‘Kodiveri’ is derived from ‘Kodivari’, which indicates tigers in Tamil. This might be due to the dam’s existence in a forest area where so many tigers live. This historic dam is situated along State Highway 15, approximately 15 km from Gobichettipalayam towards Sathyamangalam in the state’s western region. The dam is constructed on the Bhavani River, and two troughs arise from the dams, Thadepalli on the southern side and Arrakkankottai on the northern side of the Bhavani River.

Thadepalli troughs irrigate the northern side of Gobichettipalayam, and paddy or sugarcane cultivation is prominent in this area. This historical dam irrigates approximately 24,504 acres of land on the north side. The Kodiveri Dam not only offers scenic and beautiful views or activities to its visitors, but it also supplies water for irrigation on over 25,000 hectares of land. At the base of Kodiveri Dam, there is a playful park for visitors’ enjoyment, which offers exciting attractions, thrilling rides, and games for tourists to enjoy and make beautiful memories.

The channel was mined at Kodiveri in 1125 AD by the Kongalvan Vettuva Gounder King, a chieftain under the rule of Chola King Kulottunga. The dam was constructed in the 17th century by the Maharaja of Mysore using prisoners and elephants.

A 20-foot rock wall was sculpted to build this dam. The iron bar interlocked the heavy stones, and lead was used as mortar. The small waterfall on the dam was built from the river’s floating water. On the other side of the dam, the scenic view is purely a pleasure to the eyes. However, this feature is not visible in all seasons except the dry season, when the river water levels drop too much.
