According to the legend, the king of Orchha, Madhukar Shah was a devout devotee of Lord Krishna while his wife, Queen Ganesh Kunwari was a devout devotee of Lord Rama. The couple used to have quarrels regarding their beliefs. It is believed that during one such disagreement, Madhukar Shah asked his wife to bring Ram to his court.

Queen Ganesh Kumari vowed to present Lord Ram to Orchha or drown herself in the river Saryu. It is believed that lord Rama did not show up so the Queen decided to drown herself. Seeing her devotion, Lord Ram appeared in Queen Ganesh Kunwari’s lap as an infant. He laid down three conditions which the queen readily accepted. Upon returning to Orchha, the first place that the queen went to was her palace, where Ram decided to reside as part of his condition.
