Getting to Shimla and Manali from Mumbai

There is no practical direct train or road route from Mumbai, so the trip north is a flight. You have two sensible ways in.

Fly Mumbai to Chandigarh (BOM to IXC). This is the shortest hop. A non-stop flight runs a little over two hours, and Chandigarh is the closest airport to Shimla, about 113 km and three and a half to four hours by road up to the hotel. Some dates route via Delhi, so confirm a non-stop for your travel days.

Fly Mumbai to Delhi, then drive. Delhi has the most flights out of Mumbai. From there it is an overnight Volvo or private cab: roughly 350 km to Shimla (eight to nine hours) or 530 km to Manali (twelve to fourteen hours). Most couples fly into Chandigarh on the way up and out of Chandigarh or Delhi on the way home.

The romantic add-on: the Kalka to Shimla toy train. If you can spare half a day, break the journey at Kalka and ride the narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla railway, a UNESCO World Heritage line that climbs about 96 km through around 100 tunnels to Shimla. Your 6-day Shimla and Manali honeymoon, day by day

Day 1: Arrive in Shimla

You land at Chandigarh, where our representative meets you, and drive up to your Shimla-area hotel (around 113 km, three to four hours through the pine slopes). Check in, take it easy as you adjust to the altitude, and keep the evening free to walk the neighbourhood or sit out with the valley view. An early night sets you up for the sightseeing day.

Day 2: Shimla sightseeing

After breakfast you head out to see Shimla properly. The day takes in the Himachal State Museum, the shops and cafes along Mall Road, and the open promenade of The Ridge, with Christ Church, the second-oldest church in north India, standing over it, before the walk up to Jakhoo Temple. Most couples also drive the 16 km out to Kufri for the meadow views and a short pony ride, a classic Shimla honeymoon stop. Back to the hotel by evening.

Day 3: Shimla to Manali

Check out after breakfast for the drive to Manali, roughly 250 km and seven to eight hours via Naldehra and the Kullu valley, with the Beas river alongside for the final stretch. Check into your Manali hotel and take the evening slow after a long road day.

Day 4: Manali sightseeing

A full day around Manali. You visit the Hidimba Devi Temple, the cedar-wood shrine set in the deodar forest, the hot springs and old stone temple at Vashisht, and Manu Temple in Old Manali, believed to be the only temple dedicated to the sage Manu. The rest of the day is yours for Old Manali's cafes or Mall Road. Back to the hotel for the night.

Day 5: Solang, Rohtang and Atal Tunnel

Today you pick your kind of mountain day. Option one is Solang Valley for paragliding, the ropeway and zorbing. Option two is the drive up towards Rohtang Pass, via Kothi and Rahalla Falls, for snow, subject to the pass being open and permits. Either way you can add the Atal Tunnel, the 9 km engineering landmark that runs under the Rohtang range to Sissu in Lahaul, an easy and very photogenic half-day. The evening is for Mall Road shopping before you head back to the hotel.

Day 6: Departure to Mumbai

After breakfast you check out and transfer to Chandigarh or Delhi airport for your flight home. The trip ends here, with the candlelight dinner and the snow already turning into the story you tell back home.
