About Tranquebar

Tranquebar is a beautiful and serene region with pristine surroundings. Tranquebar is situated close to Chennai and is easily accessible from there. There are innumerous
churches in the region and Christian pilgrims visit this place for the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church. Tranquebar was a well known Danish settlement in the
18th century and the town was taken over by the British in the 19th century. Danish Fort is one of the chief attractions in this region. The fort is highly
magnificent and was built in 1620. The forst has been reconstructed and renovated many times but it still retains the charm of bygone era. Tranquebar is
mentioned in the early scriptures as Sadanganpade.
Regular buses ply to and from Tranquebar to major cities in Karnataka. Trains are also available to the towns of Chidambaram and Nagapattinam.
Danish fort is one of the chief attractions in this town and the fort has now been converted to a museum. Fort Dansborg was the residence and headquarters of the Governor and other officials for 150 years. The rampart wall comprises of four sides with bastions.
The rooms in the southernside retain their originality but the rooms on the western and northern side have been damaged. On the eastern side of the fort is a two storeyed building facing the sea. It was the chief building of the fort.
Other main attraction is the Danish Governor's bungalow which was once a beautiful colonial bungalow.
There is the Pandiyan Masilamani Nathar temple built in the 13th century which is situated near to the sea. There are a few churches built in the 17th century and are located on King's street. The New Jerusalem Church and the Church of Zion are an interesting place to visit.
