Tangtse, located between the Nubra and Pangong regions, played a significant role in two major conflicts between Ladakh and Tibet. In the Tibet-Ladakh-Mughal War (1679-1684), Tibetan forces invaded Ladakh through this area. The Ladakhis initially repelled them at Long Kongma, but a larger Tibetan force defeated the Ladakhis near Chang La pass the following year. This led to a three-year siege at Basgo Fort, ending with Mughal intervention. The Dogra-Tibetan War (1841-1842) saw Tibetan forces supporting Ladakhi rebels against Dogra rule camp in the Tangtse-Durbuk valley. They established a defence post at Long Yogma. The Ladakhi rebels declared independence and sought Chinese support.
Dogra reinforcements arrived and engaged the Tibetans in skirmishes around Tangtse and Long Yogma. After initial losses, the Dogras used a flooding tactic suggested by a Nubra chieftain to dislodge the Tibetans, leading to victory. Both wars resulted in treaties: the Treaty of Tingmosgang (1684) redefined borders, with Ladakh losing control of Rudok and Guge, while the Treaty of Chushul (1842) restored the previous status quo and reestablished trade and diplomatic relations. These events highlight Tangtse’s strategic importance in Ladakh’s historical conflicts and border negotiations with Tibet.
