Manali sits at the head of the Kullu valley in Himachal Pradesh, with the Beas river running beside the road and deodar forest climbing the slopes on either side. For a couple leaving Chennai, the pull is the sheer swing of it. You board a flight in coastal heat and, a drive later, you are walking snow at over 3,000 metres. How to reach Manali from Chennai

There is no direct flight and no direct train from Chennai to Manali, and Manali itself has no commercial airport. The nearest airstrip is Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali, code KUU), about 50 km short of town, but it takes only small aircraft on limited routes. So almost every couple does it in two legs: a flight from Chennai to Delhi, then the mountain drive that this package handles for you.

The most common route is Chennai (MAA) to Delhi (DEL), a nonstop of roughly 2 hours 45 minutes, then Delhi to Manali by Volvo or private car, around 530 km taken overnight in about 12 to 14 hours. A shorter mountain leg is to fly Chennai to Chandigarh instead, then drive the 310 km up to Manali in about 8 to 9 hours. Trains work only as far as the plains: Chennai to Delhi runs close to two days, and the nearest usable railheads are Chandigarh or the narrow-gauge line at Joginder Nagar, about 160 km from Manali. Your 5-day, 4-night itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Delhi and drive to Manali

Our representative meets you at Delhi airport or the railway station and you set off north for Manali. It is a long but scenic run, and the driver breaks it at Sundernagar Lake, the Pandoh Dam on the Beas, and the small Mini Vaishno Devi temple carved into the hillside. You reach Manali by evening, check into the hotel, and settle in over dinner. Travel light for the road and keep a warm layer in your day bag, the temperature drops sharply once you climb past Mandi.

Day 2: Manali local sightseeing

After breakfast you take a half-day loop around town. First stop is the Hadimba Devi temple, a four-storey cedar shrine standing in a quiet deodar grove, then the village of Vashisht with its natural hot-water springs and stone temple. You also take in the Tibetan monastery, Van Vihar by the river, and the Mall Road and Manu Market for browsing and coffee. The afternoon is deliberately loose, most couples spend it wandering Old Manali's cafes across the river before heading back for dinner and the night at the hotel.

Day 3: Solang Valley or Rohtang Pass

This is the big mountain day. After breakfast you drive up the valley to Solang, the adventure meadow where you can try paragliding, the ropeway or a zorb ride, all at your own cost. If the road is open you continue to Rohtang Pass, at 3,978 metres a genuine high pass linking Manali to Lahaul and Spiti, with snow on the ground for much of the year. The approach runs past the mouth of the Atal Tunnel, worth a photo stop. Rohtang needs a permit and a separate entry charge, which is why it sits in the exclusions, and in deep winter the pass can be shut, in which case Solang and the tunnel area stand in. You return to the hotel for dinner and the night.

Day 4: Kullu and Naggar day trip

Today you head down the valley to Kullu and Naggar. You can raft a stretch of the Beas, stop at a shawl and handloom factory, and then spend time at Naggar Castle, a 15th-century stone-and-timber fort that now holds an art gallery and looks straight across the valley. Nearby are the Gauri Shankar and Jagatsukh temples, fine examples of old hill-stone carving. It is an easy, unhurried day before you head back to the hotel to rest.

Day 5: Departure

After breakfast you check out and drive back down to Delhi for your onward flight or train to Chennai. Keep the return flight for the evening or the next morning if you can, the mountain leg is long and you do not want to rush it. You leave with a phone full of photos and a trip that started at sea level and ended in the snow.
