Khaba Fort is the cursed settlement of Paliwal Brahmins, who abandoned it 200 years ago for unclear reasons. The collapsing construction of the fort still contains the remnants of the residences of around 80 families who used to live here. Khaba Fort, which dates back to the 13th century AD, was originally an important portion of Kuldhara, a Paliwal Brahmin-inhabited settlement. Khaba Fort was once known as Sarai Fort (a border fort). The traders who reached Rajasthan along the Silk Route remained within this fort for the night. Only after paying taxes were they granted authorization to trade. The village’s remnants appear to be a well-planned community, with a temple surrounded by many homes. Interestingly, none of the dwellings in the remains have roofs. Khaba Fort has an abandoned atmosphere, with virtually little human activity in the region.

Khaba Fort Jaisalmer was constructed in the 14th century by the Paliwal Brahmins, who were noted for their riches and success. The fort’s defensive construction kept invaders out. The Paliwals were famed for their self-sufficient existence, and the fort was likewise intended to be self-sufficient. The fort was designed with a complicated water management system, allowing the Paliwals to store and save water for extended periods of time. The fort was abandoned in the nineteenth century owing to a severe drought, yet it still exists today as a tribute to the Paliwal Brahmins’ resourcefulness and endurance.
Restoration work is now underway at the fort. There is a tiny museum with old artefacts. The view of the green field from the top of the fort is stunning. It makes for excellent picture possibilities. The abundance of peacocks wandering about the Fort adds to its charm. Witness hundreds of peacocks and peahens exploring the grounds in search of daily grains and have an unforgettable morning.

Although small, one can easily conceive the strategic importance that Khaba Fort must have had in the past. As, it is located atop a small hill and gives an excellent panoramic view of the surroundings. On a clear day (mostly in the Thar Desert), you can see far and wide from here, across other hills and meadows. And if visiting towards the evening, you can get an excellent view of the sunset from across here. Overall, it forms for a lovely spot to click some wonderful pictures.Also, one can go down the fort and explore the ruins of the village of Kuldhara as far and wide as one desires. Try visiting towards the morning or the evening so that the sun is not very harsh. You can explore as much as you want since you will mostly face the direct sun. - You can combine a visit to the Khaba Fort, Jaisalmer on a day trip along with Kuldhara, Bada Bagh, Amar Sagar Jain Temple etc.
- Also, it can be visited while on the way to the Thar Desert, particularly if one is going towards the Sam Sand dunes.
- Plan a visit early in the morning or in the later half of the day when the sun starts getting milder.
- The best time of the year to visit here is between November to February when the heat is moderate and bearable.
- Hire a taxi or a self-drive vehicle to reach here.
- Carry water and basic snacks with you. There are no shops in the vicinity of the fort.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes that will help you explore the ruins, climb the flight of stairs and walk around without exhausting your legs.
- Don’t forget your sunglasses. And a hat will be a good thing to protect you from the heat.

The drive from Jaisalmer city to Khaba Fort is a pleasant one with wide highway that run amidst the Thar Desert. One can either rent a vehicle from Jaisalmer to reach Khaba fort, or hire a taxi along with a driver (who most often act as the guide). The fort is located atop a small hill. The last few kilometers of the drive span through the winding roads uphill to reach the fort’s main entrance. We did the later on our visit here. We had hired a taxi for the entire day from Jaisalmer city. Using this taxi, we visited first Khaba Fort, followed by Kuldhara, Bada Bagh and other attractions. The driver of the taxi also acted as a guide for us on the way.
