaking, I had booked first time from travel triangle through a local agent ( all previous trips were through MMT , Thomas Cook etc) but this time my dates were not matching so I decided to do it through travel triangle and sunshine travels. I am really happy for this decision as it turned out to be a memorable trip. Hotels were good in Thimphu and Paro and Phuntshoeling hotel was decent considering the place. I will recommend sunshine travel to anyone travelling to Bhutan.

    • Trip to Europe

Overall it was an excellent tour of Vienna, Budapest and Prague. Some point of improvement for the agent or things which can be taken care by new travelers... 1. Searching for cab driver after landing at the Vienna airport was tough. 2.Rooms of Ramada encore in Vienna and IBIS in Budapest were very small. 3. There was no electric water heating machine ( used for tea/coffee) in IBIS-Budapest and Fortuna west-Prague, so it was little problem for us. 4. Fortune-West hotel in Prague was far away from the main city. 5.We should have been informed that exchange price in India is best as compared to European countries. Excellent response time, proactive and very professional. Special Appreciation to Agent- Daman, who designed my entire itinerary and made all the bookings

    FAQ's of West Bengal

Read on to find out why our customers love us!

West Bengal is a great place for foodies. Try to savor the fish preparations here, and the sweets.

You can club Sikkim and Orissa with your West Bengal trip.

It is very hot and humid in West Bengal during the summers and the monsoons, so make sure to carry light and airy clothes if visiting during this time. For the winter months, carry light woolens.

The ideal duration for a West Bengal tour depends on the destinations that the tourists wish to cover and the experiences they want to choose. A 4 nights, 5 day trip would ideally cover all major destinations in a hassle-free manner. However, if tourists wish to explore more offbeat destinations then a longer trip can be arranged. Consult the travel agents at Travel Triangle for more information regarding the same.

Tourists should try to visit West Bengal during the winter months, from November to February
