Dharamshala, Dalhousie and Khajjiar for families, in 4 nights and 5 days

This is a family circuit built around two of Himachal's gentlest hill towns and the meadow that gave India its own Mini Switzerland. You spend the first two nights in Dharamshala and McLeodganj, the seat of the Dalai Lama, then move across the Dhauladhar foothills to Dalhousie for two more, with a full day set aside for Khajjiar. The pace is deliberately easy. Short drives, low-altitude walks, and plenty of open green space mean kids do not get restless and older parents are not left breathless.

Khajjiar is the day everyone remembers. It is a saucer of grassland ringed by deodar forest at about 6,500 feet, and the tourism board itself calls it the Mini Switzerland of India. Horses graze, children roll down the slope, and there is a small lake in the middle. It sits a short drive from Dalhousie, so you see it without a long haul.

Every day on this itinerary can be reshaped. Add a night, change a hotel, or slow the sightseeing down for a trip with toddlers. This is the family-focused version of the wider Himachal range, and you can compare all our Himachal family packages here.

    Day-by-day itinerary (Day 1 to Day 5)

Day 1: Arrive in the Kangra valley and settle into Dharamshala

Your trip starts at your chosen base point. Most families arrive at Pathankot, the nearest railhead, and drive up in about two and a half hours, though many also come in through Chandigarh or fly directly into Kangra (Gaggal) Airport, which is roughly 15 km from Dharamshala. Our private AC cab meets you and brings you up to Hotel Manu Vinod in the Naddi and Satobari area of upper Dharamshala, close to Dal Lake. Check in, take a welcome drink, and keep the evening light. If you arrive early, it is worth a first look at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium, often called one of the most scenic cricket grounds in the world, with the Dhauladhar range rising straight behind the stands. Dinner is at the hotel.

Day 2: McLeodganj, the Dalai Lama Temple and the Naddi viewpoint

After breakfast you spend a full day around McLeodganj, the Tibetan quarter above Dharamshala. The heart of it is the Tsuglagkhang Complex, the Dalai Lama Temple, where you can walk the prayer-wheel circuit and visit the Tibet Museum and the Namgyal Monastery next door. From there the day is a string of short, family-friendly stops: the Bhagsunag Temple and the Bhagsu waterfall behind it, the stone Church of St John in the Wilderness, built in 1852 and set among tall cedars, and Dal Lake, a quiet green pond ringed by trees. Close the afternoon at the Naddi viewpoint for a wide sunset over the Dhauladhar peaks. Families with older children who want more can add a short leg of the Triund trek, one of the easiest high-ridge walks in the region. Return to the hotel for dinner.

Day 3: Cross the Dhauladhar to Dalhousie

Check out after breakfast for the drive to Dalhousie, about 120 km and close to four hours through changing valley scenery. Dalhousie was laid out by the British in 1854 as a summer retreat, and it keeps that quiet, colonial-era feel across its five low hills. Check in to Hotel Monal near the Mall and GPO, rest through the afternoon, then walk down to Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk in the evening. These twin market squares are where the town gathers, good for Chamba handicrafts, woollens and a slow family stroll. Dinner and overnight in Dalhousie.

Day 4: Khajjiar, the Mini Switzerland day

This is the big one. After breakfast you drive out toward Khajjiar, roughly 24 km from Dalhousie, stopping along the way at Panchpula, a set of streams and small waterfalls that also holds the memorial to freedom fighter Sardar Ajit Singh, and at Subhash Baoli, a spring-fed spot named for Subhash Chandra Bose. For a bigger view, the road climbs to Dainkund Peak, the highest point around Dalhousie at about 2,745 metres, with a short walk to the top. Then comes Khajjiar itself, the wide meadow and forest bowl that earns the Mini Switzerland name, where kids can run free, ride ponies or simply picnic by the lake. On the way you pass through the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, a deodar forest often good for spotting deer and birds. Families with time to spare can extend toward Chamera Lake, the reservoir behind Chamera Dam near Chamba, which offers gentle boating. Return to Dalhousie for dinner.

Day 5: A last Himachal morning, then homeward

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast and complete checkout. Your private cab then takes you back down to your departure point, usually Pathankot for a train or onward journey, or through to Chandigarh or Delhi if that suits your booking better. You leave with a phone full of Khajjiar photos and a family trip that never asked too much of anyone.

Is this trip right for your family?

Short answer: yes, and especially for mixed-age groups. The whole route stays between roughly 4,500 and 7,000 feet, so there is no serious altitude to worry about with young children or grandparents. The drives are short by hill standards, the walks are optional and gentle, and the two bases are calm towns rather than crowded resorts.

With young kids get open space at Khajjiar, pony rides, a lake, and the Bhagsu waterfall to splash near.

Older parents get an easy pace, no steep treks unless they choose one, plus the Dalai Lama Temple, the churches and the markets to explore slowly.

As a group, everyone eats together (breakfast and dinner are included daily) and travels in one private cab, so there is no juggling of buses or shared transfers.

The one caveat worth planning for: if you travel in deep winter, Dalhousie and Khajjiar can get snow and the odd road closure, which is magical for kids but needs a flexible morning or two. We build that flexibility in.

      FAQs About Himachal Tour Packages

What is the best time to visit Dharamshala, Dalhousie and Khajjiar with family?

March to June is the most popular window, with pleasant days and a green Khajjiar meadow that suits kids and elders. October and November bring crisp air and the year's sharpest mountain views with fewer crowds. If you want snow, December to February delivers it in Dalhousie and Khajjiar, though you should keep mornings flexible for road conditions.

How many days are enough, and why 4 nights and 5 days?

Four nights and five days is the sweet spot for this circuit. It gives you two unhurried nights in Dharamshala and McLeodganj and two in Dalhousie, with a full day for Khajjiar, without the long single-day drives that a shorter trip forces on you. Anything less means rushing the Dalai Lama Temple and the Khajjiar day; more nights simply add slower mornings or a Chamba extension.

How much does this package cost per person from Delhi?

It starts from Rs 15,500 per person on twin sharing for the budget tier and around Rs 17,222 for deluxe hotels, on a land-only basis . That covers your four nights of hotels, daily breakfast and dinner, and a private cab for every transfer and sightseeing leg. Your train or flight to the base point is separate, and children's rates are quoted on request.

Is Dharamshala and Dalhousie good for a family trip with kids and elderly parents?

It is one of the easier Himachal circuits for mixed ages. The whole route stays low, roughly 4,500 to 7,000 feet, so altitude is not a concern for young children or grandparents. Drives are short, the walks are optional, and Khajjiar's open meadow gives kids room to run while parents keep an easy pace. Meals and one private cab across the trip mean nobody juggles buses.

How do I reach Dharamshala and Dalhousie from Delhi or Chandigarh?

From Delhi it is about 485 km by road to Dharamshala, near 11 hours, usually as an overnight or early start. From Chandigarh it is a shorter drive of about 250 km, close to 7 hours. Many families instead take a train to Pathankot, the nearest railhead at roughly 85 km, then a two and a half hour drive up. Kangra (Gaggal) Airport is about 15 km from Dharamshala if you prefer to fly.

What is the best way to travel between Dharamshala and Dalhousie?

By private cab, which this package includes. The two towns are about 120 km apart, a scenic drive of close to four hours across the Dhauladhar foothills. There is no direct train and buses are slow with a change, so a private car keeps the day comfortable for a family and lets you stop for photos and breaks on the way.

Is Khajjiar really the Mini Switzerland of India?

The nickname is official; Himachal tourism itself markets Khajjiar as the Mini Switzerland of India. It is a wide grassland saucer at about 6,500 feet, ringed by dense deodar forest with a small lake at its centre and horses grazing across it. It is not a large town or a resort strip, so set expectations as a beautiful open meadow to spend a relaxed half-day, roughly 24 km from Dalhousie.

Can I customise this package or upgrade the hotels?

Yes, every part is flexible. You can upgrade from budget to deluxe or premium hotels, add nights in Dharamshala or Dalhousie, extend toward Chamba and Chamera Lake, add a Triund trek leg, or slow the sightseeing for a trip with toddlers. Tell your trip coordinator what you want and they rebuild the quote around it before you pay.

What is the cancellation and refund policy?

As a draft frame, cancellations more than 30 days before departure are fully refundable, 30 to 15 days carry a 50% refund, 15 to 7 days a 25% refund, and inside 7 days there is no refund. Date changes are usually free up to 15 days out, subject to availability. Your coordinator confirms the exact policy in writing at the time of booking.

What is included and what is not?

Included are 4 nights of hotels, daily breakfast and dinner, a private AC cab for all transfers and sightseeing, arrival and departure pickup, a welcome drink, and all parking, tolls, taxes and driver charges. Not included are your train or flight to the base point, lunches, monument and camera fees, adventure activities like paragliding, and personal expenses such as shopping and tips.

Will we see snow, and do we need any permits?

For snow, travel December to February, when Dalhousie and Khajjiar usually get fresh falls; the rest of the year the higher viewpoints may still hold patches. No special permit is needed by Indian travellers for this Dharamshala and Dalhousie route. Foreign nationals should carry their passport and check current local rules, and no Rohtang-style permit applies here since the itinerary stays in the Kangra and Chamba side of Himachal.

First day of the journey when we Departed from Chandigarh tu mcleodganj however over cab driver was an aware that where are we going to he had to ask me about our trip plan as he was not informed about our plan. when we reached to mcleodganj the hotel was very nice however the manager of the hotel a
sked me several times to pay him however he was supposed to get payment from our travel agent this thing really bothered me as I was travelling with my family. the next day we started over trip from mcleodganj to Dalhousie and our hotel was in banikhet which is almost 5 kilometres before Dalhousie. I was provided two rooms in the hotel named greenview, as per the trip plan but the hotel was under construction and there was not any single room furnished however I was given another room in the nearby hotel Grand Dalhousie. the rooms that were provided to us were good but the bad thing was that that just below the room there was a big Nala from there lot of foul smell was continuously coming to our rooms. And the worst thing of the trip planning was that the driver from second day onwards asked me for payment directly to him. He was supposed to start his journey from the early in the morning however on the third day he stated that without getting payment he won't go to khajjiar and forced me to talk to his boss and to travel agent and other superiors to settle this matter. All this all this poor management of the trip planner who you didn't pay to the driver wasted my valuable moments of the short period trip to Himachal. I was acting as an agent between driver his Bose travelling agent and the travel triangle. only for this purpose I didn't book directly on my own so that I can escape from all this management so I didn't knew that why did I book my holiday trip from travel triangle when I have to do all these messy things. And where are those welcome drinks is the trip plan you have provided me. And just I am just to say that there are very less chances that you will get what is written in your trip plan so better book on your own but for that at you should pre plan your holiday trip. The local peoples of Himachal Pradesh are very helpful. The most memorable moment of my trip is to be at khajjiar and enjoying the sunny and slightly cold weather.
